Luc 18
1 Jésus leur raconta une parabole, pour montrer qu'il faut prier toujours, sans jamais se lasser.
Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and never despair.
2 Il dit: Il y avait dans une ville un juge qui ne craignait point Dieu, et qui n'avait d'égards pour aucun homme.
‘There was,’ he said, ‘in a certain town a judge, who had no fear of God nor regard for people.
3 Il y avait aussi dans cette ville une veuve, qui venait à lui et lui disait: Fais-moi justice de ma partie adverse.
In the same town there was a widow who went to him again and again, and said “Grant me justice against my opponent.”
4 Pendant longtemps, il ne le voulut pas. Mais ensuite, il se dit en lui-même: Quoique je ne craigne pas Dieu et que je n'aie d'égards pour aucun homme,
For a time the judge refused, but afterwards he said to himself “Although I am without fear of God or regard for people,
5 néanmoins, comme cette veuve m'importune, je lui ferai justice, afin qu'elle ne vienne pas toujours me rompre la tête.
yet, as this widow is so troublesome, I will grant her justice, to stop her from plaguing me with her endless visits.”’
6 Puis le Seigneur ajouta: Vous entendez ce que dit le juge inique?
Then the Master added, ‘Listen to what this iniquitous judge says!
7 Et Dieu ne ferait pas justice à ses élus, qui crient à lui jour et nuit, et il tarderait à les secourir!
And God – won’t he see that his own people, who cry to him night and day, have justice done them – though he holds his hand?
8 Je vous dis qu'il leur fera prompte justice. Mais quand le Fils de l'homme viendra, trouvera-t-il la foi sur la terre?
He will, I tell you, give them justice soon enough! Yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?’
9 Il dit aussi cette parabole, en vue de certaines personnes qui se flattaient d'être justes et qui méprisaient les autres:
Another time, speaking to people who were satisfied that they were religious, and who regarded everyone else with scorn, Jesus told this parable –
10 Deux hommes montèrent au temple pour prier; l'un était pharisien, et l'autre était péager.
‘Two men went up into the Temple Courts to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax-gatherer.
11 Le pharisien, se tenant debout, priait ainsi en lui-même: Dieu, je te rends grâces de ce que je ne suis pas comme le reste des hommes, qui sont rapaces, injustes, adultères, ni même comme ce péager.
The Pharisee stood forward and began praying to himself in this way – “God, I thank you that I am not like other men – thieves, rogues, adulterers – or even like this tax-gatherer.
12 Je jeûne deux fois la semaine; je donne la dîme de tous mes revenus.
I fast twice a week, and give a tenth of everything I get to God.”
13 Le péager, se tenant éloigné, n'osait pas même lever les yeux au ciel; mais il se frappait la poitrine, en disant: O Dieu, sois apaisé envers moi, qui suis un pécheur!
Meanwhile the tax-gatherer stood at a distance, not venturing even to raise his eyes to heaven, but he kept striking his breast and saying “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
14 Je vous le déclare, celui-ci s'en retourna justifié dans sa maison plutôt que l'autre; car quiconque s'élève sera abaissé, et quiconque s'abaisse sera élevé.
This man, I tell you, went home pardoned, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, while everyone who humbles himself will be exalted.’
15 On lui présenta aussi des petits enfants, afin qu'il les touchât. Les disciples, voyant cela, reprenaient ceux qui les présentaient.
Some of the people were bringing even their babies to Jesus, for him to touch them; but, when the disciples saw it, they began to find fault with those who had brought them.
16 Mais Jésus les appela à lui, en disant: Laissez venir à moi les petits enfants, et ne les en empêchez point; car le royaume de Dieu est pour ceux qui leur ressemblent.
Jesus, however, called the little children to him. ‘Let the little children come to me,’ he said, ‘and do not hinder them, for it is to the childlike that the kingdom of God belongs.
17 En vérité, je vous le déclare, quiconque ne recevra pas le royaume de Dieu comme un petit enfant, n'y entrera pas.
I tell you, unless a man receives the kingdom of God like a child, he will not enter it at all.’
18 Alors l'un des principaux du pays demanda à Jésus: Mon bon Maître, que dois-je faire pour hériter la vie éternelle? (aiōnios g166)
And one of the leaders asked Jesus this question – ‘Good teacher, what must I do if I am to gain eternal life?’ (aiōnios g166)
19 Jésus lui répondit: Pourquoi m'appelles-tu bon? Il n'y a qu'un seul bon, c'est Dieu.
‘Why do you call me good?’ answered Jesus. ‘No one is good but God.
