1 Samuel 8

1 Et lorsque Samuel fut vieux, il préposa ses fils comme Juges sur Israël.

It happened, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

2 Et son fils premier-né se nommait Joël et son second fils Abija, et ils exerçaient la judicature à Beerséba.

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abijah: they were judges in Beersheba.

3 Mais ses fils ne suivirent pas ses errements; la cupidité les fit dévier et ils acceptèrent des présents et firent plier la justice.

His sons did not walk in his ways, but turned aside toward dishonest gain, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

4 Alors tous les Anciens d'Israël se réunirent et vinrent trouver Samuel à Rama pour lui dire:

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel to Ramah;

5 Voilà que tu es âgé et tes fils ne suivent pas tes errements; ainsi, établis-nous un roi qui nous régisse, comme toutes les nations.

and they said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations."

6 Et Samuel trouva mauvais qu'ils tinssent ce langage: Donne-nous un roi pour nous régir! et Samuel pria l'Éternel.

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." Samuel prayed to the LORD.

7 Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Ecoute la voix du peuple dans tout ce qu'il te dira; car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils rejettent, c'est moi qu'ils rejettent pour ne plus m'avoir pour leur roi.

The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.

8 La conduite que toujours ils ont tenue [envers moi] à partir du jour où je les retirai de l'Egypte, jusqu'aujourd'hui, en m'abandonnant et servant d'autres dieux, cette même conduite ils l'ont aussi envers toi.

According to all the works which they have done to me since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you.

9 Eh bien! écoute leur voix, mais adresse-leur une sommation, et leur explique le régime du roi qui régnera sur eux.

Now therefore listen to their voice: however you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who shall reign over them."

10 Et Samuel rapporta toutes les paroles de l'Éternel au peuple qui demandait un roi.

Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who asked of him a king.

11 Et il dit: Voici quel sera le régime du roi qui régnera sur vous. Il prendra vos fils qu'il mettra pour lui sur ses chars et dans sa cavalerie, et comme coureurs ils précéderont son char,

He said, "This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them to him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots.

12 et il se servira d'eux pour en faire des chefs de mille et des chefs de cinquante, et pour travailler à son labour et pour récolter ses moissons et pour confectionner ses armes de guerre et l'attirail de ses chars.

And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands, and commanders of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and gather his vintage, and to make his implements of war, and the equipment of his chariots.

13 Et il prendra vos filles comme parfumeuses, comme cuisinières et comme boulangères.

He will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

14 Et il prendra vos champs et vos vignes et vos olivaies, vos meilleures [terres] pour en doter ses serviteurs.

He will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive groves, even their best, and give them to his servants.

15 Et il lèvera des dîmes sur vos grains et vos vignes pour les donner à ses eunuques et à ses domestiques.

He will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

16 Et il prendra vos serviteurs et vos servantes et vos jeunes gens d'élite, les meilleurs, et vos ânes pour les employer à ses affaires.

He will take your male servants, and your female servants, and your best cattle, and your donkeys, and put them to his work.

17 Il dîmera vos brebis et vous-mêmes serez ses serviteurs.

He will take the tenth of your flocks: and you shall be his servants.

18 Et dans ce temps vous récriminerez contre le roi choisi par vous-mêmes, et l'Éternel ne vous exaucera pas.

You shall cry out in that day because of your king whom you shall have chosen for yourselves, and the LORD will not answer you in that day."

19 Mais le peuple refusa d'écouter la voix de Samuel et ils dirent: Non! car il nous faut au-dessus de nous un roi,

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, "No; but we will have a king over us,

20 afin que nous soyons sur le pied de toutes les nations, et que notre roi nous rende la justice, et marche à notre tête et soutienne nos guerres.

that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles."

21 Et Samuel entendit tous les propos du peuple et en fit rapport à l'Éternel.

Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the LORD.

22 Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Acquiesce à leur vœu et donne-leur un roi. Et Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël: Allez chacun de vous dans sa ville.

The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to their voice, and make them a king." Samuel said to the men of Israel, "Every man go to his city."
