Romains 11
1 Je demande maintenant si «Dieu a rejeté son peuple?» Non certainement; moi-même suis un Israélite, descendant d'Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamin.
I say then, Has God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 «Dieu n'a pas rejeté le peuple» qu’il a autrefois préféré. Ne savez-vous pas ce que dit l'Écriture dans l'histoire d'Élie, et comme celui-ci se plaint à Dieu d'Israël:
God has not cast away his people which he foreknew. Know you not what the scripture says of Elijah? how he makes intercession to God against Israel saying,
3 «Seigneur, ils ont tué tes prophètes, renversé tes autels, moi seul ai survécu et ils en veulent à ma vie!»
Lord, they have killed your prophets, and dig down your altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
4 Mais que lui dit l'oracle: «Je me suis réservé sept mille hommes qui n'ont pas fléchi le genou devant Baal»
But what says the answer of God to him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
5 Eh bien! il y a de même aujourd'hui une réserve par suite de l'élection qui est une grâce.
Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.
6 Mais, si elle est une grâce, elle n'est donc pas le fruit des oeuvres, autrement la grâce ne serait plus une grâce.
And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
7 Qu'est-ce à dire? Israël n'a pas obtenu ce qu'il cherche, les élus l'ont obtenu; et le reste s'est endurci
What then? Israel has not obtained that which he seeks for; but the election has obtained it, and the rest were blinded.
8 selon qu'il est écrit: «Dieu leur a donné un esprit d'engourdissement, Des yeux pour ne pas voir, Des oreilles pour ne pas entendre jusqu'à aujourd'hui, »
(According as it is written, God has given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear; ) to this day.
9 et David dit: «Que leur table leur soit un filet, un piège, Une trappe, un châtiment;
And David says, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and a recompense to them:
10 Que leurs yeux soient obscurcis pour ne pas voir, Que leur dos soit à jamais courbé.»
Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back always.
11 Je demande alors si c'est pour tomber qu'ils ont ainsi bronché? Non certainement, mais leur faute a eu pour résultat l'annonce du salut aux païens de manière à provoquer leur émulation.
I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come to the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
12 Si, par leur faute, ils ont enrichi le monde, si, par un moment de retard, ils ont enrichi les païens, que sera leur entrée en masse dans l'Église?
Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fullness?
13 C'est à vous, païens, que je parle: tout en étant apôtre des païens je couvre mon ministère de gloire
For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify my office:
14 en m'efforçant de provoquer l'émulation de ceux de ma race et d'en sauver quelques-uns.
If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them.
15 Car, si leur rejet a eu pour résultat la réconciliation du monde, que sera leur admission? ce sera vraiment une résurrection.
For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
16 Si les prémices sont saintes, toute la masse l'est aussi; si la racine est sainte, les rameaux le sont aussi.
For if the first fruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches.
17 Si quelques rameaux ont été retranchés, si toi, olivier sauvage, as été greffé à leur place, si tu as été mis en communication avec la racine et la sève de l'olivier,
And if some of the branches be broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them partake of the root and fatness of the olive tree;
18 garde-toi bien de t'enorgueillir aux dépens des branches coupées. Si tu t'enorgueillis, souviens-toi que ce n'est pas toi qui portes la racine, c'est la racine qui te porte.
Boast not against the branches. But if you boast, you bore not the root, but the root you.
19 — Mais les rameaux, diras-tu, ont été coupés pour que je sois greffé.
You will say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.
20 — D'accord, ils ont été coupés faute de foi; toi tu restes-là par ta foi; garde-toi de te vanter, tremble au contraire;
Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Be not high minded, but fear:
21 si Dieu n'a pas épargné les rameaux naturels, il pourrait ne pas t'épargner non plus.
For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not you.
22 Remarque donc et la bonté et la sévérité de Dieu: sévérité pour ceux qui sont tombés, bonté pour toi, si toutefois tu te maintiens dans cette bonté, autrement toi aussi tu seras retranché;
Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness: otherwise you also shall be cut off.
23 et quant à eux, s'ils ne persistent pas dans leur incrédulité, ils seront greffés;
And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.
24 Dieu a bien le pouvoir de les greffer de nouveau, car si toi, tu as été coupé sur un olivier sauvage de sa nature et as été greffé, contrairement à ta nature, sur l'olivier franc, à plus forte raison, eux, qui appartiennent à l'olivier franc de sa nature, pourront être greffés sur leur propre tronc.
For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?
25 Pour que vous ne preniez pas de vous-mêmes une trop haute opinion, frères, je ne veux pas vous laisser ignorer une chose restée jusqu'ici secrète: l'aveuglement d'une partie d'Israël durera jusqu'à ce que la totalité des païens soit entrée dans l'Église
For I would not, brothers, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in.
26 et, après cela, tout Israël sera sauvé, comme il est écrit: «De Sion viendra le Libérateur Et il éloignera de Jacob l'impiété.
And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
27 Telle est l'alliance que je conclurai avec eux, Quand j'effarerai leurs péchés.»
For this is my covenant to them, when I shall take away their sins.
28 A regarder à l'Évangile, ils sont ennemis de Dieu à cause de vous, à regarder à l'élection ils sont des bien-aimés à cause de leurs pères.
As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the father’s sakes.
29 Dieu ne se repent jamais ni des grâces qu'il accorde ni de l'appel qu'il adresse.
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
30 De même que vous autrefois vous désobéissiez à Dieu et que maintenant vous avez obtenu miséricorde par suite de leur désobéissance,
For as you in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief:
31 eux de même ont maintenant désobéi à cause de la miséricorde qui vous est accordée et afin de l'obtenir maintenant à leur tour.
Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy.
32 Car Dieu a enveloppé tous les hommes dans la désobéissance pour leur faire à tous miséricorde. (eleēsē g1653)
For God has concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy on all. (eleēsē g1653)
33 O profondeur de la richesse, de la sagesse et de la science de Dieu! Que ses jugements sont insondables! que ses voies sont impénétrables!
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
34 car: «Qui a connu la pensée du Seigneur; De qui a-t-il pris conseil?»
For who has known the mind of the Lord? or who has been his counselor?
35 et encore: De qui est-il l'obligé? Et qui doit recevoir de lui en retour?»
Or who has first given to him, and it shall be recompensed to him again?
