1 Samuel 5

1 Or. les Philistins prirent l’arche de Dieu, et la transportèrent de la pierre du Secours à Azot.

Now, the Philistines, having taken the ark of God, —brought it in from Eben-ezer, unto Ashdod.

2 Ainsi les Philistins prirent l’arche de Dieu, et ils la portèrent dans le temple de Dagon, et la placèrent auprès de Dagon.

And, when the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, —and placed it by the side of Dagon.

3 Et lorsque les Azotiens se furent levés le lendemain au point du jour, voilà que Dagon gisait renversé contre terre devant l’arche du Seigneur; et ils prirent Dagon, et le rétablirent à sa place.

And, when they of Ashdod rose early on the morrow and entered into the house of Dagon, they looked and lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh, —so they took Dagon and restored him to his place.

4 Et de nouveau se levant de matin le jour suivant, ils trouvèrent Dagon gisant sur sa face contre terre, devant l’arche du Seigneur; mais la tête de Dagon et les deux paumes de ses mains coupées étaient sur le seuil de la porte,

And, when they rose up early in the morning of the morrow, lo! Dagon, was lying prostrate on his face to the earth, before the ark of Yahweh—and, the head of Dagon, and both the palms of his hands, had been cut off against the threshold, only, Dagon himself, was left to him.

5 Et le tronc seul de Dagon était demeuré à sa place. Pour ce motif, les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans son temple, ne mettent pas le pied sur le seuil de la porte de Dagon à Azot jusqu’au présent jour.

For this cause, do not the priests of Dagon, nor any that enter into the house of Dagon, tread upon the threshold of Dagon, in Ashdod, —until this day.

6 Or, la main du Seigneur s’appesantit sur les Azotiens, et il les désola; et il frappa Azot et ses confins à la partie la plus secrète du corps. Et les villages et les champs au milieu de cette contrée fourmillèrent de rats qui naquirent, et la confusion causée par une grande mortalité régna dans la ville.

Then was the hand of Yahweh heavy against them of Ashdod, and he astounded them, —and smote with tumours Ashdod and her bounds.

7 Cependant les hommes d’ Azot voyant une plaie de cette sorte, dirent: Que l’arche du Dieu d’Israël ne demeure pas chez nous, parce que sa main pèse sur nous et sur Dagon notre Dieu.

And, when the men of Ashdod saw that, so, it was, then kept they saying, Let not the ark of the God of Israel abide with us, for, hard, is his hand upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

8 Et ils envoyèrent chercher, et rassemblèrent tous les satrapes des Philistins auprès d’eux, et dirent: Que ferons-nous de l’arche du Dieu d’Israël? Et les Géthéens répondirent: Que l’arche du Dieu d’Israël soit conduite autour du pays. Et ils conduisirent l’arche du Dieu d’Israël autour du pays.

So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said—What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they said: To Gath, let the ark of the God of Israel go round. So they took round the ark of the God of Israel.

9 Or, eux la conduisant ainsi, la main du Seigneur faisait dans chaque cité un très grand carnage, et il frappait les hommes de chacune de ces villes, depuis le petit jusqu’au grand, et leurs intestins sortant, se pourrissaient. Aussi les Géthéens tinrent conseil et se firent des sièges de peaux.

And so it was, after they had taken it round, then was the hand of Yahweh against the city, with an exceeding great consternation, and he smote the men of the city, from the least, even unto the greatest, —and they brake out with tumours.

10 Ils envoyèrent donc l’arche de Dieu à Accaron. Et lorsque l’arche de Dieu fut venue à Accaron, les Accaronites s’écrièrent, disant: Ils nous ont amené l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, pour qu’elle nous tue, nous et notre peuple.

Then sent they the ark of God to Ekron, —and so it was, when the ark of God entered Ekron, that the Ekronites made outcry, saying—They have brought round unto me the ark of the God of Israel, to slay me, and my people!

11 C’est pourquoi ils envoyèrent chercher et rassemblèrent tous les satrapes des Philistins, qui dirent: Renvoyez l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, et qu’elle retourne en son lieu, et qu’elle ne nous tue pas avec notre peuple.

So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said—Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and restore it to its own place, that it slay not me, and my people. For there had come a deadly consternation, throughout all the city, heavy exceedingly, was the hand of God there.

12 Car la frayeur de la mort se répandait dans chaque ville, et la main de Dieu devenait extrêmement pesante; les hommes aussi, qui n’étaient pas morts, étaient frappés à la partie la plus secrète du corps; et le cri lamentable de chaque cité montait jusqu’au ciel.

And, the men who died not, were smitten with the tumours, —so the cry of the city for help, ascended the heavens.
