Isaïe 47
1 Descends, et assieds-toi dans la poudre, Vierge, fille de Babel! Assieds-toi sur la terre, sans trône, fille des Chaldéens!
Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: [there is] no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.
2 Car désormais on ne t'appellera plus molle et délicate! Prends le moulin, et mouds de la farine! ôte ton voile! relève les pans de ta robe! découvre tes jambes! passe à gué les fleuves! Découvre ta nudité!
Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.
3 oui, ta nudité sera vue; je veux tirer vengeance, et ne donner de trêve à personne.
Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet [thee as] a man.
4 Notre rédempteur (l'Éternel des armées est son nom), le Saint d'Israël [le dit]:
[As for] our redeemer, the LORD of hosts [is] his name, the Holy One of Israel.
5 Assieds-toi muette, et fuis dans les ténèbres, fille des Chaldéens, car on ne t'appellera plus désormais la maîtresse des empires!
Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.
6 Je fus irrité contre mon peuple, je profanai mon héritage, et les livrai à ton bras; tu n'eus pour eux nulle pitié! sur un vieillard tu appesantis ton joug avec excès.
I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.
7 Et tu disais: « A jamais je serai maîtresse! » tu allais jusqu'à ne pas réfléchir à ces choses, et à ne point considérer la fin.
And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: [so] that thou didst not lay these [things] to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.
8 Et maintenant, entends-le, voluptueuse, sur ton trône pleine de sécurité, qui dis en ton cœur: « Moi et nulle autre que moi! je ne serai point dans le veuvage, et je n'éprouverai point la privation d'enfants. »
Therefore hear now this, [thou that art] given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me; I shall not sit [as] a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
9 Eh bien! l'un et l'autre t'arrivera soudain le même jour, la privation d'enfants et le veuvage, ils t'arriveront complets, malgré le nombre de tes enchantements et la multitude excessive de tes charmes.
But these two [things] shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, [and] for the great abundance of thine enchantments.
10 Tu te fiais en ta malice, tu disais: « Personne ne me voit! » Ta sagesse et ta prudence! ce sont elles qui t'égarent; et tu dis dans ton cœur: « Moi et nulle autre que moi! »
For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I [am], and none else beside me.
11 Aussi t'arrivera-t-il un malheur que tu ne sauras conjurer, et une calamité fondra sur toi que tu ne pourras expier, et la ruine fondra sur toi soudain, avant que tu t'en doutes.
Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, [which] thou shalt not know.
12 Poursuis donc tes conjurations, et tes nombreux enchantements dont tu t'es occupée depuis ta jeunesse! peut-être pourras-tu trouver des ressources, peut-être inspirer la terreur!
Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
13 Tu es fatiguée du nombre de tes consultations! qu'ils se lèvent donc pour te secourir, ceux qui découpent le ciel en régions, qui inspectent les astres, indiquent aux nouvelles lunes ce qui doit t'arriver.
Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from [these things] that shall come upon thee.
14 Voici, ils sont comme le chaume; le feu les brûle, ils ne sauveront pas leur vie des flammes: il n'en restera pas un charbon pour se chauffer, ni un feu pour s'asseoir auprès.
Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: [there shall] not [be] a coal to warm at, [nor] fire to sit before it.
15 Tels seront pour toi ceux envers qui tu te donnes tant de peine, ceux avec qui tu eus affaire dès ta jeunesse, ils s'égarent chacun de son côté, et personne ne te sauve.
Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, [even] thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
