Genèse 31

1 Et il entendit les propos des fils de Laban qui disaient: Jacob s'est emparé de tout ce qui était à notre père, et c'est de ce qui était à notre père qu'il a formé toute cette opulence.

And he heareth the words of Laban's sons, saying, 'Jacob hath taken all that our father hath; yea, from that which our father hath, he hath made all this honour;'

2 Et Jacob remarqua l'air de Laban, et voici, il n'était plus envers lui comme ci-devant.

and Jacob seeth the face of Laban, and lo, it is not with him as heretofore.

3 Et l'Éternel dit à Jacob: Retourne au pays de tes pères et au lieu de ta naissance, et je serai avec toi.

And Jehovah saith unto Jacob, 'Turn back unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred, and I am with thee.'

4 Alors Jacob dépêcha auprès de Rachel et de Léa pour les faire venir aux champs vers son troupeau.

And Jacob sendeth and calleth for Rachel and for Leah to the field unto his flock;

5 Et il leur dit: Je vois que votre père n'a plus pour moi le même air que ci-devant; mais le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi.

and saith to them, 'I am beholding your father's face — that it is not towards me as heretofore, and the God of my father hath been with me,

6 Vous-mêmes vous savez que j'ai servi votre père de tout mon pouvoir,

and ye — ye have known that with all my power I have served your father,

7 mais votre père m'a trompé et a changé mon salaire dix fois, mais Dieu ne lui a pas permis de me nuire.

and your father hath played upon me, and hath changed my hire ten times; and God hath not suffered him to do evil with me.

8 Quand il parlait ainsi: Tu auras pour ton salaire les tachetées, toutes les brebis mettaient bas des agneaux tachetés; et quand il disait: Tu auras pour salaire les bigarrées, tout le troupeau mettait bas des portées bigarrées.

'If he say thus: The speckled are thy hire, then bare all the flock speckled ones; and if he say thus: The ring-streaked are thy hire, then bare all the flock ring-streaked;

9 C'est ainsi que Dieu a retiré le troupeau de votre père et me l'a donné.

and God taketh away the substance of your father, and doth give to me.

10 Et il arriva à l'époque de l'accouplement des brebis que je levai les yeux, et eus une vue en songe; et voilà que les béliers qui saillissaient les brebis, étaient bigarrés, tachetés et marquetés.

'And it cometh to pass at the time of the flock conceiving, that I lift up mine eyes and see in a dream, and lo, the he-goats, which are going up on the flock, [are] ring-streaked, speckled, and grisled;

11 Et l'ange de Dieu me dit dans le songe: Jacob! Et je dis: Me voici.

and the messenger of God saith unto me in the dream, Jacob, and I say, Here [am] I.

12 Et il dit: Lève donc les yeux et regarde! tous les béliers qui saillissent les brebis, sont bigarrés, tachetés et marquetés; car j'ai vu tout ce que te fait Laban.

'And He saith, Lift up, I pray thee, thine eyes, and see — all the he-goats which are going up on the flock [are] ring-streaked, speckled, and grisled, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to thee;

13 Je suis le Dieu de Beth-El où tu as oint un monument et où tu m'as fait un vœu. Or lève-toi, quitte ce pays, et retourne au pays de ta naissance.

I [am] the God of Bethel where thou hast anointed a standing pillar, where thou hast vowed a vow to me; now, arise, go out from this land, and turn back unto the land of thy birth.'

14 Alors Rachel et Léa répondirent et lui dirent: Avons-nous encore une part et un héritage dans la maison de notre père?

And Rachel answereth — Leah also — and saith to him, 'Have we yet a portion and inheritance in the house of our father?

15 N'avons-nous pas été regardées par lui comme des étrangères? car il nous a vendues, et a aussi mangé l'argent payé pour nous.

have we not been reckoned strangers to him? for he hath sold us, and he also utterly consumeth our money;

16 Toute la richesse que Dieu a retirée à notre père, est à nous et à nos enfants: dès lors fais tout ce que Dieu t'a dit.

for all the wealth which God hath taken away from our father, it [is] ours, and our children's; and now, all that God hath said unto thee — do.'

17 Sur quoi Jacob se mit en devoir et fit monter ses fils et ses femmes sur les chameaux

And Jacob riseth, and lifteth up his sons and his wives on the camels,

18 et emmena tout son bétail et tous ses biens qu'il avait acquis, le bétail qui était sa propriété acquise en Mésopotamie, pour venir joindre son père Isaac au pays de Canaan.

and leadeth all his cattle, and all his substance which he hath acquired, the cattle of his getting, which he hath acquired in Padan-Aram, to go unto Isaac his father, to the land of Canaan.

19 Cependant Laban était allé faire la tonte de ses brebis. Et Rachel déroba les Théraphims de son père.

And Laban hath gone to shear his flock, and Rachel stealeth the teraphim which her father hath;

20 Et Jacob trompa le cœur de Laban, l'Araméen, en ne le prévenant pas de sa fuite.

and Jacob deceiveth the heart of Laban the Aramaean, because he hath not declared to him that he is fleeing;

21 Il prit donc la fuite avec tout ce qui lui appartenait, et il se mit en route et passa le fleuve, et prit la direction de la montagne de Galaad.

and he fleeth, he and all that he hath, and riseth, and passeth over the River, and setteth his face [toward] the mount of Gilead.

