Actes 23
1 Paul ayant les yeux fixés sur le Sanhédrin, dit: Mes frères, je me suis conduit jusqu'à ce jour en toute bonne conscience devant Dieu.
Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
2 Alors le souverain sacrificateur, Ananias, commanda à ceux qui étaient près de Paul, de le frapper sur la bouche.
The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
3 Mais Paul lui dit: Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie! Tu sièges pour me juger selon la loi, et, au mépris de la loi, tu ordonnes qu'on me frappe!
Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
4 Ceux qui étaient là, lui dirent: Tu injuries le souverain sacrificateur de Dieu!
Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
5 Paul, répondit: Frères, je ne savais pas que ce fût le souverain sacrificateur; car il est écrit: «Tu n'outrageras pas le chef de ton peuple.»
Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
6 Paul, sachant qu'une partie d'entre eux étaient sadducéens et les autres pharisiens, s'écria devant le Sanhédrin: Mes frères, je suis pharisien, fils de pharisiens. C'est à cause de mon espérance en la résurrection des morts, que je suis mis en jugement.
But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
7 Quand il eut parlé ainsi, une discussion s'éleva entre les pharisiens et les sadducéens, et l'assemblée fut divisée.
When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
8 En effet, les sadducéens disent qu'il n'y a pas de résurrection, et qu'il n'existe ni ange, ni esprit, tandis que les pharisiens professent ces croyances.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
9 Il y eut alors une grande clameur. Quelques scribes, du parti des pharisiens, se levèrent et combattirent l'accusation, en disant: Nous ne trouvons aucun mal en cet homme. Qui sait si un esprit ou un ange ne lui a point parlé?
A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
10 Comme le tumulte augmentait, le tribun, craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par eux, commanda à la troupe de descendre, pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et le ramener dans la forteresse.
When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur apparut à Paul et lui dit: Aie bon courage! Comme tu m'as rendu témoignage à Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu me rendes témoignage à Rome.
The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
12 Quand le jour fut venu, les Juifs formèrent un complot, et s'engagèrent, sous peine d'anathème, à ne manger ni boire, tant qu'ils n'auraient pas tué Paul.
When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
13 Ils étaient plus de quarante qui avaient fait cette conjuration.
There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
14 Ils allèrent trouver les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens, et ils leur dirent: Nous nous sommes engagés, sous peine d'anathème, à ne rien manger, avant d'avoir tué Paul.
They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
15 Vous donc maintenant, adressez-vous, avec le Sanhédrin, au tribun, pour qu'il le fasse comparaître devant vous, comme si vous vouliez examiner plus à fond son affaire. Quant à nous, nous sommes prêts à le faire périr, avant qu'il soit arrivé.
Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
16 Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul, ayant été informé de ce guet-apens, se rendit à la forteresse; il y entra et avertit Paul.
But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
17 Alors Paul appela l'un des centeniers et lui dit: Mène ce jeune homme auprès du tribun: il a quelque chose à lui communiquer.
Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
18 Le centenier l'emmena donc, le conduisit chez le tribun et lui dit: Le prisonnier Paul m'a appelé et m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire.
So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
19 Le tribun prit le jeune homme par la main et, le tirant à l'écart, lui demanda: Qu'as-tu à me communiquer?
The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
20 Il répondit: Les Juifs ont résolu de te prier de faire comparaître Paul, demain, devant le Sanhédrin, comme s'il s'agissait d'instruire plus exactement son affaire.
He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
21 Mais ne les crois point; car plus de quarante d'entre eux lui dressent des embûches, et se sont engagés, sous peine d'anathème, à ne manger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué; et maintenant, ils sont prêts, n'attendant que ta réponse.
Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
22 Le tribun renvoya ce jeune homme, avec défense de dire à personne ce qu'il venait de lui révéler.
So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
23 Puis, le tribun appela deux des centeniers, et il leur dit: Tenez prêts, dès la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats, soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents archers, pour aller jusqu'à Césarée.
He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
24 Préparez aussi des montures, afin de conduire Paul sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix.
He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
25 Ensuite il écrivit à celui-ci une lettre, ainsi conçue:
He wrote a letter like this:
26 Claude Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut!
“Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
27 Les Juifs, s'étant saisis de cet homme, allaient le tuer, quand je suis survenu avec la troupe et le leur ai enlevé, ayant appris qu'il était citoyen romain.
“This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
28 Comme je voulais savoir de quoi ils l'accusaient, je le fis conduire devant leur Sanhédrin.
Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
29 J'ai trouvé qu'on l'attaquait à propos de questions relatives à leur loi, mais sans qu'on lui imputât aucune faute méritant la mort ou la prison.
I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
30 Cependant, ayant appris qu'on dressait des embûches contre cet homme, je te l'ai aussitôt envoyé, et j'ai fait savoir à ses accusateurs qu'ils eussent à parler contre lui devant toi.
When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
31 Les soldats prirent donc Paul, selon l'ordre qu'ils avaient reçu, et ils le menèrent de nuit jusqu'à Antipatris.
So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers partir avec lui, et ils retournèrent à la forteresse.
But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
33 Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul.
When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
34 Après avoir lu cette lettre, le gouverneur demanda à Paul de quelle province il était. En apprenant qu'il était de la Cilicie, il lui dit:
When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
35 Je t'entendrai quand tes accusateurs seront venus. Puis, il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d'Hérode.
“I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
