Matthieu 8
1 Quand il descendit de la montagne, de grandes troupes le suivirent.
And when he had descended from the mountain, great crowds followed him.
2 Survint un lépreux qui s'approcha et se prosterna. devant lui: «Seigneur, dit-il, si tu le veux, tu peux me guérir.»
And behold, a leper, drawing near, adored him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you are able to cleanse me.”
3 Jésus étendit la main, le toucha et dit: «Je le veux, sois guéri»; et à l'instant il fut guéri de sa lèpre.
And Jesus, extending his hand, touched him, saying: “I am willing. Be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4 Jésus ajouta: «Garde-toi de parler de ceci à personne; mais va te montrer au prêtre et offre le don prescrit par Moïse; que ce leur soit un témoignage.»
And Jesus said to him: “See to it that you tell no one. But go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses instructed, as a testimony for them.”
5 Comme il entrait dans Capharnaüm, un centurion s'approcha de lui, lui adressant cette prière:
And when he had entered into Capernaum, a centurion approached, petitioning him,
6 Seigneur, mon serviteur est dans ma maison, étendu sur son lit, paralytique et en proie à de cruelles souffrances.»
and saying, “Lord, my servant lies at home paralyzed and badly tormented.”
7 Jésus lui répondit: «J'irai, et je le guérirai.»
And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
8 Alors le centurion reprit: «Seigneur, je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit, mais donne seulement un ordre et mon serviteur sera guéri.
And responding, the centurion said: “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
9 Car moi (qui ne suis pourtant qu'un subordonné) j'ai sous mes ordres des soldats, et si je dis à l'un: «va-t'en» — il s'en va; à l'autre: «viens» — il vient; à mon esclave: «fais cela — il le fait.»
For I, too, am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 Jésus fut dans l'admiration de ce langage; et s'adressant à ceux qui le suivaient: «Je vous le dis en vérité, chez personne, même en Israël, je n'ai trouvé une foi aussi grande?
And, hearing this, Jesus wondered. And he said to those following him: “Amen I say to you, I have not found so great a faith in Israel.
11 Je vous déclare que plusieurs viendront de l'Orient et de l'Occident et se mettront à table avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob dans le Royaume des cieux,
For I say to you, that many shall come from the east and the west, and they shall sit at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
12 tandis que les fils du Royaume seront jetés dehors dans les ténèbres. Là seront les pleurs et le grincement des dents.»
But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
13 Ensuite Jésus dit au centurion; «Va et qu'il te soit fait comme tu as cru.» Et, à cette heure même, le serviteur fut guéri.
And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go, and just as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And the servant was healed at that very hour.
14 Arrivé à la maison de Pierre, Jésus vit la belle-mère de celui-ci, couchée; elle avait la fièvre.
And when Jesus had arrived at the house of Peter, he saw his mother-in-law lying ill with a fever.
15 Il lui toucha la main et la fièvre disparut; aussi se leva-t-elle et se mit-elle à les servir.
And he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose up and ministered to them.
16 Le soir venu, on lui apporta beaucoup de démoniaques, et d'un mot il chassait les Esprits. Il guérit aussi tous ceux qui étaient malades,
And when evening arrived, they brought to him many who had demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word. And he healed all those having maladies,
17 afin que fût accompli ce qu'avait annoncé le prophète Ésaïe disant: «C'est lui qui a pris nos infirmités et porté nos maladies.»
in order to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah, saying, “He took our infirmities, and he carried away our diseases.”
18 Voyant de nombreuses troupes autour de lui, Jésus donna l'ordre de passer sur l'autre rive.
Then Jesus, seeing the great crowds encircling him, gave orders to go across the sea.
19 Alors un Scribe, s'avançant, lui dit: «Maître, je te suivrai partout où tu iras.»
And one scribe, approaching, said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you will go.”
20 Jésus lui répond: «Les renards ont des tanières et les oiseaux du ciel ont des nids; mais le Fils de l'homme n'a pas où reposer sa tête.»
And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have dens, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to rest his head.”
21 «Seigneur, lui dit un autre des disciples, permets-moi d'aller d'abord ensevelir mon père.»
Then another of his disciples said to him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”
22 «Suis-moi! Lui répond Jésus, et laisse les morts ensevelir leurs morts!»
But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and allow the dead to bury their dead.”
23 Il monta dans la barque, suivi de ses disciples.
And climbing into a boat, his disciples followed him.
24 Soudain une grande tempête s'éleva sur la mer, à tel point que la barque était couverte par les vagues. Lui, il dormait.
And behold, a great tempest occurred in the sea, so much so that the boat was covered with waves; yet truly, he was sleeping.
25 Les disciples s'approchèrent de lui et le réveillèrent. «Sauve-nous, Seigneur, lui dirent-ils, nous périssons!»
And his disciples drew near to him, and they awakened him, saying: “Lord, save us, we are perishing.”
26 Il leur répondit: «Pourquoi vous effrayez-vous, hommes de peu de foi?» Alors il se leva, fit des menaces aux vents et à la mer, et il se fit un grand calme.
And Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid, O little in faith?” Then rising up, he commanded the winds, and the sea. And a great tranquility occurred.
27 Ces hommes dirent alors remplis d'admiration: «Qui est-il pour que lui obéissent et les vents et la mer?»
Moreover, the men wondered, saying: “What kind of man is this? For even the winds and the sea obey him.”
28 Quand il fut arrivé à l'autre bord, dans le pays des Gadaréniens, vinrent à sa rencontre deux démoniaques, sortant des sépulcres. Ils étaient si dangereux que personne n'osait passer par ce chemin.
And when he had arrived across the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes, he was met by two who had demons, who were so exceedingly savage, as they went out from among the tombs, that no one was able to cross by that way.
29 Qu'y a-t-il entre nous et toi, fils de Dieu?» se mirent-ils à crier. «Es-tu venu ici pour nous torturer avant le temps.»
And behold, they cried out, saying: “What are we to you, O Jesus, the Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
30 Or, il y avait, dans l'éloignement, un nombreux troupeau de pourceaux qui paissaient.
Now there was, not far from them, a herd of many swine feeding.
31 Les démons lui adressaient cette demande: «Si tu nous chasses, envoie-nous dans ce troupeau de pourceaux.»
Then the demons petitioned him, saying: “If you cast us from here, send us into the herd of swine.”
32 «Allez!» leur dit Jésus. Alors ils partirent et entrèrent dans les pourceaux; et voilà que, d'une course impétueuse, le troupeau tout entier se précipita dans la mer et périt dans les flots.
And he said to them, “Go.” And they, going out, went into the swine. And behold, the entire herd suddenly rushed along a steep place into the sea. And they died in the waters.
33 Les gardeurs prirent la fuite; ils allèrent à la ville tout raconter, et ce qui était arrivé aux démoniaques.
Then the shepherds fled, and arriving in the city, they reported on all this, and on those who had had the demons.
34 Là dessus, la ville entière sortit au devant de Jésus, et, quand ces gens le virent ils le prièrent de s'éloigner de leur pays.
And behold, the entire city went out to meet Jesus. And having seen him, they petitioned him, so that he would cross from their borders.
