Actes 16
1 Paul arriva à Derbe, puis à Lystre. Et voilà qu’il s’y trouvait un disciple du nom de Timothée, fils d’une femme juive fidèle et d’un père gentil.
Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father [was] a Greek:
2 Les frères, qui étaient à Lystre et à Icone, rendaient de lui un bon témoignage.
Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
3 Paul voulut l’emmener avec lui; il le prit donc et le circoncit à cause des Juifs qui étaient en ces lieux. Car tous savaient que son père était gentil.
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
4 Or, en allant par les villes, ils leur recommandaient d’observer les décisions qui avaient été prises par les apôtres et les anciens qui étaient à Jérusalem.
And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.
5 Ainsi les Eglises s’affermissaient dans la foi et croissaient en nombre tous les jours.
And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.
6 Mais, comme ils traversaient la Phrygie et le pays de Galatie, il leur fut défendu par l’Esprit-Saint d’annoncer la parole de Dieu dans l’Asie.
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
7 Etant venus en Mysie, ils tentèrent d’aller en Bithynie; mais l’Esprit de Jésus, ne le leur permit pas.
After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
8 Lorsqu’ils eurent traversé la Mysie, ils descendirent à Troas;
And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.
9 Et Paul eut, la nuit, une vision: Un certain homme de Macédoine se tenait devant lui, le priant et disant: Passe en Macédoine, et secours-nous.
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.
10 Aussitôt qu’il eut en cette vision, nous cherchâmes à partir pour la Macédoine, assurés que Dieu nous appelait à y prêcher l’Evangile.
And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.
11 Nous étant donc embarqués à Troas, nous vînmes droit à Samothrace, et le jour suivant à Néapolis,
Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next [day] to Neapolis;
12 Et de là à Philippes, colonie qui est la première ville de cette partie de la Macédoine. Or nous demeurâmes quelques jours à conférer dans cette ville.
And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, [and] a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days.
13 Le jour du sabbat, nous sortîmes hors de la porte près du fleuve, où il paraissait que se faisait la prière; et, nous asseyant, nous parlâmes aux femmes qui s’étaient assemblées.
And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted [thither.]
14 Et une femme, nommée Lydie, marchande de pourpre de la ville de Thyatire, et servant Dieu, nous écouta; et le Seigneur ouvrit son cœur pour prêter attention à ce que disait Paul.
And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard [us]: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
15 Lorsqu’elle eut été baptisée, elle et sa maison, elle nous pria, disant: Si vous m’avez jugée fidèle au Seigneur, entrez dans ma maison, et demeurez-y. Et elle nous y força.
And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought [us], saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide [there]. And she constrained us.
16 Or il arriva qu’allant à la prière, nous rencontrâmes une jeune fille ayant un esprit de python, laquelle apportait un grand gain à ses maîtres, en devinant.
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 Cette jeune fille nous suivant, Paul et nous, criait, disant: Ces hommes sont des serviteurs du Dieu Très-Haut, qui vous annoncent la voie du salut.
The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 Elle fit cela pendant bien des jours. Cependant Paul, le souffrant avec peine, et se retournant, dit à l’esprit: Je te commande, au nom de Jésus-Christ, de sortir d’elle. Et il sortit à l’heure même.
And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
19 Mais ses maîtres, voyant que l’espoir de leur gain était perdu, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, et les conduisirent sur la place publique devant les autorités;
And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew [them] into the marketplace unto the rulers,
20 Et les présentant aux magistrats, ils dirent: Ces hommes troublent notre ville, attendu que ce sont des Juifs,
And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
21 Qui enseignent des pratiques qu’il ne nous est pas permis de recevoir ni de suivre, puisque nous sommes Romains.
And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.
22 Et le peuple courut sur eux; et les magistrats, leurs vêtements déchirés, ordonnèrent qu’ils fussent déchirés de verges.
And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat [them].
23 Et, quand on les eut chargés d’un grand nombre de coups, ils les envoyèrent en prison, ordonnant au geôlier de les garder soigneusement.
And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast [them] into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
24 Le geôlier, ayant reçu cet ordre, les mit dans la prison basse, et serra leurs pieds dans les ceps.
Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25 Or, au milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas priant, louaient Dieu; et ceux qui étaient dans la prison, les entendaient.
And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 Tout-à-coup il se fit un grand tremblement de terre, de sorte que les fondements de la prison furent ébranlés. Et aussitôt toutes les portes s’ouvrirent, et les liens de tous les prisonniers furent brisés.
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.
27 Alors, réveillé et voyant les portes de la prison ouvertes, le geôlier tira son épée, et il voulait se tuer, pensant que les prisonniers s’étaient enfuis.
And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28 Mais Paul cria d’une voix forte, disant: Ne te fais pas de mal, car nous sommes tous ici.
But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
29 Et le geôlier, ayant demandé de la lumière, entra; et, tout tremblant, il tomba aux pieds de Paul et de Silas;
Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 Et les faisant sortir, il demanda: Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 Ils lui répondirent: Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta maison.
And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
32 Et ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, à lui et à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.
33 Et lui, les prenant à cette même heure de la nuit, il lava leurs plaies, et il fut baptisé, lui et toute sa maison, aussitôt après.
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed [their] stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.
34 Puis, les ayant conduits chez lui, il leur servit à manger; et il se réjouit avec toute sa maison de ce qu’il avait cru en Dieu.
And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.
35 Lorsqu’il fit jour, les magistrats envoyèrent les licteurs, disant: Laisse aller ces hommes.
And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
36 Aussitôt le geôlier rapporta ces paroles à Paul: Les magistrats ont mandé de vous relâcher; maintenant donc, sortez et allez en paix.
And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.
37 Mais Paul dit aux licteurs: Après nous avoir publiquement déchirés de verges, sans jugement, nous, citoyens romains, ils nous ont mis en prison, et maintenant ils nous renvoient en secret? Il n’en sera pas ainsi, mais qu’ils viennent,
But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast [us] into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.
38 Et nous délivrent eux-mêmes. Les licteurs rapportèrent donc ces paroles aux magistrats. Or ceux-ci furent saisis de crainte, ayant appris qu’ils étaient Romains.
And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates: and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.
39 Ils vinrent donc les supplier; et les faisant sortir, ils les prièrent de se retirer de la ville.
And they came and besought them, and brought [them] out, and desired [them] to depart out of the city.
40 Or, sortant de la prison, ils allèrent chez Lydie; et ayant vu les frères, ils les consolèrent et partirent.
And they went out of the prison, and entered into [the house of] Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.
