1 Après avoir dit ces choses Jésus sortit avec ses disciples pour se rendre, au delà du torrent des cèdres, en un lieu où se trouvait un jardin dans lequel il entra, lui et ses disciples.
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
2 Or Judas, qui le livrait, connaissait aussi l'endroit, parce que souvent Jésus s'y était réuni à ses disciples.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Judas donc, ayant pris la cohorte et des satellites que lui avaient donnés les grands prêtres et les pharisiens, arrive en ce lieu avec des torches, des lanternes et des armes.
Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Jésus donc, qui savait tout ce qui allait lui arriver, sortit et leur dit: « Qui cherchez-vous? »
Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 Ils lui répondirent: « Jésus le Nazoréen. » Il leur dit: « C'est moi qui suis Jésus. » Or Judas qui le livrait était aussi avec eux.
They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 Lors donc qu'il leur eut dit: « C'est moi qui le suis, » ils reculèrent en arrière et tombèrent par terre.
When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
7 Il leur demanda donc derechef: « Qui cherchez-vous? » Et ils dirent: « Jésus le Nazoréen. »
Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jésus répondit: « Je vous ai dit que c'est moi qui le suis, si donc vous me cherchez, laissez aller ceux-ci. » —
Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”
9 Afin que fût accomplie la parole qu'il avait dite: ceux que tu m'as donnés, je n'en ai perdu aucun. —
that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”
10 Simon Pierre qui avait une épée la tira donc et frappa l'esclave du grand prêtre et lui coupa l'oreille droite; or le nom de l'esclave était Malchus.
Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 Jésus dit donc à Pierre: « Remets l'épée dans le fourreau; la coupe que le Père m'a donnée, ne la boirai-je pas? »
Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”
12 La cohorte, et le commandant, et les satellites des Juifs se saisirent donc de Jésus et le garrottèrent,
So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him,
13 et ils le conduisirent d'abord chez Annas; il était en effet beau-père de Caïaphas, qui était grand prêtre cette année-là. —
and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Or Caïaphas était celui qui avait donné aux Juifs le conseil: il convient qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple. —
Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
15 Cependant Simon Pierre suivait Jésus, avec un autre disciple; or ce disciple-ci était connu du grand prêtre, et il entra avec Jésus dans la cour du grand prêtre,
Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;
16 mais Pierre se tenait dehors près de la porte. L'autre disciple, celui qui était connu du grand prêtre, sortit donc, et parla à la portière, et il fit entrer Pierre.
but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 La servante qui faisait office de portière dit donc à Pierre: « N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, des disciples de cet homme-là? » Il lui dit: « Je n'en suis point. »
Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Cependant les esclaves et les satellites se tenaient auprès d'un brasier qu'ils avaient allumé, car il faisait froid, et ils se chauffaient; or Pierre se tenait aussi avec eux et se chauffait.
Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 Le grand prêtre interrogea donc Jésus sur ses disciples et sur sa doctrine.
The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 Jésus lui répondit: « Pour moi, c'est publiquement que j'ai parlé au monde; j'ai constamment enseigné dans une synagogue et dans le temple où tous les Juifs se rassemblent, et je n'ai rien dit en cachette.
Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.
21 Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? Interroge ceux qui ont entendu ce dont je leur ai parlé; voici, ce sont eux qui savent ce que j'ai dit. »
Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things which I said.”
22 Or quand il eut dit cela, un des satellites qui se trouvait là donna un soufflet à Jésus, en disant: « C'est ainsi que tu réponds au grand prêtre! »
When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jésus lui répondit: « Si j'ai mal parlé, porte témoignage du mal que j'ai dit, mais si c'est bien, pourquoi me frappes-tu? »
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
24 Annas l'envoya donc garrotté à Caïaphas le grand prêtre.
Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
25 Cependant Simon Pierre était à se chauffer; ils lui dirent donc: « N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, de ses disciples? » Il le nia et dit: « Je n'en suis point. »
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26 Un des esclaves du grand prêtre, qui était parent de celui dont Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, dit: « Est-ce que je ne t'ai pas vu dans le jardin avec lui? »
One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
27 Pierre donc nia derechef, et aussitôt un coq chanta.
Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
28 Ils conduisent donc Jésus de chez Caïaphas au prétoire; or c'était le matin, et eux-mêmes n'entrèrent pas dans le prétoire, afin de ne pas se souiller, et de pouvoir manger la pâque.
They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29 Pilate donc sortit pour se rendre auprès d'eux et dit: « Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme? »
Pilate therefore went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30 Ils lui répliquèrent: « Si celui-ci n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré. »
They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”
31 Pilate leur dit donc: « Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et jugez-le selon votre loi. » Les Juifs lui dirent: « Il ne nous est pas permis de mettre personne à mort. » —
Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is illegal for us to put anyone to death,”
32 Afin que fût accomplie la parole par laquelle Jésus avait indiqué de quelle mort il devait mourir. —
that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
33 Pilate entra donc derechef dans le prétoire, et il appela Jésus, et lui dit: « Es-tu le roi des Juifs? »
Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jésus répondit: « Est-ce de toi-même que tu dis cela, ou bien d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi? »
Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilate répondit: « Est-ce que je suis Juif? C'est ta nation et les grands prêtres qui t'ont livré à moi; qu'as-tu fait? »
Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”
36 Jésus répondit: « Mon royaume n'est pas de ce monde; si mon royaume était de ce monde, mes satellites auraient combattu afin que je ne fusse pas livré aux Juifs; mais maintenant mon royaume n'est pas d'ici. »
Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate lui dit donc: « Tu es donc roi? » Jésus répondit: « Tu le dis; en effet je suis roi. C'est pour rendre témoignage à la vérité que je suis né et que je suis venu dans le monde; quiconque est de la vérité écoute ma voix. »
Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Pilate lui dit: « Qu'est-ce que la vérité? » Et en disant cela il sortit derechef pour se rendre auprès des Juifs, et il leur dit: « Pour moi, je ne trouve en lui aucun crime;
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 mais c'est votre coutume que je vous relâche quelqu'un à Pâque, voulez-vous donc que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs? »
But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 Ils s'écrièrent donc derechef: « Non pas celui-ci, mais Barabbas! » Or Barabbas était un brigand.
Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
