Genèse 28
1 Alors Isaac fit venir Jacob et le bénit, et il lui donna ses ordres en ces termes: Tu ne prendras point de femme parmi les filles de Canaan.
Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.
2 Lève-toi et t'en va en Mésopotamie dans la maison de Béthuel, père de ta mère, et là choisis-toi une femme parmi les filles de Laban, frère de ta mère.
Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.
3 Et que Dieu, le Tout-Puissant, te bénisse et te rende fécond et te multiplie, afin que tu deviennes une multitude de peuples.
May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples,
4 Et qu'il te confère la bénédiction d'Abraham, à toi et à ta postérité avec toi, afin que tu possèdes le pays de tes pèlerinages, que Dieu a donné à Abraham.
and give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you, that you may inherit the land where you travel, which God gave to Abraham.”
5 Et Isaac congédia Jacob, qui prit son chemin vers la Mésopotamie, vers Laban, fils de Bcthuel, l'Araméen, frère de Rebecca, mère de Jacob et d'Esaü.
Isaac sent Jacob away. He went to Paddan Aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.
6 Et Esaü voyant qu'Isaac avait béni Jacob et l'avait envoyé en Mésopotamie pour s'y choisir une femme, en le bénissant et lui donnant cet ordre: Tu ne prendras point de femme parmi les filles de Canaan;
Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan Aram, to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a command, saying, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;”
7 et que Jacob avait obéi à son père et à sa mère et était parti pour la Mésopotamie,
and that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan Aram.
8 Esaü vit alors que les filles de Canaan déplaisaient à son père Isaac,
Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan didn’t please Isaac, his father.
9 et Esaü alla chez Ismaël, et en sus des femmes qu'il avait, il épousa Mahalath, fille d'Ismaël, fils d'Abraham, sœur de Nebaioth.
So Esau went to Ishmael, and took, in addition to the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.
10 Ainsi Jacob partit de Beersébah et gagna Charan.
Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went towards Haran.
11 Et étant arrivé en un certain lieu, il y passa la nuit, car le soleil était couché. Et prenant une des pierres de l'endroit il en fit son chevet, et il coucha dans ce lieu-là.
He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 Alors il eut un songe, et voici, une échelle était dressée sur la terre, et son sommet touchait au ciel, et voici, les anges de Dieu la montaient et la descendaient.
He dreamt and saw a stairway set upon the earth, and its top reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13 Et voici, l'Éternel se tenait au-dessus d'elle et disait: Je suis l'Éternel, Dieu d'Abraham, ton père, et Dieu d'Isaac. Cette terre où tu es couché, je te la donnerai à toi et à ta postérité.
Behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. I will give the land you lie on to you and to your offspring.
14 Et ta postérité deviendra comme la poussière de la terre, et tu t'étendras à l'occident et à l'orient et au septentrion et au midi, et toutes les races de la terre auront leur bénédiction dans toi et dans ta postérité.
Your offspring will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your offspring, all the families of the earth will be blessed.
15 Et voici, je suis avec toi pour te garder partout où tu iras, et te ramener dans ce pays; car je ne te quitterai point que je n'aie exécuté ce que je t'ai promis.
Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you until I have done that which I have spoken of to you.”
16 Alors Jacob se réveilla de son sommeil et dit: En vérité, l'Éternel est en ce lieu, et je ne le savais pas!
Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I didn’t know it.”
17 Et il eut crainte et dit: Que ce lieu est redoutable! Ce n'est autre chose que la maison de Dieu, et c'est la porte des cieux!
He was afraid, and said, “How awesome this place is! This is none other than God’s house, and this is the gate of heaven.”
18 Et Jacob se leva le matin, et prit la pierre dont il avait fait son chevet, et l'érigea en monument et versa de l'huile sur sa cime.
Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on its top.
19 Et il donna à ce lieu le nom de Béthel (maison de Dieu); or dans l'origine Luz était le nom de la ville.
He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.
20 Et Jacob prononça un vœu en ces termes: Si Dieu est avec moi et me garde pendant le voyage que je fais maintenant, et me donne du pain pour me nourrir et des habits pour me vêtir,
Jacob vowed a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on,
21 et si je reviens sain et sauf dans la maison de mon père, l'Éternel sera mon Dieu,
so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, and the LORD will be my God,
22 et cette pierre que j'ai dressée comme monument, deviendra une maison de Dieu, et je Te paierai la dîme de tout ce que Tu me donneras.
then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God’s house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give a tenth to you.”
