Actes 18

1 Après cela, Paul étant parti d’Athènes, vint à Corinthe;

After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;

2 Et ayant trouvé un certain Juif, du nom d’Aquila, originaire du Pont, qui était depuis peu venu d’Italie avec Priscille, sa femme (parce que Claude avait ordonné à tous les Juifs de sortir de Rome), il se joignit à eux.

And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome: ) and came unto them.

3 Et comme il était du même métier, il demeurait chez eux et y travaillait: or leur métier était de faire des tentes.

And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.

4 Mais il disputait dans les synagogues tous les jours de sabbat, interposant le nom du Seigneur Jésus, et il s’efforçait de persuader les Juifs et les Grecs.

And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.

5 Et lorsque Silas et Timothée furent venus de Macédoine, Paul s’appliquait à prêcher avec plus d’ardeur encore, annonçant hautement aux Juifs le Christ Jésus.

And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews [that] Jesus [was] Christ.

6 Mais les Juifs le contredisant et blasphémant, il secoua ses vêtements et leur dit: Que votre sang soit sur votre tête, j’en suis pur; et désormais j’irai vers les gentils.

And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook [his] raiment, and said unto them, Your blood [be] upon your own heads; I [am] clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

7 En sortant de là, il entra dans la maison d’un homme nommé Tite Juste, qui servait Dieu, et dont la maison était attenante à la synagogue.

And he departed thence, and entered into a certain [man’s] house, named Justus, [one] that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.

8 Cependant Crispe, chef de la synagogue, crut au Seigneur avec toute sa famille. Beaucoup de Corinthiens, ayant entendu Paul, crurent aussi et furent baptisés.

And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.

9 Or le Seigneur dit à Paul la nuit, dans une vision: Ne crains point, mais parle, et ne te tais pas;

Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:

10 Car je suis avec toi, et personne n’ira à ton encontre, pour te nuire, parce que j’ai un peuple nombreux dans cette ville.

For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.

11 Il demeura donc à Corinthe un an et six mois, enseignant chez eux la parole de Dieu.

And he continued [there] a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

12 Mais Gallion étant proconsul d’Achaïe, les Juifs, d’un commun accord, s’élevèrent contre Paul, et le conduisirent à son tribunal,

And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat,

13 Disant: Celui-ci persuade aux hommes de rendre à Dieu un culte contraire à la loi.

Saying, This [fellow] persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.

14 Et au moment où Paul commençait à ouvrir la bouche, Gallion dit aux Juifs: S’il s’agissait, ô Juifs, de quelque injustice ou de quelque crime, je vous écouterais, comme c’est mon devoir.

And when Paul was now about to open [his] mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O [ye] Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:

15 Mais si ce ne sont que des questions de mots, de noms et de votre loi, voyez vous-mêmes; je ne veux pas, moi, être juge de ces choses.

But if it be a question of words and names, and [of] your law, look ye [to it]; for I will be no judge of such [matters].

16 Et il les renvoya de son tribunal.

And he drave them from the judgment seat.

17 Et tous, s’emparant de Sosthène, chef de la synagogue, le frappaient devant le tribunal, et Gallion ne s’en mit nullement en peine.

Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat [him] before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.

18 Après qu’il eut demeuré un certain nombre de jours encore, Paul dit adieu aux frères, et fit voile pour la Syrie (et avec lui Priscille et Aquila), s’étant fait auparavant couper les cheveux à Cenchrée; car il avait fait un vœu.

And Paul [after this] tarried [there] yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn [his] head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.

19 Et il vint à Ephèse, où il laissa Priscille et Aquila. Mais lui, étant entré dans la synagogue, il disputait avec les Juifs.

And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.

20 Et ceux-ci le priant de rester plus longtemps avec eux, il n’y consentit point.

When they desired [him] to tarry longer time with them, he consented not;

21 Mais ayant pris congé d’eux, et leur ayant dit: Je reviendrai vers vous, si Dieu le veut, il partit d’Ephèse,

But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.

22 Et étant descendu à Césarée, il monta et salua l’Eglise; puis il descendit à Antioche.

And when he had landed at Cæsarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch.

23 Et après y avoir passé quelque temps, il partit, parcourant par ordre tout le pays de Galatie et la Phrygie, et fortifiant tous les disciples.

And after he had spent some time [there], he departed, and went over [all] the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.

24 Or un Juif, du nom d’Apollo, Alexandrin d’origine, homme éloquent et puissant dans les Ecritures, vint à Ephèse.

And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, [and] mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus.

25 Il avait été instruit de la voie du Seigneur, et, fervent d’esprit, il parlait et enseignait avec soin ce qui regarde Jésus, mais ne connaissant que le baptême de Jean.

This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

26 Il commença donc à parler avec assurance dans la synagogue. Lorsque Priscille et Aquila l’eurent entendu, ils le prirent chez eux, et lui exposèrent avec plus de soin la voie du Seigneur.

And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto [them], and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

27 Et comme il voulait aller en Achaïe, les frères qui l’y avaient exhorté, écrivirent aux disciples de le recevoir. Lorsqu’il fut arrivé, il servit beaucoup à ceux qui avaient embrassé la foi.

And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:

28 Car il convainquait fortement les Juifs, montrant par les écritures que Jésus est le Christ.

For he mightily convinced the Jews, [and that] publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
