Esther 9
1 Et au douzième mois, c'est-à-dire au mois d'Adar, le treizième jour du mois, jour où s'exécuta le prononcé et l'ordre du roi, le jour où les ennemis des Juifs espéraient venir à bout d'eux, et où les choses tournèrent de telle sorte que ce furent les Juifs qui vinrent à bout de leurs adversaires,
Now in the twelfth month (that is the month of Adar), on the thirteenth day, when the king’s command and his decree was about to put into execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to gain the mastery over them, then the tables were turned so that the Jews had the mastery over those who hated them.
2 les Juifs se rassemblèrent dans leurs villes, dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus pour faire main basse sur ceux qui cherchaient leur ruine; et personne ne leur tint, tête, car tous les peuples subissaient la terreur qu'ils donnaient.
The Jews gathered together in the cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, to attack anyone who tried to harm them. No one could withstand them, for the fear of them had fallen on all the peoples.
3 Et tous les chefs des provinces et les satrapes et les gouverneurs et les agents du roi soutinrent les Juifs, car Mardochée leur inspirait la terreur.
All the princes of the provinces and the satraps and the governors and they who attended to the king’s business, helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them.
4 En effet, grand était Mardochée au Palais et sa renommée se répandait dans toutes les provinces, parce que la personne de Mardochée allait toujours grandissant.
For Mordecai was great in the king’s palace, and as his power increased his fame spread throughout all the provinces.
5 Et les Juifs battirent tous leurs ennemis à coups d'épée, et ce fut un massacre et une extermination, et ils traitèrent leurs adversaires à leur discrétion.
The Jews put all their enemies to the sword and, with slaughter and destruction, they did what they wanted to those who hated them.
6 Et dans Suse, la ville capitale, les Juifs tuèrent et firent périr cinq cents hommes;
In Susa the capital the Jews killed five hundred people.
7 et Parsandatha et Dalphon et Aspatha
They killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,
8 et Poratha et Adalia et Aridatha
Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,
9 et Parmaslha et Arisaï et Aridaï et Vajezatha,
Parmashta, Arisia, Aridai, and Vaizatha,
10 les dix fils d'Aman, fils de Medatha, l'ennemi des Juifs, furent égorgés par eux, mais ils ne touchèrent pas au butin.
the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy; but they did not take any plunder.
11 Le même jour, le nombre des hommes tués dans Suse, la ville capitale, fut porté devant le roi.
On that day the number of those who were slain in Susa was brought before the king,
12 Et le roi dit à la reine Esther: Dans Suse, la ville capitale, les Juifs ont tué et massacré cinq cents hommes, et les dix fils d'Aman: qu'auront-ils fait dans les autres provinces du roi? Et quelle est ta demande? elle te sera accordée; et ton désir encore? et il sera satisfait.
and the king said to Queen Esther, ‘The Jews have slain five hundred people in Susa, and the ten sons of Haman. What then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It will be granted to you. What is your request? It will be done.’
13 Et Esther dit: S'il plaît au roi, que demain aussi il soit permis aux Juifs dans Suse d'agir d'après l'ordre d'aujourd'hui; et que les dix fils d'Aman soient pendus au poteau.
‘If it please the king,’ Esther said, ‘let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to this day’s decree. Let the bodies of Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.’
14 Et le roi ordonna qu'ainsi fût fait. Et l'ordre fut donné dans Suse, et les dix fils d'Aman furent pendus.
And the king commanded it to be done. A decree was given out in Susa and they hung the bodies of Haman’s ten sons on the gallows.
15 Les Juifs se rassemblèrent donc aussi dans Suse le quatorzième jour du mois d'Adar et massacrèrent dans Suse trois cents hommes, mais ils ne touchèrent point au butin.
The Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together again on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar. They killed three hundred people in Susa. But they did not take any plunder.
16 De même, les autres Juifs dans les provinces du roi se rassemblèrent et défendirent leur vie, et conquirent le repos sur leurs ennemis, et tuèrent soixante-quinze mille de leurs adversaires, mais ils ne touchèrent point au butin:
And the other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together and fought for their lives and overcame their enemies. They killed seventy-five thousand who hated them. But they did not take any plunder.
17 c'était le treizième jour du mois d'Adar. Et le quatorzième jour de ce mois, ils avaient le repos, et ils en firent un jour de festins et de réjouissances.
This was on the thirteenth day of Adar. On the fourteenth day of the month Adar the Jews rested and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing.
