Genèse 50
1 Alors Joseph se jeta sur le visage de son père, et penché sur lui il pleura et l'embrassa.
Joseph fell on his father’s face, wept on him, and kissed him.
2 Et Joseph ordonna à ses serviteurs, les médecins, d'embaumer son père. Et les médecins embaumèrent Israël.
Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3 Et quarante jours y furent employés car c'est le nombre de jours qu'on emploie pour embaumer.
Forty days were used for him, for that is how many days it takes to embalm. The Egyptians wept for Israel for seventy days.
4 Et les Egyptiens le pleurèrent soixante-dix jours. Et quand les jours où on le pleura, furent passés, Joseph s'adressa à la maison de Pharaon en ces termes: Si j'ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, veuillez redire aux oreilles de Pharaon ces paroles:
When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh’s staff, saying, “If now I have found favour in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
5 Mon père m'a adjuré et m'a dit: Voici, je me meurs; c'est dans mon tombeau que je me suis acheté au pays de Canaan, que tu me donneras la sépulture Permets-moi donc d'aller donner la sépulture à mon père, après quoi je reviendrai.
‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.’”
6 Et Pharaon dit: Va donner la sépulture à ton père selon le serment qu'il t'a fait prêter.
Pharaoh said, “Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear.”
7 Alors Joseph partit pour la sépulture de son père et il fut accompagné par tous les serviteurs de Pharaon, les Anciens de sa maison et tous les Anciens du pays d'Égypte,
Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8 et par toute la maison de Joseph et par ses frères et la maison de son père; et ce ne fut que leurs enfants et leurs brebis et leurs bestiaux qu'ils laissèrent dans la contrée de Gosen,
all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.
9 et il avait une escorte de chars et de cavaliers, de sorte que la caravane était très considérable.
Both chariots and horsemen went up with him. It was a very great company.
10 Et arrivés à l'aire d'Atad située au-delà du Jourdain, ils y firent une très grande et très plaintive lamentation funèbre, et il célébra en l'honneur de son père un deuil de sept jours.
They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and severe lamentation. He mourned for his father seven days.
11 Et les habitants du pays, les Cananéens, témoins de la lamentation près de l'aire d'Atad, dirent: C'est un grand deuil des Egyptiens. C'est pourquoi on a donné à l'aire située au-delà du Jourdain le nom de Abel-Mistraim (deuil des Egyptiens).
When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
12 Et les fils de Jacob exécutèrent à son égard les ordres qu'il leur avait donnés.
His sons did to him just as he commanded them,
13 Et ses fils le transportèrent au pays de Canaan, et lui donnèrent la sépulture dans la grotte du champ de Macpéla, qu'Abraham avait achetée avec le champ comme propriété sépulcrale, de Ephron, le Héthien, à l'orient de Mamré.
for his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, as a possession for a burial site, from Ephron the Hittite, near Mamre.
14 Et Joseph regagna l'Égypte, lui et ses frères et tous ceux qui l'avaient accompagné aux funérailles de son père après qu'il eut donné la sépulture à son père.
Joseph returned into Egypt—he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.
15 Et les frères de Joseph voyant leur père mort se dirent: Et si Joseph conservait de la haine contre nous et nous rendait tout le mal que nous lui avons fait?
When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully pay us back for all the evil which we did to him.”
16 Et ils firent faire à Joseph ce message: Ton père avant de mourir nous a donné cet ordre:
They sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded before he died, saying,
17 Ainsi vous parlerez à Joseph: Oh! pardonne le crime de tes frères, et le péché qu'ils ont commis en te faisant du mal! A présent pardonne donc le péché des serviteurs du Dieu de ton père! Et Joseph pleura à l'ouïe de leur message.
‘You shall tell Joseph, “Now please forgive the disobedience of your brothers, and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ Now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
18 Et ses frères vinrent eux-mêmes et se prosternèrent devant lui et dirent: Voici, nous sommes tes esclaves.
His brothers also went and fell down before his face; and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
19 Alors Joseph leur dit: Soyez sans crainte! Usurperais-je la place de Dieu?
Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for am I in the place of God?
20 Vous aviez pensé à me faire du mal, mais Dieu a pensé à opérer du bien, afin d'exécuter ce qui arrive aujourd'hui, de sauver la vie à un peuple nombreux.
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to save many people alive, as is happening today.
21 Soyez donc sans crainte, je vous entretiendrai vous et vos enfants. Et il les consola et parla à leur cœur.
Now therefore don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” He comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.
22 Ainsi Joseph demeura en Égypte, lui et la maison de son père, et Joseph vécut cent-dix ans.
Joseph lived in Egypt, he, and his father’s house. Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.
23 Et Joseph vit les fils d'Ephraïm jusqu'à la troisième génération, et les fils de Machir, fils de Manassé, furent aussi reçus à leur naissance sur les genoux de Joseph.
Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees.
24 Et Joseph dit à ses frères: Je vais mourir et Dieu prendra soin de vous, et vous fera remonter de ce pays-ci au pays qu'il a promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob.
Joseph said to his brothers, “I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
25 Et Joseph fit prêter ce serment aux fils d'Israël: Quand Dieu vous visitera, vous emmènerez mes os d'ici.
Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”
26 Et Joseph mourut âgé de cent-dix ans, et ils l'embaumèrent, et on le mit dans un cercueil en Égypte.
So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
