Esther 4

1 Et lorsque Mardochée apprit tout ce qui s'était fait, il déchira ses habits, et revêtit le cilice et la cendre, et parut au milieu de la ville et poussa un haut et lamentable cri.

When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

2 Et il vint jusque devant la porte du roi, car il n'était pas permis d'entrer en cilice dans la porte du roi.

And came even before the king’s gate: for none [might] enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.

3 Et dans toutes les provinces où parvinrent l'ordre du roi et son édit, il y eut une grande désolation parmi les Juifs, et jeûne et pleurs et deuil, et beaucoup se couvrirent du cilice et de la cendre.

And in every province, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, [there was] great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

4 Et les compagnes d'Esther et ses eunuques vinrent l'informer. Alors la reine fut dans une angoisse extrême, et elle envoya des habits pour en vêtir Mardochée, et lui faire déposer le cilice, mais il ne les accepta pas.

So Esther’s maids and her chamberlains came and told [it] her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received [it] not.

5 Alors Esther appela Hathach, l'un des eunuques que le roi avait placés auprès d'elle, et le dépêcha à Mardochée pour savoir ce que c'était et à quel sujet.

Then called Esther for Hatach, [one] of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it [was], and why it [was].

6 Et Hathach alla trouver Mardochée dans la Place de la ville, qui est devant la porte du roi.

So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which [was] before the king’s gate.

7 Et Mardochée lui raconta tout ce qui lui était survenu, en indiquant la somme d'argent qu'Aman avait promis de payer pour le prix des Juifs au trésor du roi, afin de les détruire.

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

8 Et il lui remit aussi la copie du rescrit publié dans Suse pour leur massacre, afin qu'il le montrât à Esther, qu'il la mît au fait de tout, et lui enjoignît de se rendre chez le roi pour implorer sa pitié et le prier en faveur de son peuple.

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew [it] unto Esther, and to declare [it] unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.

9 Et Hathach vint rapporter à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.

And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

10 Et Esther répondant à Hathach lui donna ce message pour Mardochée:

Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;

11 Tous les serviteurs du roi et les peuples des provinces du roi savent que quiconque, homme et femme, entre chez le roi dans la cour intérieure, sans être appelé, est, en vertu d'une loi spéciale, passible de la mort, à moins que le roi ne lui tende son sceptre d'or pour lui laisser la vie. Or je n'ai point été appelée à entrer chez le roi voici trente jours.

All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, [there is] one law of his to put [him] to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

12 Et l'on rapporta à Mardochée les paroles d'Esther.

And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.

13 Et Mardochée renvoya cette réponse à Esther: Ne te figure pas en ton âme pouvoir être sauvée dans le palais du roi plus que tous les Juifs.

Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.

14 Que si tu restais neutre à cette heure-ci, le secours et la délivrance arriveraient aux Juifs d'autre part, et toi et la maison de ton père vous péririez. Et qui sait si ce n'est pas pour cette heure-ci que tu es parvenue au rang de reine?

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, [then] shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for [such] a time as this?

15 Et Esther dit en réponse à Mardochée:

Then Esther bade [them] return Mordecai [this answer],

16 Va et rassemble tous les Juifs qui se trouvent dans Suse, et jeûnez pour moi, et ne mangez ni ne buvez pendant trois jours, ni jour, ni nuit. Moi aussi avec mes compagnes je jeûnerai de même, et ensuite j'irai chez le roi, malgré la loi; et si je péris, je périrai.

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which [is] not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

17 Et Mardochée s'en alla et exécuta tous les ordres que lui donnait Esther.

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
