Galates 3

1 Ô Galates insensés, qui vous a fascinés, pour ne pas obéir à la vérité, vous aux yeux de qui a été dépeint Jésus-Christ crucifié au milieu de vous?

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

2 Je veux seulement savoir de vous ceci: Est-ce par les œuvres de la loi que vous avez reçu l’Esprit, ou par l’audition de la foi?

This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

3 Êtes-vous si insensés, qu’ayant commencé par l’esprit, vous finissez maintenant par la chair?

Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

4 Est-ce en vain que vous avez tant souffert? Si cependant c’est en vain.

Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if [it be] yet in vain.

5 Celui donc qui vous communique l’Esprit et qui opère parmi vous des miracles, le fait-il par les œuvres de la loi ou par l’audition de la foi?

He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, [doeth he it] by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

6 Ainsi qu’il est écrit: Abraham crut à Dieu, et ce lui fut imputé à justice.

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

7 Reconnaissez donc que ceux qui s’appuient sur la foi, ceux-là sont les enfants d’Abraham.

Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

8 L’Ecriture prévoyant que c’est par la foi que Dieu justifierait les nations, l’annonça d’avance à Abraham: Toutes les nations seront bénies en toi.

And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, [saying], In thee shall all nations be blessed.

9 Ceux donc qui s’appuient sur la foi seront bénis avec le fidèle Abraham.

So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

10 Et tous ceux qui s’appuient sur les œuvres de la loi sont sous la malédiction. Car il est écrit: Maudit quiconque ne persévérera point dans tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi pour l’accomplir!

For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

11 Cependant, que nul n’est justifié devant Dieu par la loi, cela est manifeste, puisque le juste vit de la foi.

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, [it is] evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

12 Or la loi ne s’appuie pas sur la foi, puisque au contraire: Celui qui observera ces préceptes, vivra par eux.

And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

13 Le Christ nous a rachetés de la malédiction de la loi, devenu malédiction pour nous, selon qu’il est écrit: Maudit quiconque est pendu au bois!

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that hangeth on a tree:

14 Afin que la bénédiction donnée à Abraham fut communiquée aux gentils par le Christ Jésus, pour que nous reçussions par la foi la promesse de l’Esprit.

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

15 Mes frères (je parle à la manière des hommes), quand le testament d’un homme est ratifié, personne ne le rejette, ou n’y ajoute.

Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though [it be] but a man’s covenant, yet [if it be] confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.

16 Or les promesses ont été faites à Abraham et à celui qui naîtrait de lui. Il ne dit pas: À ceux qui naîtront, comme parlant de plusieurs, mais comme d’un seul: Et à celui qui naîtra de toi, c’est-à-dire au Christ.

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

17 Voici donc ce que je dis: Dieu ayant ratifié une alliance, la loi qui a été faite quatre cent trente ans après, ne la rend pas nulle au point de détruire la promesse.

And this I say, [that] the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

18 Car si c’est par la loi qu’il y a héritage, dès lors ce n’est pas en vertu de la promesse. Cependant c’est par la promesse que Dieu l’a donné à Abraham.

For if the inheritance [be] of the law, [it is] no more of promise: but God gave [it] to Abraham by promise.

19 Pourquoi donc la loi? Elle a été établie à cause des transgressions, jusqu’à ce que vînt le rejeton pour lequel Dieu avait fait la promesse; et remise par des anges dans la main d’un médiateur.

Wherefore then [serveth] the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; [and it was] ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

20 Or le médiateur n’est pas pour un seul, et Dieu est un seul.

Now a mediator is not [a mediator] of one, but God is one.

21 La loi est donc contraire aux promesses de Dieu? Nullement. Car si une loi eût été donnée qui pût vivifier, la justice viendrait vraiment de la loi.

[Is] the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

22 Mais l’Ecriture a tout renfermé sous le péché, afin que la promesse fût accomplie par la foi en Jésus-Christ, en faveur des croyants;

But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

23 Et avant que la foi vînt, nous étions sous la garde de la loi, réservés pour cette foi qui devait être révélée.

But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

24 Ainsi la loi a été notre pédagogue dans le Christ pour que nous fussions justifiés par la foi.

Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

25 Mais la foi étant venue, nous ne sommes plus sous le pédagogue.

But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

26 Car vous êtes tous enfants de Dieu par la foi qui est dans le Christ Jésus.

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

27 Car vous tous qui avez été baptisés dans le Christ, vous avez été revêtus du Christ;

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 Il n’y a plus ni Juif, ni Grec; plus d’esclave, ni de libre; plus d’homme, ni de femme. Car vous n’êtes tous qu’une seule chose dans le Christ Jésus.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 Et si vous êtes tous au Christ, vous êtes donc la postérité d’Abraham, héritiers selon la promesse.

And if ye [be] Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