22 Et le troisième jour Laban eut avis de la fuite de Jacob.

And it is told to Laban on the third day that Jacob hath fled,

23 Alors il prit ses frères avec lui, et le poursuivit sept journées de marche et il l'atteignit à la montagne de Galaad.

and he taketh his brethren with him, and pursueth after him a journey of seven days, and overtaketh him in the mount of Gilead.

24 Mais Dieu vint trouver Laban, l'Araméen, dans un songe de la nuit et lui dit: Garde-toi de rien dire à Jacob, ni en bien, ni en mal!

And God cometh in unto Laban the Aramaean in a dream of the night, and saith to him, 'Take heed to thyself lest thou speak with Jacob from good unto evil.'

25 Laban atteignit donc Jacob. Or Jacob avait dressé sa tente sur la montagne, et Laban la dressa aussi avec ses frères sur la montagne de Galaad.

And Laban overtaketh Jacob; and Jacob hath fixed his tent in the mount; and Laban with his brethren have fixed [theirs] in the mount of Gilead.

26 Alors Laban dit à Jacob: Qu'as-tu fait d'avoir trompé mon cœur et emmené mes filles comme des captives prises avec l'épée?

And Laban saith to Jacob, 'What hast thou done that thou dost deceive my heart, and lead away my daughters as captives of the sword?

27 Pourquoi fuir clandestinement, et me tromper et ne pas m'informer? et je t'aurais accompagné joyeusement, au son des chants, de la cymbale et du luth.

Why hast thou hidden thyself to flee, and deceivest me, and hast not declared to me, and I send thee away with joy and with songs, with tabret and with harp,

28 Et pourquoi ne m'as-tu pas laissé donner le baiser à mes fils et à mes filles? Dès lors tu as follement agi.

and hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? — now thou hast acted foolishly in doing [so];

29 J'ai la force en main pour vous faire du mal, mais le Dieu de votre père m'a parlé hier et m'a dit: Garde-toi de rien dire à Jacob, ni en bien, ni en mal.

my hand is to God to do evil with you, but the God of your father yesternight hath spoken unto me, saying, Take heed to thyself from speaking with Jacob from good unto evil.

30 Eh bien! tu es parti parce que tu languissais après la maison de ton père; mais pourquoi m'as-tu dérobé mes dieux?

'And now, thou hast certainly gone, because thou hast been very desirous for the house of thy father; why hast thou stolen my gods?'

31 Alors Jacob répondit et dit à Laban: J'étais en crainte pensant que tu me soustrairais tes filles.

And Jacob answereth and saith to Laban, 'Because I was afraid, for I said, Lest thou take violently away thy daughters from me;

32 Mais celui chez qui tu trouveras tes dieux, ne restera pas en vie! En présence de nos frères fouille ce qui m'appartient, et reprends-les. Or Jacob ignorait que Rachel les avait dérobés.

with whomsoever thou findest thy gods — he doth not live; before our brethren discern for thyself what [is] with me, and take to thyself:' and Jacob hath not known that Rachel hath stolen them.

33 Puis Laban entra dans la tente de Jacob et dans la tente de Léa et dans la tente des deux servantes, et ne trouva rien; et il sortit de la tente de Léa et entra dans la tente de Rachel.

And Laban goeth into the tent of Jacob, and into the tent of Leah, and into the tent of the two handmaidens, and hath not found; and he goeth out from the tent of Leah, and goeth into the tent of Rachel.

34 Or Rachel avait pris les Théraphims et les avait mis dans le bât d'un chameau et s'était assise dessus. Et Laban fouilla toute la tente et ne trouva rien.

And Rachel hath taken the teraphim, and putteth them in the furniture of the camel, and sitteth upon them; and Laban feeleth all the tent, and hath not found;

35 Et elle dit à son père: Que mon seigneur ne s'irrite pas de ce que je ne puis me lever devant toi, car j'ai ce qui survient aux femmes. Et il chercha et ne trouva point les Théraphims.

and she saith unto her father, 'Let it not be displeasing in the eyes of my lord that I am not able to rise at thy presence, for the way of women [is] on me;' and he searcheth, and hath not found the teraphim.

36 Alors Jacob s'irrita et querella Laban; et prenant la parole Jacob dit à Laban: Quel est mon crime, quel est mon péché

And it is displeasing to Jacob, and he striveth with Laban; and Jacob answereth and saith to Laban, 'What [is] my transgression? what my sin, that thou hast burned after me?

37 pour que tu m'aies poursuivi, pour que tu aies fouillé tous mes bagages? Lequel de tous les meubles de ta maison as-tu trouvé? Produis-le ici devant mes frères et tes frères, et qu'ils soient arbitres entre nous deux!

for thou hast felt all my vessels: what hast thou found of all the vessels of thy house? set here before my brethren, and thy brethren, and they decide between us both.

