1 Mes frères, point d'acception de personnes en la foi de notre Seigneur Jésus, le Christ de gloire.
My friends, are you really trying to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with discrimination?
2 Si, par exemple, il entre dans votre synagogue un homme ayant un anneau d'or au doigt et revêtu d'habits brillants, et qu'il y entre aussi un pauvre aux vêtements sordides,
Suppose a visitor should enter your synagogue, with gold rings and in grand clothes, and suppose a poor man should come in also, in shabby clothes,
3 et que vous regardiez celui qui porte de brillants habits et lui disiez — «Toi, assieds-toi ici à cette place d'honneur»; — et que vous disiez au pauvre: — «Toi, reste là debout»; — ou bien: «Assieds-toi plus bas que mon marchepied»; —
and you show more respect to the visitor who is wearing grand clothes, and say – ‘There is a good seat for you here,’ but to the poor man – ‘You must stand; or sit down there by my footstool,’
4 n'est-ce pas là faire des distinctions entre frères et vous établir juges dans de mauvais sentiments?
Haven’t you made distinctions among yourselves, and used evil standards of judgement?
5 Écoutez, mes frères bien-aimés: Dieu n'a-t-il pas choisi ceux que le monde appelle: «les pauvres», pour les faire riches en foi et héritiers du Royaume qu'il a promis à ceux qu'il aime?
Listen, my dear friends. Has not God chosen those who are poor in the things of this world to be rich through their faith, and to possess the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?
6 Et puis, vous faites affront au pauvre! Ne sont-ce pas les riches qui, vous tyrannisent et qui vous traînent devant les tribunaux?
But you – you insult the poor man! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you? Isn’t it they who drag you into law courts?
7 Ne sont-ce pas eux qui blasphèment le beau nom qu'on prononce en vous nommant?
Isn’t it they who malign that honourable name spoken over you at your baptism?
8 Sans doute, si vous accomplissez la Loi royale que nous donne l'Écriture: «Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même», vous faites bien,
If you keep the royal law which runs – “You must love your neighbour as you love yourself,” you are doing right;
9 mais si vous faites acception de personnes, vous commettez un péché, et la Loi vous condamne et vous déclare transgresseurs!
but, if you discriminate, you commit a sin, and stand convicted by that same law of being offenders against it.
10 En effet, quelqu'un qui a observé la Loi tout entière (sauf un commandement pour lequel il a failli) est coupable comme s'il les avait tous violés.
For a person who has laid the Law, as a whole, to heart, but has failed in one particular, is accountable for breaking all its provisions.
11 Car celui qui a dit: «Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère» a dit aussi: «Tu ne commettras pas de meurtre» et alors si tu ne commets pas d'adultère, mais que tu commettes un meurtre, tu deviens transgresseur de la Loi.
He who said “You must not commit adultery” also said “You must not murder.” If, then, you commit murder but not adultery, you are still an offender against the Law.
12 Parlez et agissez comme devant être jugés par une Loi de liberté.
Therefore, speak and act as people who are to be judged by the “Law of freedom.”
13 Le jugement est sans miséricorde pour celui qui n'a pas fait miséricorde. La miséricorde n'a rien à craindre du jugement.
For there will be justice without mercy for the person who has not acted mercifully. Mercy triumphs over Justice.
14 Mes frères, à quoi sert-il à quelqu'un de dire: «j'ai la foi», s'il n'a pas les oeuvres. La foi peut-elle le sauver?
My friends, what good is it if someone claims that they have faith, but they do not prove it by actions? Can such faith save them?
15 Je suppose qu'un frère ou une soeur se trouve dans le dénuement et qu'il leur manque le pain quotidien,
Suppose some brother or sister should be in need of clothes and of daily bread,
16 et voici l'un de vous qui leur dit: — «Allez en paix, chauffez-vous, rassasiez-vous» — et cela sans leur donner ce qu'il leur faut pour vivre, à quoi cela sert-il?
and one of you says to them – ‘Go, and peace be with you; keep warm and eat well!’ and yet you do not actually give them the necessities of life, what good would it be to them?
17 Eh bien, il en est de même de la foi, si elle n'a pas d'oeuvres, elle est morte en soi.
In just the same way faith, if not followed by actions, is, by itself, a lifeless thing.
18 Cependant on pourrait dire: — «Toi, tu as la foi»; — moi, j'ai aussi des oeuvres; montre-moi ta foi sans les oeuvres; quant à moi, c'est par mes oeuvres que je montrerai ma foi!
Someone, indeed, may say – ‘You are a man of faith, and I am a man of action.’ ‘Then show me your faith,’ I reply, ‘apart from any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions.’
19 Tu as la foi en un Dieu unique? tu as raison; eh bien, les démons ont aussi cette foi-là, et cependant ils tremblent.
It is a part of your faith, is it not, that there is one God? Good; yet even the demons have that faith, and tremble at the thought.
20 Veux-tu comprendre, ô homme creux, que la foi sans les oeuvres est stérile?
Now do you really want to understand, fool, how it is that faith without actions leads to nothing?
21 N'est-ce pas pour des oeuvres qu'Abraham notre Père fut déclaré juste, lorsqu'il offrit sur l'autel son fils Isaac?
Look at our ancestor, Abraham. Was he not justified by his actions after he had offered his son, Isaac, on the altar?
22 Tu vois que la foi et les oeuvres agissaient chez lui de concert, et que les oeuvres ont porté la foi à sa perfection.
You see how, in his case, faith and actions went together; that his faith was perfected as the result of his actions;
23 C'est ainsi que s'est accomplie l'Écriture qui dit: «Abraham eut foi en Dieu et cela lui fut compté pour justice», et il reçut le nom d'ami de Dieu.
and that in this way the words of scripture came true – ‘Abraham believed God, and that was regarded by God as righteousness,’ and ‘He was called the friend of God.’
24 Vous voyez bien qu'un homme est considéré comme juste pour des oeuvres et non pas seulement pour sa foi.
You see, then, that a person is justified by actions, and not by faith alone.
25 De même encore est-ce que Rahab, la femme de mauvaise vie, n'a pas été considérée comme juste pour des oeuvres, quand elle a donné asile aux messagers et les a fait partir par un autre chemin?
Wasn’t it the same with the prostitute, Rahab? Was she not justified by her actions, after she had welcomed the messengers and helped them escape by another road?
26 De même que le corps sans esprit est mort, de même la foi sans oeuvres est morte.
Just as a body is dead without a spirit, so faith is dead without actions.
