Job 14
1 L'homme né de la femme est borné dans ses jours, et rassasié d'alarmes.
Man [that is] born of a woman [is] of few days, and full of trouble.
2 Comme la fleur il pousse, et il est tranché, il fuit comme l'ombre, et n'est point permanent.
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
3 Et c'est sur lui que tu tiens tes yeux ouverts! et c'est moi que tu mènes en jugement avec toi!
And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
4 De la souillure fera-t-on naître un homme pur? Pas un.
Who can bring a clean [thing] out of an unclean? not one.
5 Si ses jours sont déterminés, si le nombre de ses mois par devers toi est marqué, si tu en fixas le terme qu'il ne franchira pas,
Seeing his days [are] determined, the number of his months [are] with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6 ne le suis plus de l'œil! pour qu'il ait du relâche, et puisse se réjouir, comme un mercenaire de sa journée!
Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
7 Pour l'arbre, en effet, il est un espoir: est-il coupé, il reverdit encore, et ne cesse pas de pousser des jets;
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 si sa racine devient caduque en terre, et que dans la poussière sa tige se meure,
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 au parfum des eaux il se ranime, et, comme un plant, il pousse des rameaux.
[Yet] through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
10 Mais quand l'homme meurt, le voilà gisant! quand le mortel expire, où est-il?
But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where [is] he?
11 L'eau s'est écoulée du lac, et la rivière tarit et se dessèche;
[As] the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
12 ainsi l'homme se couche, et il ne se relève pas; jusqu'à ce qu'il n'y ait plus de ciel, on ne se réveille pas, et l'on n'est point tiré de son sommeil.
So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens [be] no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
13 O! si dans les Enfers Tu me plongeais, me cachais, jusqu'à ce que passe ta colère, me fixant un terme pour me rendre ton souvenir! (Sheol h7585)
O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me! (Sheol h7585)
14 Une fois mort, l'homme revivrait-il?… Je patienterais durant tous mes jours de corvée, jusqu'à ce qu'on vînt me relever:
If a man die, shall he live [again]? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
15 tu appellerais, et je te répondrais… Tu languirais après l'ouvrage de tes mains!
Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
16 Mais maintenant tu comptes mes pas! N'es-tu pas aux aguets de mon péché?
For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
17 L'acte de mon crime dans le sac est scellé, et tu imagines encore, pour ajouter à ma faute!
My transgression [is] sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
18 Mais enfin la montagne éboulée gît anéantie, et le rocher se mine détaché de sa place:
And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
19 les pierres sont creusées par les eaux, dont les flots emportent la poudre de la terre. Ainsi tu as détruit l'espérance du mortel;
The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow [out] of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
20 incessamment tu l'assailles, et il s'en va; tu altères son visage, et le pousses dehors:
Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
21 ses fils sont honorés, et il n'en sait rien; ils sont dans la bassesse, et il l'ignore;
His sons come to honour, and he knoweth [it] not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth [it] not of them.
22 sa chair ne ressent que sa propre douleur, et son âme pour lui seul s'attriste.
But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