18 Et les Juifs dans Suse se rassemblèrent le treizième jour et aussi le quatorzième jour et eurent le repos le quinzième jour de ce mois; et ils en firent un jour de festins et de réjouissances.
(But the Jews in Susa gathered on both the thirteenth and fourteenth day – and rested on the fifteenth day of the same month and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing.)
19 C'est pourquoi les Juifs de la campagne habitant les villes du pays plat font du quatorzième jour du mois d'Adar un jour de réjouissances et de festins et un jour de fête et dans lequel l'on s'envoie mutuellement des mets.
This is why the Jews who live in the country villages keep the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day of rejoicing and feasting and a holiday, and a day in which they send gifts of food to each other.
20 Et Mardochée rédigea par écrit ces histoires, et il adressa des lettres à tous les Juifs dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus, rapprochées et éloignées,
Mordecai had these things recorded. He sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, both near and far.
21 pour leur poser comme règle de célébrer chaque année le quatorzième jour et le quinzième du mois d'Adar,
He told them to keep the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and also the fifteenth day every year,
22 comme jours auxquels les Juifs avaient conquis le repos sur leurs ennemis, et comme le mois où il y avait eu pour eux changement d'affliction en joie et de deuil en fête, pour les célébrer comme jours de festins et de réjouissances, et où l'on s'envoie mutuellement des mets, et où l'on fait des dons aux pauvres.
as the days on which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned from sorrow to gladness and from mourning into a feast day. They should make them days of feasting and gladness and of sending gifts of food to each other and of gifts to the poor.
23 Et les Juifs adoptèrent ce qu'ils avaient commencé de faire et que Mardochée leur prescrivait.
So what the Jews had begun to do they adopted as a custom, just as Mordecai had written to them.
24 C'est que Aman, fils de Medatha, l'Agagite, l'ennemi de tous les Juifs, avait formé contre les Juifs le plan de les anéantir, et avait tiré au Pur, c'est-à-dire au sort, en vue de leur désastre et de leur destruction.
For Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted to destroy them. He had cast “Pur”, that is the lot, intending to consume them and to destroy them.
25 Et lorsque Esther se présenta devant le roi, il ordonna par lettres que le funeste plan qu'il avait formé contre les Juifs, retombât sur sa tête, et il fut pendu au poteau, ainsi que ses fils.
But when the matter came before the king, he gave written orders that his wicked plot, which he had planned against the Jews, should come upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26 C'est pourquoi ils donnèrent à ces jours le nom de Purim d'après le mot Pur. C'est pourquoi ensuite de toute la teneur de cette lettre, et ensuite de tout ce qu'ils en avaient vu et de ce qui leur était arrivé,
This is why these days are called Purim, after the word Pur. Therefore because of all the words of this letter, as well as all they had seen, and all they had experienced,
27 les Juifs fixèrent et adoptèrent pour eux et leur postérité et pour tous ceux qui s'attacheraient à eux, l'usage inviolable de célébrer ces deux jours selon la règle écrite et à l'époque déterminée, chaque année,
the Jews established and made it a custom for them, for their descendants, and for all who should join them, so that it might not be repealed, that they should continue to observe these two days as feasts each year,
28 et ces jours devaient rester dans la mémoire et être célébrés dans toutes et chaque générations, dans chaque famille, dans chaque province et dans chaque ville; et ces jours du Purim devaient ne jamais se perdre parmi les Juifs et leur souvenir ne pas s'effacer dans leur race.
and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city. And these days of Purim should not pass away from among the Jews nor the remembrance of them disappear among their descendants.
29 Et la reine Esther, fille d'Abihaïl, et Mardochée, le Juif, écrivirent avec toute leur autorité pour confirmer cette seconde lettre concernant le Purim.
Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, gave Mordecai the Jew all authority in writing to confirm this second letter of Purim.
30 Et l'on adressa des lettres à tous les Juifs dans les cent vingt-sept provinces de l'empire d'Assuérus, des paroles de paix et de fidélité
He sent letters to all the Jews, to the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, wishing them peace and security,
31 pour consolider ces jours du Purim, à l'époque précise, comme Mardochée, le Juif, et la reine Esther les avaient institués, et comme ils avaient établi pour eux-mêmes et leur postérité, la règle de leur jeûne et de leur cri.
to confirm these days of Purim in their proper times, to be observed as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had directed and as the Jews had proscribed for themselves and their descendants, in the matter of the fastings and their cry of lamentation.
32 Et l'ordre d'Esther confirma cette institution du Purim et fut consigné dans un livre.
And the commands of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the records.
