Genèse 35

1 Et Dieu dit à Jacob: Lève-toi, monte à Béthel et y demeure et fais-y un autel au Dieu qui t'est apparu quand tu fuyais devant Esaü, ton frère.

And God said to Jacob, Arise, go up to the place, Baethel, and dwell there; and make there an altar to the God that appeared to thee, when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

2 Alors Jacob dit à sa maison a et à tous ceux qui étaient avec lui: Éloignez les dieux étrangers qui sont parmi vous, et purifiez-vous et changez vos habits,

And Jacob said to his house, and to all that were with him, Remove the strange gods that are with you from the midst of you, and purify yourselves, and change your clothes.

3 puis nous partirons et monterons à Béthel, et là je ferai un autel au Dieu qui m'a exaucé au jour de ma détresse et a été avec moi durant le voyage que j'ai accompli.

And let us rise and go up to Baethel, and let us there make an alter to God who hearkened to me in the day of calamity, who was with me, and preserved me throughout in the journey, by which I went.

4 Alors ils livrèrent à Jacob tous les dieux étrangers qu'ils retenaient, et les boucles qui étaient à leurs oreilles, et Jacob les enfouit sous le chêne qui se trouvait près de Sichem.

And they gave to Jacob the strange gods, which were in their hands, and the ear-rings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the turpentine tree which is in Secima, and destroyed them to this day.

5 Et ils se mirent en marche. Et la terreur de Dieu gagna toutes les villes de leurs alentours, tellement qu'on ne poursuivit point les fils de Jacob.

So Israel departed from Secima, and the fear of God was upon the cities round about them, and they did not pursue after the children of Israel.

6 Et Jacob parvint à Luz, situé dans le pays de Canaan (c'est Béthel) lui et tout le monde qui était avec lui.

And Jacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, which is Baethel, he and all the people that were with him.

7 Et là il édifia un autel et donna à l'endroit le nom de [Autel] du Dieu de Béthel, parce que c'était là que Dieu s'était révélé à lui, quand il fuyait devant son frère.

And he built there an altar, and called the name of the place Baethel; for there God appeared to him, when he fled from the face of his brother Esau.

8 Et alors mourut Debora, nourrice de Rebecca, et elle reçut la sépulture au-dessous de Béthel sous le chêne, auquel il donna le nom de Allon-Bachuth (chêne des pleurs).

And Deborrha, Rebecca's nurse, died, and was buried below Baethel under the oak; and Jacob called its name, The Oak of Mourning.

9 Et Dieu apparut encore à Jacob après son retour de Mésopotamie, et le bénit.

And God appeared to Jacob once more in Luza, when he came out of Mesopotamia of Syria, and God blessed him.

10 Et Dieu lui dit: Ton nom est Jacob; désormais ton nom ne sera plus Jacob, mais Israël sera ton nom. Et Il lui donna le nom d'Israël.

And God said to him, Thy name shall not be called Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name; and he called his name Israel.

11 Et Dieu lui dit: Je suis Dieu, le Tout-Puissant. Sois fécond et te multiplie; un peuple et une masse de peuples naîtront de toi et des rois sortiront de tes reins.

And God said to him, I am thy God; increase and multiply; for nations and gatherings of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins.

12 Et le pays que j'ai donné à Abraham et à Isaac, je veux te le donner et le donner à ta postérité après toi.

And the land which I gave to Abraam and Isaac, I have given it to thee; and it shall come to pass that I will give this land also to thy seed after thee.

13 Et Dieu remontant le quitta au lieu où Il avait parlé avec lui.

And God went up from him from the place where he spoke with him.

14 Alors Jacob érigea un monument dans le lieu où Il avait parlé avec lui, un monument en pierre et y fit une libation et y versa de l'huile.

And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God spoke with him, [even] a pillar of stone; and offered a libation upon it, and poured oil upon it.

15 Et Jacob donna au lieu où Dieu avait parlé avec lui le nom de Beth-El (maison de Dieu).

And Jacob called the name of the place in which God spoke with him, Baethel.

16 Et ils partirent de Béthel. Et on avait encore à franchir une traite jusqu'à Ephrata, lorsque Rachel enfanta, et elle eut un enfantement laborieux.

[[And Jacob removed from Baethel, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Gader, ]] and it came to pass when he drew nigh to Chabratha, to enter into Ephratha, Rachel travailed; and in her travail she was in hard labour.

17 Et comme l'enfantement était laborieux, la sage-femme lui dit: Ne t'alarme pas, car c'est encore un fils qui te vient!

And it came to pass in her hard labour, that the midwife said to her, Be of good courage, for thou shalt also have this son.

18 Et lorsque rendant l'âme, elle se mourait, elle nomma son nom Ben-Oni (mon fils de douleur); mais son père l'appela Benjamin (fils de la droite).

And it came to pass in her giving up the ghost (for she was dying), that she called his name, The son of my pain; but his father called his name Benjamin.

19 Ainsi mourut Rachel, et elle reçut la sépulture sur le chemin d'Ephrata, qui est Bethléhem.

So Rachel died, and was buried in the way of the course of Ephratha, this is Bethleem.

20 Et Jacob érigea un cippe sur son tombeau, c'est le cippe de Rachel qu'on voit encore aujourd'hui.

And Jacob set up a pillar on her tomb; this is the pillar on the tomb of Rachel, until this day.

21 Et Israël partit et dressa sa tente au-delà de la Tour-aux-Troupeaux.

And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Ruben went and lay with Balla, the concubine of his father Jacob; and Israel heard, and the thing appeared grievous before him.

22 Et pendant qu'Israël habitait cette contrée, Ruben prit son chemin, et coucha avec Bilha, concubine de son père. El Israël l'apprit. Et les fils de Jacob étaient au nombre de douze.

And the sons of Jacob were twelve.

23 Fils de Léa: le premier-né de Jacob, Ruben, et Siméon et Lévi, et Juda et Issaschar et Zabulon.

The sons of Lea, the first-born of Jacob; Ruben, Symeon, Levi, Judas, Issachar, Zabulon.

24 Fils de Rachel: Joseph et Benjamin.

And the sons of Rachel; Joseph and Benjamin.

25 Fils de Bilha, servante de Rachel: Dan et Nephthali.

And the sons of Balla, the hand-maid of Rachel; Dan and Nephthalim.

26 Fils de Zilpa, servante de Léa: Gad et Asser. Tels sont les fils de Jacob, qui lui naquirent en Mésopotamie.

And the sons of Zelpha, the hand-maid of Lea; Gad and Aser. These [are] the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.

27 Et Jacob arriva chez Isaac, son père, à Mamré, Kiriath-Arba, qui est Hébron, où Abraham et Isaac avaient séjourné.

And Jacob came to Isaac his father to Mambre, to a city of the plain; this is Chebron in the land of Chanaan, where Abraam and Isaac sojourned.

28 Et les jours d'Isaac furent cent quatre-vingts ans;

And the days of Isaac which he lived were an hundred and eighty years.

29 alors Isaac expira et mourut, et il fut recueilli auprès de son peuple, vieux et rassasié de jours. Et Esaü et Jacob, ses fils, lui donnèrent la sépulture.

And Isaac gave up the ghost and died, and was laid to his family, old and full of days; and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
