2 Samuel 19

1 On avertit alors Joab que le roi pleurait et se lamentait sur son fils;

And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.

2 et ce jour-là la victoire fut changée en deuil pour toute l’armée, parce que tout le peuple sut que le roi était affligé de la mort d’Absalom.

And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day, The king grieveth for his son.

3 Les troupes entrèrent ce jour-là dans la ville sans oser presque se montrer, comme une armée défaite, et qui aurait fui le combat.

And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people that are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.

4 Le roi cependant, ayant la tête couverte, criait à haute voix: Mon fils Absalom! Absalom, mon fils, mon fils!

And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

5 Joab entra donc au lieu où était le roi, et lui dit: Vous avez aujourd’hui couvert de confusion tous les serviteurs qui ont sauvé votre vie, et la vie de vos fils et de vos filles, la vie de vos femmes et de vos concubines.

And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;

6 Vous aimez ceux qui vous haïssent, et vous haïssez ceux qui vous aiment. Vous avez fait voir aujourd’hui que vous ne vous mettez en peine ni de vos officiers ni de vos soldats; et je vois bien que si Absalom vivait, et que nous eussions tous été tués, vous seriez satisfait.

in that thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee. For thou hast declared this day, that princes and servants are nought unto thee: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.

7 Venez donc maintenant vous montrer à vos serviteurs; faites-leur plaisir en leur parlant; car je vous jure par le Seigneur que si vous ne le faites, vous n’aurez pas cette nuit un seul homme auprès de vous, et vous vous trouverez dans un plus grand péril que vous n’avez jamais été depuis votre jeunesse jusqu’à ce jour.

Now therefore arise, go forth and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry a man with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that hath befallen thee from thy youth until now.

8 Le roi alla donc s’asseoir à la porte de la ville; et le peuple ayant été averti qu’il était là, tout le monde vint se présenter devant lui. Cependant Israël s’était enfui dans ses tentes.

Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate: and all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his tent.

9 Or tout le peuple dans toutes les tribus s’entredisait à l’envi: Le roi nous a délivrés de nos ennemis; il nous a sauvés de la main des Philistins; et il a dû fuir hors du pays à cause d’Absalom.

And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land from Absalom.

10 D’autre part, Absalom que nous avions sacré pour roi est mort dans le combat: qu’attendez-vous donc, et pourquoi ne ramenez-vous point le roi?

And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?

11 Or le roi David envoya dire aux grands prêtres Sadoc et Abiathar: Parlez aux anciens de Juda, et dites-leur: Pourquoi êtes-vous les derniers à ramener le roi en sa maison? (Car ce que disait tout Israël était parvenu jusqu’au roi.)

And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, [to bring him] to his house.

12 Vous êtes mes frères, vous êtes mes os et ma chair; pourquoi êtes-vous les derniers à ramener le roi?

Ye are my brethren, ye are my bone and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?

13 Dites aussi à Amasa: N’es-tu pas mes os et ma chair? Que Dieu me traite avec toute sa sévérité, si je ne te fais pas pour toujours général de mon armée à la place de Joab.

And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

14 Il gagna ainsi le cœur de tous les hommes de Juda, qui lui envoyèrent dire: Revenez avec tous vos serviteurs.

And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as [the heart of] one man; so that they sent unto the king, [saying], Return thou, and all thy servants.

15 Le roi revint donc, et s’avança jusqu’au Jourdain; et tout Juda vint au-devant de lui jusqu’à Galgala, pour lui faire passer le fleuve.

So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over Jordan.

16 Or Séméi de Bahurim, fils de Géra, de la tribu de Benjamin, vint en grande hâte avec ceux de Juda au-devant du roi David,

And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.

17 suivi de mille hommes de Benjamin. Siba, serviteur de la maison de Saül, vint aussi avec ses quinze fils et vingt serviteurs. Se précipitant dans le Jourdain en face du roi,

And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went through Jordan in the presence of the king.

18 ils le traversèrent à gué pour faire passer toute la maison du roi, et pour agir selon ses ordres. Lorsque le roi eut passé le Jourdain, Séméi, fils de Géra, se prosternant devant lui,

And there went over a ferry boat to bring over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, when he was come over Jordan.

19 lui dit: Ne me traitez pas, mon seigneur, selon mon iniquité; oubliez les injures que vous avez reçues de votre serviteur le jour où vous sortiez de Jérusalem; et que votre cœur, mon seigneur le roi, n’en conserve pas de ressentiment.

And he said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.

20 Car je reconnais le crime que j’ai commis: c’est pourquoi je suis venu aujourd’hui le premier de toute la maison de Joseph au-devant de mon seigneur le roi.

For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come this day the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.

21 Abisaï, fils de Sarvia, dit alors: Ces paroles suffiront-elles pour sauver la vie à Séméi, lui qui a maudit l’oint du Seigneur?

But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed?

