Proverbes 1
1 Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d'Israël,
The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
2 pour connaître la sagesse et la discipline, pour acquérir le sens des paroles de sens,
To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
3 pour recevoir les leçons de la prudence, de l'équité et de la justice et de la droiture,
To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
4 pour donner la raison aux simples, et au jeune homme la connaissance et la pensée.
To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
5 Que le sage écoute, et il augmentera sa conception, et l'expert gagnera de prudents conseils,
A wise [man] will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
6 pour comprendre les sentences et les discours voilés, les propos des sages et leurs énigmes.
To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
7 La crainte de l'Éternel est le principe de la connaissance, les insensés méprisent la sagesse et la discipline.
The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8 Ecoute, mon fils, la leçon de ton père, et ne néglige point la remontrance de ta mère!
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
9 Car elles sont à ta tête une couronne gracieuse, et des joyaux à ton col.
For they [shall be] an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
10 Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent t'entraîner, n'y donne pas ton consentement!
My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
11 S'ils disent: « Viens avec nous, épions le sang, dressons des pièges à l'innocent, qui l'est en vain;
If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
12 engloutissons-les, comme les Enfers font des vivants, les innocents, comme ceux qui descendent dans la fosse; (Sheol h7585)
Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: (Sheol h7585)
13 nous gagnerons tous les trésors de prix, nous remplirons nos maisons de dépouilles
We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
14 tu tireras au sort ton lot avec nous, nous ferons tous bourse commune, » –
Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
15 mon fils, ne fais pas route avec eux; tiens ton pied loin de leur voie!
My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
16 Car leurs pieds courent à ce qui est mal. ils se hâtent pour aller répandre le sang.
For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
17 Mais en vain le filet se déploie aux yeux de l'oiseau:
Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18 eux, c'est leur propre sang qu'ils épient, et c'est à leur vie même qu'ils dressent des pièges.
And they lay wait for their [own] blood; they lurk privily for their [own] lives.
19 Tel est le chemin de tous les hommes avides du gain, lequel ôte la vie à celui qui l'obtient.
So [are] the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; [which] taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
20 La sagesse crie dans les rues, et sur les places fait entendre sa voix;
Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
21 à l'angle des rues bruyantes elle fait son appel; à l'avenue des Portes, dans la ville, elle dit ces mots:
She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, [saying],
22 « Jusques à quand, faibles, aimerez-vous la faiblesse, et les moqueurs se plairont-ils dans la moquerie, et les présomptueux haïront-ils la connaissance?
How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23 Revenez à ma discipline! Voici, je verserai sur vous mon esprit, et vous ferai connaître mes paroles.
Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24 Or, puisque j'appelai, et que vous fûtes rénitents, que j'étendis la main, et que nul n'y prit garde,
Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25 et que vous avez dédaigné tous mes conseils, et n'avez point aimé ma discipline;
But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 à mon tour je me rirai de vos maux; je me moquerai, quand l'alarme vous surviendra,
I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 lorsque, comme l'ouragan, l'alarme vous surviendra et que votre ruine s'avancera comme la tempête; lorsque vous surviendront la détresse et l'angoisse.
When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28 Alors ils m'invoqueront, mais je ne répondrai pas, ils me chercheront, mais ne me trouveront pas.
Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29 Parce qu'ils ont haï la science, et n'ont pas fait choix de la crainte de l'Éternel;
For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 qu'ils n'ont point voulu de mes conseils, et qu'ils ont méprisé toutes mes leçons;
They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 ils se repaîtront du fruit de leurs voies, et se rassasieront de leurs propres conseils.
Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 Car les faibles trouvent la mort dans leur défection, et les présomptueux, leur perte dans leur sécurité;
For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 mais qui m'écoute habitera sûrement, il sera tranquille, sans crainte de revers.
But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
