1 Samuel 16

1 Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Jusques à quand t'attristeras-tu pour Saül, puisque moi je l'ai rejeté? il est déchu de la royauté d'Israël. Remplis ta corne d'huile et pars! je t'envoie chez Isaï de Bethléhem; car j'ai remarqué parmi ses fils un roi pour moi.

And YHWH said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

2 Et Samuel dit: Comment irais-je! Si Saül l'apprend, il me fera mourir. Et l'Éternel dit: Prends avec toi une génisse et dis: Je viens offrir un sacrifice à l'Éternel.

And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he Will kill me. And YHWH said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to YHWH.

3 Et convie Isaï au sacrifice, et moi je t'indiquerai ce que tu auras à faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te dirai.

And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.

4 Et Samuel fit ce que prescrivait l'Éternel et vint à Bethléem. Alors les Anciens de la ville accoururent inquiets au-devant lui et dirent: Ta venue est-elle un signe de paix?

And Samuel did that which YHWH spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

5 Et il dit: De paix! C'est pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Éternel que j'arrive. Mettez-vous en état de sainteté et venez avec moi au sacrifice. Et il mit en état de sainteté Isaï et ses fils et les convia au sacrifice.

And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto YHWH: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

6 Et lorsqu'ils parurent, il aperçut Eliab et se dit: Certes voilà devant l'Éternel son Oint!

And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely YHWH 's anointed is before him.

7 Mais l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Ne considère pas sa figure et la hauteur de sa taille, car je l'ai rejeté; car [je ne considère] pas ce que l'homme considère; car l'homme considère l'aspect, mais l'Éternel considère le cœur.

But YHWH said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for YHWH seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but YHWH looketh on the heart.

8 Alors Isaï appela Abinadab et le fit passer devant Samuel. Et il dit: De celui-ci l'Éternel n'a pas fait choix.

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath YHWH chosen this.

9 Alors Isaï fit passer Samma. Et il dit: De celui-ci aussi l'Éternel n'a pas fait choix.

Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath YHWH chosen this.

10 Et Isaï fit ainsi passer sept de ses fils devant Samuel. Et Samuel dit à Isaï: L'Éternel n'a pas fait choix de ceux-ci.

Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, YHWH hath not chosen these.

11 Puis Samuel dit à Isaï: Sont-ce là tous tes enfants? Et il répondit il reste encore le cadet, et voici, il fait paître les brebis. Et Samuel dit: Envoie-le chercher! car nous ne prendrons pas place qu'il ne soit ici.

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

12 Isaï l'envoya donc chercher. Or il était blond ayant aussi de beaux yeux et bonne mine. Et l'Éternel dit: Lève-toi! oins-le; car c'est lui.

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And YHWH said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

13 Samuel prit la corne d'huile et l'oignit au milieu de ses frères. Et à partir de ce jour l'Esprit de l'Éternel descendit désormais sur David. Et Samuel se leva et partit pour Rama.

Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of YHWH came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 Cependant l'Esprit de l'Éternel se retira d'avec Saül et de par l'Éternel il subit les atteintes d'un mauvais esprit.

But the Spirit of YHWH departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from YHWH troubled him.

15 Et les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent: Te voilà assailli par un mauvais esprit de par Dieu.

And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from Elohim troubleth thee.

16 Que notre Seigneur parle donc, et tes serviteurs présents chercheront un homme habile à jouer du luth, et lorsque tu sentiras les atteintes du mauvais esprit divin, de sa main il jouera, et tu te trouveras mieux.

Let ourmaster now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from Elohim is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17 Et Saül dit à ses serviteurs: Oui, cherchez un homme qui soit bon musicien et me l'amenez.

And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 Et l'un des servants prit la parole et dit: Voici, j'ai vu un fils d'Isaï de Bethléhem, habile musicien et très homme de bien, et guerrier et ayant le talent de bien dire et ayant une belle figure, et l'Éternel est avec lui.

Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and YHWH is with him.

19 Alors Saül dépêcha des messagers à Isaï pour lui dire: Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est berger.

Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

20 Et Isaï prit un âne avec du pain et une outre de vin et un chevreau, qu'il envoya par David, son fils, à Saül.

And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

21 C'est ainsi que David entra chez Saül, et il fut à son service, et il prit beaucoup d'affection pour lui et il devint son écuyer.

And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

22 Et Saül envoya ce message à Isaï: Laisse donc David à mon service, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux.

And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

23 Et lorsque l'esprit de Dieu assaillait Saül, David prenait son luth et en jouait de sa main et Saül était soulagé et il se trouvait mieux, et le mauvais esprit s'éloignait de lui.

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from Elohim was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