22 Mais David répondit à Abisaï: Qu’y a-t-il entre vous et moi, enfants de Sarvia? Pourquoi me devenez-vous aujourd’hui des tentateurs? Est-ce ici un jour à faire mourir un Israélite? Et puis-je ignorer que je devins aujourd’hui roi d’Israël?

And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

23 Alors il dit à Séméi: Tu ne mourras point; et il le lui jura.

And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.

24 Miphiboseth, fils de Saül, vint aussi au-devant du roi. Depuis le jour où David était sorti de Jérusalem jusqu’à celui-ci où il revenait en paix, il n’avait ni lavé ses pieds, ni fait sa barbe, ni pris aucun soin de ses vêtements.

And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.

25 Lorsqu’il vint au-devant du roi à Jérusalem, le roi lui dit: Miphiboseth, pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu avec moi?

And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?

26 Miphiboseth lui répondit: Monseigneur le roi, mon serviteur n’a pas voulu m’obéir; car, étant boiteux, je lui avais dit de préparer un âne à votre serviteur pour vous suivre.

And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go with the king; because thy servant is lame.

27 Et au lieu de le faire, il est allé m’accuser devant mon seigneur. Mais pour vous, monseigneur le roi, vous êtes comme un ange de Dieu; faites tout ce qu’il vous plaira.

And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.

28 Car, tandis que vous pouviez traiter toute la maison de mon père comme digne de mort, vous m’avez donné place à votre table. De quoi donc me pourrais-je plaindre avec quelque justice, et quel sujet aurais-je de vous importuner encore?

For all my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more unto the king?

29 Le roi lui répondit: Pourquoi tant de paroles! Ce que j’ai ordonné subsistera. Toi et Siba partagez le bien.

And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I say, Thou and Ziba divide the land.

30 Miphiboseth répondit au roi: Qu’il prenne même tout, puisque monseigneur le roi est revenu heureusement dans sa maison.

And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come in peace unto his own house:

31 Berzellaï, de Galaad, descendit de Rogelim, et accompagna aussi le roi jusqu’au Jourdain; et il était prêt à le conduire encore au-delà du fleuve.

And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.

32 C’était un homme très âgé, qui avait quatre-vingts ans. Il avait fourni des vivres au roi lorsqu’il était au camp; car il était extrêmement riche.

Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.

33 Le roi lui dit donc: Viens avec moi, afin que tu vives en repos auprès de moi à Jérusalem.

And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will sustain thee with me in Jerusalem.

34 Berzellaï dit au roi: Combien d’années ai-je encore à vivre, pour que j’aille avec le roi à Jérusalem?

And Barzillai said unto the king, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?

35 J’ai aujourd’hui quatre-vingts ans; mes sens ont-ils assez de vigueur pour discerner le doux d’avec l’amer? Puis-je trouver quelque plaisir à boire et à manger, ou à entendre la voix des chanteurs et des chanteuses? Pourquoi votre serviteur serait-il à charge à monseigneur le roi?

I am this day fourscore years old: can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?

36 Je vous suivrai encore un peu après avoir passé le Jourdain; mais je n’ai point mérité la faveur que vous voulez me faire.

Thy servant would but just go over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?

37 Permettez-moi donc de m’en retourner, afin que je meure dans ma ville, et que je sois enseveli auprès de mon père et de ma mère. Mais, monseigneur le roi, voici Chamaam, votre serviteur, que vous pouvez emmener avec vous, pour lui faire du bien comme il vous plaira.

Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.

38 Le roi dit à Berzellaï: Que Chamaam passe avec moi; je ferai pour lui tout ce que tu voudras, et je t’accorderai tout ce que tu me demanderas.

And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.

39 Le roi passa ensuite le Jourdain avec tout le peuple; il baisa Berzellaï, et le bénit, et Berzellaï retourna dans sa maison.

And all the people went over Jordan, and the king went over: and the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

40 Le roi passa donc à Galgala, et Chamaam avec lui. Lorsque le roi passa le Jourdain, il fut accompagné de toute la tribu de Juda, et il ne s’y trouva que la moitié des autres tribus.

So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him: and all the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel.

41 Tous ceux d’Israël s’adressèrent donc en foule au roi, et lui dirent: Pourquoi nos frères de Juda nous ont-ils enlevé le roi, et lui ont-ils fait passer le Jourdain avec sa maison et toute sa suite?

And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king; and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and brought the king, and his household, over Jordan, and all David’s men with him?

42 Tous ceux de Juda leur répondirent: C’est que le roi nous touche de plus près; quel sujet avez-vous de vous fâcher? Avons-nous vécu aux dépens du roi, ou nous a-t-on fait quelques présents?

And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?

43 Ceux d’Israël leur répondirent: Le roi nous considère comme étant dix fois plus que vous; et ainsi David nous appartient plus qu’à vous. Pourquoi nous avez-vous fait cette injure, et pourquoi n’avons-nous pas été avertis les premiers pour ramener notre roi? Mais ceux de Juda répondirent un peu durement à ceux d’Israël.

And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king; and we have also more [right] in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