38 Voici vingt ans que j'ai passés avec toi; tes brebis et tes chèvres n'ont point avorté, et je n'ai pas mangé les béliers de ton troupeau;

'These twenty years I [am] with thee: thy ewes and thy she-goats have not miscarried, and the rams of thy flock I have not eaten;

39 je ne t'apportais point les bêtes déchirées, j'en supportais la perte, et tu me réclamais ce qui m'était volé de jour et ce qui m'était volé de nuit;

the torn I have not brought in unto thee — I, I repay it — from my hand thou dost seek it; I have been deceived by day, and I have been deceived by night;

40 de jour j'étais dévoré par le chaud, et de nuit par la froidure, et le sommeil fuyait mes paupières.

I have been [thus]: in the day consumed me hath drought, and frost by night, and wander doth my sleep from mine eyes.

41 Me voici avec vingt ans passés à te servir dans ta maison, quatorze ans pour tes deux filles et six ans pour ton troupeau; et dix fois tu as changé mon salaire.

'This [is] to me twenty years in thy house: I have served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy flock; and thou changest my hire ten times;

42 Si le Dieu de mon père et le Dieu d'Abraham et Celui qu'Isaac redoute n'eût été avec moi, tu m'aurais laissé partir sans rien. Dieu a eu égard à ma misère et au labeur de mes mains, et la nuit dernière Il a jugé.

unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the Fear of Isaac, had been for me, surely now empty thou hadst sent me away; mine affliction and the labour of my hands hath God seen, and reproveth yesternight.'

43 Alors Laban répondit et dit à Jacob: Ces filles sont mes filles, et ces fils, mes fils, et ce troupeau, mon troupeau, et tout ce que tu vois, est à moi; et pour mes filles que puis-je faire aujourd'hui, et pour leurs fils qu'elles ont enfantés?

And Laban answereth and saith unto Jacob, 'The daughters [are] my daughters, and the sons my sons, and the flock my flock, and all that thou art seeing [is] mine; and to my daughters — what do I to these to-day, or to their sons whom they have born?

44 Eh bien donc! faisons un pacte moi et toi et qu'il soit témoin entre moi et toi!

and now, come, let us make a covenant, I and thou, and it hath been for a witness between me and thee.'

45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre, et l'érigea en monument.

And Jacob taketh a stone, and lifteth it up [for] a standing pillar;

46 Et Jacob dit à ses frères: Ramassez des pierres; et ils prirent des pierres et en firent une pile, et ils mangèrent là sur la pile.

and Jacob saith to his brethren, 'Gather stones,' and they take stones, and make a heap; and they eat there on the heap;

47 Et Laban l'appela du nom de Jegar Sahadutha; mais Jacob l'appela Galed (pile du témoignage).

and Laban calleth it Jegar-Sahadutha; and Jacob hath called it Galeed.

48 Et Laban dit: Que cette pile soit aujourd'hui témoin entre moi et toi.

And Laban saith, 'This heap [is] witness between me and thee to-day;' therefore hath he called its name Galeed;

49 C'est pourquoi on l'appelle du nom de Galed et de Mitspa (vedette) parce qu'il dit: Que l'Éternel veille entre toi et moi, quand nous ne serons plus en vue l'un de l'autre,

Mizpah also, for he said, 'Jehovah doth watch between me and thee, for we are hidden one from another;

50 à ce que tu ne rendes pas mes filles malheureuses, et que tu n'associes pas d'autres femmes à mes filles. Personne n'est avec nous, vois, Dieu est témoin entre moi et toi.

if thou afflict my daughters, or take wives beside my daughters — there is no man with us — see, God [is] witness between me and thee.'

51 Et Laban dit à Jacob: Voici cette pile, et voici ce monument que j'ai élevé entre toi et moi,

And Laban saith to Jacob, 'Lo, this heap, and lo, the standing pillar which I have cast between me and thee;

52 qu'elle soit témoin cette pile, qu'il soit témoin ce monument, que pour nous nuire l'un à l'autre nous ne nous avancerons point au-delà de ce monument, ni moi de ton côté, ni toi de mon côté.

this heap [is] witness, and the standing pillar [is] witness, that I do not pass over this heap unto thee, and that thou dost not pass over this heap and this standing pillar unto me — for evil;

53 Que le Dieu d'Abraham et le Dieu de Nachor soit soit juge entre nous, le Dieu de leurs pères. Alors Jacob jura par Celui qu'Isaac, son père, redoutait.

the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, doth judge between us — the God of their father,' and Jacob sweareth by the Fear of his father Isaac.

54 Et Jacob offrit un sacrifice sur la montagne, et il invita ses frères à manger le pain, et ils mangèrent le pain et passèrent la nuit sur la montagne.

And Jacob sacrificeth a sacrifice in the mount, and calleth to his brethren to eat bread, and they eat bread, and lodge in the mount;

55 Et Laban se leva le matin, et donna le baiser à ses fils et à ses filles, et les bénit et partit, et Laban retourna chez lui.

and Laban riseth early in the morning, and kisseth his sons and his daughters, and blesseth them; and Laban goeth on, and turneth back to his place.