20 Tu connais les commandements: «Tu ne commettras point d'adultère; tu ne tueras point; tu ne déroberas point; tu ne diras point de faux témoignage; honore ton père et ta mère.»
You know the commandments – Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not say what is false about others, Honour your father and your mother.’
21 Cet homme répondit: J'ai observé toutes ces choses dès ma jeunesse.
‘I have observed all these,’ he replied, ‘from childhood.’
22 Quand Jésus eut entendu cela, il lui dit: Il te manque encore une chose; vends tout ce que tu as et distribue-le aux pauvres, et tu auras un trésor dans les cieux. Viens alors, et suis-moi.
Hearing this, Jesus said to him, ‘There is one thing still lacking in you; sell everything that you have, and distribute to the poor, and you will have wealth in heaven; then come and follow me.’
23 Mais lui, ayant entendu ces paroles, devint tout triste; car il était fort riche.
But the man became greatly distressed on hearing this, for he was extremely rich.
24 Jésus, le voyant tout triste, dit: Qu'il est difficile à ceux qui ont des richesses d'entrer dans le royaume de Dieu!
Seeing this, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘How hard it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!
25 Il est plus facile à un chameau de passer par le trou de l'aiguille, qu'il ne l'est à un riche d'entrer dans le royaume de Dieu!
It is easier, indeed, for a camel to get through a needle’s eye than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!’
26 Ceux qui l'entendaient, lui dirent: Et qui peut donc être sauvé?
‘Then who can be saved?’ asked those who heard this.
27 Il leur répondit: Ce qui est impossible aux hommes est possible à Dieu!
But Jesus said, ‘What is impossible with people is possible with God.’
28 Pierre dit alors: Pour nous, nous avons quitté ce que nous possédions, et nous t'avons suivi!
‘But we,’ said Peter, ‘we left what belonged to us and followed you.’
29 Jésus leur répondit: En vérité, je vous le déclare, tout homme qui aura quitté maison, ou femme, ou frères, ou parents, ou enfants, à cause du royaume de Dieu
‘I tell you,’ he answered, ‘that there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,
31 Ensuite Jésus prit à part les Douze, et il leur dit: Voici que nous montons à Jérusalem, et toutes les choses qui ont été écrites par les prophètes au sujet du Fils de l'homme, s'accompliront.
Gathering the Twelve round him, Jesus said to them, ‘Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem; and there everything that is written in the prophets will be done to the Son of Man.
32 Car il sera livré aux Païens; on se moquera de lui, on l'outragera, on crachera sur lui,
For he will be given up to the Gentiles, mocked, insulted and spat on;
33 et, après l'avoir battu de verges, on le fera mourir. Et le troisième jour, il ressuscitera.
they will scourge him, and then put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.’
34 Mais ils ne comprirent rien à cela: le sens de ces paroles leur était caché, et ils ne saisissaient point ce que Jésus leur disait.
The apostles did not comprehend any of this. His meaning was unintelligible to them and they did not understand what he was saying.
35 Comme Jésus approchait de Jérico, un aveugle était assis au bord du chemin et demandait l'aumône.
As Jesus was getting near Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside, begging.
36 Entendant la foule qui passait, il s'informa de ce que c'était.
Hearing a crowd going by, the man asked what was the matter;
37 On lui répondit: C'est Jésus de Nazareth qui passe.
and, when people told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing,
38 Alors il cria: Jésus, fils de David, aie pitié de moi!
he shouted out, ‘Jesus, Son of David, take pity on me!’
39 Et ceux qui allaient devant le reprenaient pour le faire taire; mais il criait encore plus fort: Fils de David, aie pitié de moi!
Those who were in front kept telling him to be quiet, but he continued to call out the louder, ‘Son of David, take pity on me!’
40 Jésus, s'étant arrêté, ordonna qu'on le lui amenât; et quand l'aveugle se fut approché, il lui demanda:
Then Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. And, when he had come close up to him, Jesus asked him,
41 Que veux-tu que je te fasse? Il répondit: Seigneur, que je recouvre la vue.
‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I want to recover my sight.’
42 Jésus lui dit: Recouvre la vue; ta foi t'a guéri!
And Jesus said, ‘Recover your sight, your faith has delivered you.’
43 A l'instant, il recouvra la vue, et il suivait Jésus, glorifiant Dieu. Tout le peuple, voyant cela, donna gloire à Dieu.
Instantly he recovered his sight, and began to follow Jesus, praising God. And all the people, on seeing it, gave glory to God.
