1 Après avoir ainsi parlé, Jésus sortit avec ses disciples et traversa le torrent de Kédron. Là se trouvait un jardin dans lequel il entra, et eux avec lui.
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
2 Judas, celui qui le livrait, connaissait cet ' endroit, parce que Jésus y était souvent venu avec ses disciples.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Ayant pris une escouade de soldats et accompagné d'agents fournis par les chefs des prêtres et les Pharisiens, Judas arriva donc en cet endroit avec des lanternes, des torches et des armes.
Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Jésus, sachant tout ce qui allait lui arriver, s'avança et leur dit: «Qui cherchez-vous?» —
Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 «Jésus de Nazareth», lui répondirent ils. — Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi.» Au milieu d'eux se tenait Judas, celui qui le livrait.
They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 Mais à peine Jésus avait-il dit: «C'est moi», qu'ils firent un mouvement en arrière et tombèrent sur le sol.
When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
7 Il leur demanda une seconde fois: «Qui cherchez-vous?» — «Jésus de Nazareth», dirent-ils.
Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 — Jésus reprit: «Je vous ai dit que c'est moi; si donc c'est moi que vous cherchez, laissez ceux-ci s'en aller.»
Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”
9 (C'était afin que fût accomplie la parole qu'il avait dite: «De ceux que tu m'as donnés, je n'en ai perdu aucun.»)
that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”
10 Simon Pierre, cependant, avait une épée, et la tira. Il en frappa le serviteur du grand-prêtre et lui coupa l'oreille droite. — Ce serviteur s se nommait Malchus. —
Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 «Remets ton épée dans le fourreau», dit alors Jésus à Pierre; «la coupe que m'a donnée le Père, ne la boirai-je pas?»
Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”
12 Cependant la cohorte, le tribun et les agents des Juifs se saisirent de Jésus et le garrottèrent.
So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him,
13 Ils commencèrent par le mener chez Hanne, beau-père de Kaïphe.
and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 (Kaïphe était le grand-prêtre de l'année, et c'était lui qui avait ouvert aux Juifs cet avis: Il vaut mieux qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple.»)
Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
15 Simon Pierre et un autre disciple avaient suivi Jésus. Cet autre disciple, étant de la connaissance du grand-prêtre, entra en même temps que Jésus dans la cour.
Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;
16 Quant à Pierre, il était resté dehors contre la porte. L'autre disciple, qui était de la connaissance du grand-prêtre, sortit pour parler à la portière et le fit entrer.
but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Cette servante, qui gardait la porte, dit alors à Pierre: «N'es-tu pas toi aussi des disciples de cet homme?» —
Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
18 «Non; pas moi», répondit-il. Il faisait froid; les esclaves et les hommes de service, groupés autour d'un brasier allumé par eux, se chauffaient; et Pierre, se tenant au milieu d'eux, se chauffait aussi.
Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 Le grand-prêtre cependant interrogea Jésus sur ses disciples et sur son enseignement.
The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 Jésus lui répondit: «C'est ouvertement que j'ai parlé au monde; j'ai toujours enseigné dans la synagogue et dans le Temple, là où se réunissent tous les Juifs, et je n'ai rien dit en cachette.
Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.
21 Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? demande à mes auditeurs de quoi je leur ai parlé. Eux savent bien ce que j'ai dit.»
Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things which I said.”
22 A ces mots, un des hommes de service qui se tenait à côté de Jésus, lui donna un coup de bâton en lui disant: «Est-ce de la sorte que tu réponds au grand-prêtre.»
When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jésus s'adressa à cet homme: «Si j'ai mal parlé, prouve ce que j'ai dit de mal; si j'ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu?»
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
24 Hanne l'envoya, tout garrotté, à Kaïphe, le grand-prêtre.
Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
25 Cependant Simon Pierre se tenait là et se chauffait. «N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, de ses disciples?» lui dit-on. Il le nia. «Moi? dit-il, non pas.»
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26 Un des serviteurs du grand-prêtre, parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, lui dit: «Est-ce que, moi-même, je ne t'ai pas vu, avec lui, dans le jardin?»
One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
27 Encore une fois Pierre nia, et à ce moment un coq chanta.
Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
28 De chez Kaïphe, ils menèrent Jésus au prétoire; le jour se levait. Eux-mêmes n'entrèrent pas dans le prétoire afin de ne pas contracter de souillure et de pouvoir manger la Pâque.
They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29 Pilate vint donc à eux dehors. «Quelle accusation, dit-il, portez-vous contre cet homme?»
Pilate therefore went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30 Ils lui répondirent par ces paroles: «Si ce n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré.»
They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”
31 Pilate leur répliqua: «Prenez-le, et jugez-le vous-mêmes, suivant votre Loi.» — «Nous n'avons pas le droit, répondirent les Juifs, de mettre personne à mort.»
Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is illegal for us to put anyone to death,”
32 (C'était afin que fût accomplie la parole que Jésus avait dite pour indiquer de quelle mort il allait mourir.)
that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
33 Pilate rentra donc dans le prétoire, fit venir Jésus et lui dit: «Tu es le Roi des Juifs?» —
Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 «Est-ce de toi-même que tu dis cela, répondit Jésus, ou d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi?» —
Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
35 «Est-ce que je suis Juif, moi!» répliqua Pilate, «c'est ta nation, ce sont les chefs des prêtres qui t'ont livré à moi; qu'as-tu fait?»
Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”
36 Jésus répondit: «Ma Royauté n'est pas de ce monde. Si ma Royauté était de ce monde, mes sujets combattraient pour moi, pour que je ne fusse pas livré aux Juifs; mais ma Royauté n'est pas d'ici.»
Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”
37 Alors Pilate lui dit: «Ainsi donc tu es Roi!» Jésus répondit: «Tu le dis, je suis Roi. Voici pourquoi je suis né, voici pourquoi je suis venu dans le monde: pour rendre témoignage à la vérité. Quiconque est de la vérité écoute ma voix.» —
Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 «Qu'est-ce que la vérité?» lui dit Pilate. Sur ce mot, il revint dehors vers les Juifs et leur dit: «Moi, je ne trouve en lui aucune matière à condamnation.
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 Il est d'usage que je vous délivre quelqu'un à la fête de Pâque, voulez-vous que je vous délivre le «Roi des Juifs?»
But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 Ils recommencèrent à crier: «Pas celui-là, disaient-ils, mais Bar-Abbas.» Ce Bar-Abbas était un brigand.
Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
