Jérémie 4
1 Si tu reviens à moi, Israël, dit l'Éternel, tu reviendras ici; et si tu ôtes tes abominations de devant moi, tu ne seras plus errant;
If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith the LORD, return unto me: and if thou wilt put away thine abominations out of my sight, then shalt thou not remove.
2 et si tu jures par « la vie de l'Éternel, » selon la vérité, la droiture et la justice, les nations se serviront de son nom pour bénir, et se glorifieront de lui.
And thou shalt swear, The LORD liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.
3 Car ainsi parle l'Éternel aux hommes de Juda et de Jérusalem:
For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
4 Faites-vous des novales et ne semez point parmi les épines! Circoncisez-vous pour l'Éternel, et enlevez le prépuce de vos cœurs, hommes de Juda, et habitants de Jérusalem, de peur que ma colère n'éclate comme un feu, et ne consume sans que personne éteigne, à cause de la méchanceté de vos actions.
Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench [it], because of the evil of your doings.
5 Annoncez en Juda, et publiez à Jérusalem, et parlez, et sonnez de la trompette dans le pays, criez à pleine voix et dites: Rassemblez-vous, et allons dans les villes fortes!
Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defenced cities.
6 Tournez l'étendard vers Sion, fuyez, ne vous arrêtez pas! Car du nord J'amène la calamité et un grand désastre.
Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.
7 Le lion sort de son fourré, et le destructeur des peuples part, il sort de son lieu, pour faire de ton pays un désert; tes villes seront détruites, dépeuplées.
The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; [and] thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.
8 Aussi, ceignez le cilice, gémissez, et lamentez-vous, car l'ardente colère de l'Éternel ne s'éloigne pas de vous.
For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us.
9 Et dans ce jour-là, dit l'Éternel, le cœur manquera au roi et aux princes, et les sacrificateurs seront atterrés, et les prophètes seront stupéfaits.
And it shall come to pass at that day, saith the LORD, [that] the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.
10 Alors je dis: Ah! Seigneur, Éternel, en vérité tu as trompé ce peuple et Jérusalem en disant: Vous serez sains et saufs! et cependant l'épée pénètre jusqu'à son cœur.
Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.
11 Dans ce temps-là, il sera dit à ce peuple et à Jérusalem: Un vent brûlant vient des collines du désert dans la direction de la fille de mon peuple, non point pour nettoyer, ni pour émonder,
At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
12 un vent plus fort que pour cela viendra de par moi; et alors à mon tour je prononcerai ma sentence contre eux.
[Even] a full wind from those [places] shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them.
13 Voici, Il s'avance comme les nuées, et ses chars sont comme l'ouragan, et ses chevaux plus légers que les aigles. « Malheur à nous, car nous sommes dévastés! »
Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots [shall be] as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.
14 Purge de méchanceté ton cœur, Jérusalem, afin que tu sois sauvée! Jusques à quand séjourneront dans ton cœur tes pensées désastreuses?
O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?
15 Car une voix publie depuis Dan, et annonce un désastre depuis la montagne d'Éphraïm.
For a voice declareth from Dan, and publisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.
16 Annoncez-le aux nations! Voici, publiez-le dans Jérusalem: des assiégeants arrivent d'une terre lointaine, et ils poussent leur voix contre les villes de Juda.
Make ye mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, [that] watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 Comme les gardes d'un champ ils te cerneront; car elle s'est révoltée contre moi, dit l'Éternel.
As keepers of a field, are they against her round about; because she hath been rebellious against me, saith the LORD.
18 Ta conduite et tes œuvres ont attiré ces choses sur toi; c'est l'effet de ta méchanceté; oui, cela est amer, oui, cela pénètre jusqu'à ton cœur.
Thy way and thy doings have procured these [things] unto thee; this [is] thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth unto thine heart.
19 « Mes entrailles! mes entrailles! je souffre dans les cellules de mon cœur; mon cœur bouillonne, je ne puis me taire; car tu entends, mon âme, le son de la trompette, le cri de guerre.
My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.
20 Ruine sur ruine est annoncée, car tout le pays est désolé; tout à coup mes tentes sont détruites, en un instant mes pavillons.
Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, [and] my curtains in a moment.
21 Jusques à quand verrai-je l'étendard, ouïrai-je le son de la trompette? »
How long shall I see the standard, [and] hear the sound of the trumpet?
22 – « C'est que Mon peuple est en délire, il ne Me connaît pas; ce sont des fils insensés, destitués d'intelligence; ce sont des sages pour faire le mal; mais pour faire le bien, ce sont des ignorants. »
For my people [is] foolish, they have not known me; they [are] sottish children, and they have none understanding: they [are] wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.
23 Je regarde la terre, et voici, elle est déserte et vide; et les Cieux, ils n'ont plus leur lumière.
I beheld the earth, and, lo, [it was] without form, and void; and the heavens, and they [had] no light.
24 Je regarde les montagnes, et voici, elles tremblent, et toutes les collines s'ébranlent.
I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
25 Je regarde, et voici, il n'y a point d'homme, et tous les oiseaux des Cieux ont fui.
I beheld, and, lo, [there was] no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
26 Je regarde, et voici, le Carmel est un désert, et toutes ses villes sont détruites par l'Éternel et par le feu de sa colère.
I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place [was] a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, [and] by his fierce anger.
27 Car ainsi parle l'Éternel: La dévastation couvrira le pays; mais je ne la ferai pas totale.
For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
28 Pour cela le pays est en deuil, et le ciel s'obscurcit, parce que je l'ai dit, je l'ai arrêté, et je ne m'en repens point, et n'en reviendrai point.
For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken [it], I have purposed [it], and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.
29 Au bruit des cavaliers et des archers toute ville est en fuite; on gagne les forêts, et on gravit les rochers; toute ville est abandonnée, il n'y reste personne.
The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks: every city [shall be] forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
30 Et toi, ville désolée, que feras-tu? Quand même tu t'habilles de pourpre, que tu te pares d'une parure d'or, que tu bordes de fard tes yeux, en vain t'embellis-tu, les amants te dédaignent, ils en veulent à ta vie.
And [when] thou [art] spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; [thy] lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.
31 Car j'entends comme la voix d'une femme en travail, un cri d'angoisse comme au premier enfantement: c'est la voix de la fille de Sion; elle soupire, étend les bras: « C'en est fait de moi! mon âme succombe sous les meurtriers! »
For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, [and] the anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, [that] bewaileth herself, [that] spreadeth her hands, [saying], Woe [is] me now! for my soul is wearied because of murderers.
