Actes 23
1 Paul, regardant en face le Sanhédrin, dit: «Frères, «C'est en toute bonne conscience que je me suis conduit devant Dieu jusqu'à aujourd'hui...»
And Paul, looking fixedly at the Sanhedrin, said, My brothers, my life has been upright before God till this day.
2 Le grand-prêtre Hananias ordonna alors aux assistants de souffleter Paul sur la bouche.
And the high priest, Ananias, gave orders to those who were near him to give him a blow on the mouth.
3 «Dieu te frappera à ton tour, muraille blanchie!» répondit Paul en se tournant vers lui, «tu sièges pour me juger selon la Loi, et c'est au mépris de la Loi que tu ordonnes de me frapper!»
Then Paul said to him, God will give blows to you, you whitewashed wall: are you here to be my judge by law, and by your orders am I given blows against the law?
4 — «Quoi! tu injuries le grand-prêtre de Dieu!» dirent les assistants.
And those who were near said, Do you say such words against God's high priest?
5 Mais Paul: «Je ne savais pas, frères, que ce fût le grand-prêtre, car il est écrit: «Tu n'insulteras pas le chef de ton peuple.»
And Paul said, Brother, I had no idea that he was the high priest: for it has been said, You may not say evil about the ruler of your people.
6 Paul, sachant que l'assemblée était composée en partie de Sadducéens, en partie de Pharisiens, s'écria en plein Sanhédrin: «Frères, je suis Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens, c'est pour mon espérance, c'est pour la résurrection des morts qu'on me met en jugement!»
But when Paul saw that half of them were Sadducees and the rest Pharisees, he said in the Sanhedrin, Brothers, I am a Pharisee, and the son of Pharisees: I am here to be judged on the question of the hope of the coming back from the dead.
7 Ces paroles provoquèrent une scission entre les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens et l'assemblée se divisa.
And when he had said this, there was an argument between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and a division in the meeting.
8 En effet, les Sadducéens nient la résurrection, l'existence des anges et des Esprits; les Pharisiens admettent tout cela.
For the Sadducees say that there is no coming back from the dead, and no angels or spirits: but the Pharisees have belief in all these.
9 Il s'ensuivit une discussion tumultueuse; certains Scribes du parti pharisien se levèrent, prirent la défense de Paul et dirent: «Nous ne trouvons rien à reprocher à cet homme... Si un Esprit lui a parlé! un ange, peut-être!»...
And there was a great outcry: and some of the scribes on the side of the Pharisees got up and took part in the discussion, saying, We see no evil in this man: what if he has had a revelation from an angel or a spirit?
10 La dispute s'envenimait, et le tribun craignait que Paul ne fût mis en pièces; il donna ordre à une escouade de soldats de descendre dans la salle, d'arracher Paul de leurs mains et de le reconduire à la Forteresse.
And when the argument became very violent, the chief captain, fearing that Paul would be pulled in two by them, gave orders to the armed men to take him by force from among them, and take him into the army building.
11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur lui apparut et lui dit: «Courage! comme tu as été mon témoin à Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu sois mon témoin à Rome!»
And the night after, the Lord came to his side and said, Be of good heart, for as you have been witnessing for me in Jerusalem, so will you be my witness in Rome.
12 Le lendemain matin, les Juifs formèrent entre eux un complot et s'obligèrent par voeu à ne manger ni boire tant qu'ils n'auraient pas tué Paul.
And when it was day, the Jews came together and put themselves under an oath that they would take no food or drink till they had put Paul to death.
13 Ils étaient plus de quarante à avoir fait cette conjuration.
And more than forty of them took this oath.
14 Ils allèrent trouver les chefs des prêtres et les Anciens et leur dirent: «Nous nous sommes obligés par voeu, sous les plus terribles anathèmes, à ne rien manger que nous n'ayons tué Paul.
And they came to the chief priests and the rulers and said, We have taken a great oath to take no food till we have put Paul to death
15 Intervenez donc, avec le Sanhédrin, auprès du tribun pour obtenir une nouvelle comparution, comme si vous vouliez étudier plus à fond son affaire. Quant à nous, nous sommes prêts; nous le tuerons dans le trajet.»
So now, will you and the Sanhedrin make a request to the military authorities to have him sent down to you, as if you were desiring to go into the business in greater detail; and we, before ever he gets to you, will be waiting to put him to death.
16 Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul entendit parler de ce guet-apens, se rendit à la Forteresse, y entra et révéla tout à Paul.
