Job 31
1 J’ai fait un pacte avec mes yeux pour ne pas penser même à une vierge.
I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
2 Car quelle union Dieu aurait-il d’en haut avec moi? et quelle part le Tout-Puissant me donnerait-il à son céleste héritage?
For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 Ne perdra-t-il pas le méchant, et ne rejettera-t-il pas ceux qui commettent l’injustice?
Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
4 Ne considère-t-il pas mes voies, et ne compte-t-il pas toutes mes démarches?
Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
5 Si j’ai marché dans la vanité, et si mon pied s’est empressé vers la fraude,
If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
6 que Dieu pèse mes actions dans une juste balance, et qu’il connaisse ma simplicité.
Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity.
7 Si mes pas se sont détournés de la voie, si mon cœur a suivi mes yeux, et si la souillure s’est attachée à mes mains,
If my step hath turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to my hands;
8 que je sème, et qu’un autre mange, et que ma race soit arrachée.
Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
9 Si mon cœur a été séduit au sujet d’une femme, et si j’ai dressé des embûches à la porte de mon ami,
If my heart hath been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;
10 que ma femme soit déshonorée par un autre, et qu’elle soit exposée à une honteuse prostitution.
Then let my wife grind to another, and let others bow down upon her.
11 Car c’est là un crime énorme et une très grande iniquité.
For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
12 C’est un feu qui dévore jusqu’à une perte entière, et qui déracine les moindres rejetons.
For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all my increase.
13 (Si j’ai dédaigné d’entrer en jugement avec mon serviteur et avec ma servante, lorsqu’ils disputaient contre moi;
If I despised the cause of my male or female servant, when they contended with me;
14 car que ferai-je, quand Dieu s’élèvera pour juger, et lorsqu’il fera son enquête, que répondrai-je?)
What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
15 Ce qui m’a créé dans le sein de ma mère ne l’a-t-il pas créé aussi? Et n’est-ce pas le même Dieu qui nous a formés?
Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
16 Si j’ai refusé aux pauvres ce qu’ils voulaient, et si j’ai fait attendre les yeux de la veuve;
If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
17 si j’ai mangé seul mon pain, et si l’orphelin n’en a pas mangé:
Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten of it;
(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb; )
19 si j’ai négligé ce qui périssait faute de vêtement, et le pauvre dépourvu de manteau;
If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
20 si ses membres ne m’ont pas béni, et s’il n’a pas été réchauffé par les toisons de mes brebis;
If his loins have not blessed me, and if he hath not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 si j’ai levé la main sur l’orphelin, alors même que je me voyais le plus fort à la porte,
If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
22 que mon épaule tombe de sa jointure, et que mon bras se brise avec ses os.
Then let my arm fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from the bone.
23 Car j’ai toujours craint Dieu comme des flots bouillonnant contre moi, et je n’en ai pu supporter le poids.
For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
24 Si j’ai cru que l’or était ma force, et si j’ai dit à l’or pur: Tu es ma confiance;
If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
25 si j’ai mis ma joie dans mes richesses nombreuses, et dans les grands biens amassés par ma main;
If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much;
26 si j’ai regardé le soleil dans son éclat, et la lune dans sa marche brillante;
If I have beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
27 si alors mon cœur a ressenti une secrète joie, et si j’ai porté ma main à ma bouche pour la baiser,
And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
28 ce qui est le comble de l’iniquité, et un reniement du Dieu très haut;
This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
29 si je me suis réjoui de la ruine de celui qui me haïssait, si j’ai été ravi de ce que le malheur l’ait atteint;
If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or have lifted up myself when evil found him:
30 car je n’ai pas abandonné ma langue au péché, pour faire des imprécations contre lui;
Neither have I allowed my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 si les gens de ma maison n’ont pas dit: Qui nous donnera de sa chair, afin que nous en soyons rassasiés?
If the men of my tent have not said, O that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
32 L’étranger n’est pas demeuré dehors, ma porte a été ouverte au voyageur.
The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
33 Si j’ai tenu mon péché secret, comme font les hommes, et si j’ai caché mon iniquité dans mon sein;
If I have covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom:
34 si la grande multitude m’a épouvanté, ou si le mépris de mes proches m’a effrayé; si je ne suis pas au contraire demeuré dans le silence, sans franchir ma porte.
Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
35 Qui me donnera quelqu’un qui m’écoute, que le Tout-Puissant entende mon désir, et que le juge écrive lui-même son livre,
O that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.
36 afin que je le porte sur mon épaule, et que je m’en ceigne comme d’une couronne?
Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
37 A chacun de mes pas j’en prononcerai les paroles, et je le présenterai comme à mon prince.
I would declare to him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near to him.
38 Si ma terre crie contre moi, et qu’avec elle ses sillons pleurent;
If my land crieth against me, or its furrows likewise complain;
39 si j’en ai mangé les fruits sans les payer, et si j’ai affligé le cœur de ceux qui l’ont cultivée;
If I have eaten the fruits of it without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life:
40 qu’au lieu de froment naissent pour moi des ronces, et des épines au lieu d’orge.
Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