But Paul's sister's son had word of their design, and he came into the army building and gave news of it to Paul.
17 Celui-ci fit alors appeler un des centurions: «Mène ce jeune homme au tribun, lui dit-il, il a quelque chose à lui communiquer.
And Paul sent for a captain and said, Take this young man to your chief, for he has news for him.
18 Le centurion l'emmena donc chez le tribun et lui dit: «Le prisonnier Paul m'a fait appeler et m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire.»
So he took him to the chief captain and said, Paul, the prisoner, made a request to me to take this young man to you, for he has something to say to you.
19 Le tribun prit le jeune homme par la main, le conduisit à l'écart et lui demanda: «Qu'as-tu à me communiquer?»
And the chief took him by the hand and, going on one side, said to him privately, What is it you have to say to me?
20 — «Les Juifs, répondit-il, sont convenus de te prier de faire comparaître Paul demain devant le Sanhédrin, comme s'ils voulaient étudier plus à fond son affaire.
And he said, The Jews are in agreement together to make a request to you for Paul to be taken, on the day after this, into the Sanhedrin, to be questioned in greater detail.
21 Garde-toi de le faire; c'est un guet-apens; ils sont plus de quarante qui se sont obligés par voeu à ne manger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué. Ils sont tout prêts; ils n'attendent que ton consentement.»
But do not give way to them, for more than forty of them are waiting for him, having taken an oath not to take food or drink till they have put him to death: and now they are ready, waiting for your order.
22 Le tribun renvoya le jeune homme en lui défendant de parler à personne de ce qu'il venait de lui apprendre.
So the chief captain let the young man go, saying to him, Do not say to anyone that you have given me word of these things.
23 Puis il fit appeler deux centurions: «Tenez prêts, leur dit-il, à partir de la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats, soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents hommes du train pour aller jusqu'à Césarée.»
And he sent for two captains and said, Make ready two hundred men, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen, to go to Caesarea, at the third hour of the night:
24 Il commanda aussi de se pourvoir de montures pour Paul, afin de le mener sain et sauf au procurateur Félix.
And get beasts so that they may put Paul on them, and take him safely to Felix, the ruler.
25 En même temps il écrivit à celui-ci une lettre, dont voici la teneur:
And he sent a letter in these words:
26 «Claudius Lysias à son excellence le procurateur Félix. Salut.
Claudius Lysias, to the most noble ruler, Felix, peace be with you.
27 «Cet homme a été arrêté par les Juifs, et ils allaient le tuer, quand j'arrivai avec la troupe et le leur enlevai; j'avais appris qu'il était citoyen romain.
This man was taken by the Jews, and was about to be put to death by them, when I came on them with the army and took him out of danger, having knowledge that he was a Roman.
28 Voulant connaître le motif de leurs accusations, je le conduisis au Sanhédrin;
And, desiring to get at the reason for their attack on him, I took him down to their Sanhedrin:
29 voici ce que je trouvai: des poursuites sur des questions relatives à leur Loi et aucun grief qui méritât la mort ou la prison.
Then it became clear to me that it was a question of their law, and that nothing was said against him which might be a reason for prison or death.
30 Mais on m'a dénoncé un complot contre cet homme; je te l'ai donc envoyé sans retard et j'ai prévenu les accusateurs qu'ils eussent aussi à prendre la parole contre lui devant toi.»
And when news was given to me that a secret design was being made against the man, I sent him straight away to you, giving orders to those who are against him to make their statements before you.
31 Les soldats exécutèrent ces ordres; ils prirent Paul et le conduisirent de nuit jusqu'à Antipatris.
So the armed men, as they were ordered, took Paul and came by night to Antipatris.
32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers continuer le chemin avec lui et rentrèrent à la Forteresse.
But on the day after, they sent the horsemen on with him, and went back to their place:
33 Ceux-là, arrivés à Césarée, remirent la lettre au procurateur et lui présentèrent Paul.
And they, when they came to Caesarea, gave the letter to the ruler, and took Paul before him.
34 Il la lut et s'informa de quel pays il était. Apprenant qu'il était de Cilicie:
And after reading it, he said, What part of the country do you come from? And, hearing that he was from Cilicia,
35 «Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront arrivés.» Puis il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d'Hérode.
I will give hearing to your cause, he said, when those who are against you have come. And he gave orders for him to be kept in Herod's Praetorium.
