1 Alors Élie, le Thishbite, l'un de ceux qui s'étaient établis en Galaad, dit à Achab: L'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, en la présence de qui je me tiens, est vivant! pendant ces années-ci, il n'y aura ni rosée ni pluie, sinon à ma parole.
And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, saith unto Ahab, 'Jehovah, God of Israel, liveth, before whom I have stood, there is not these years dew and rain, except according to my word.'
2 Et la parole de l'Éternel lui fut adressée en ces termes:
And the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,
3 Va-t'en d'ici, tourne-toi vers l'Orient, et cache-toi au torrent de Kérith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
'Go from this [place]; and thou hast turned for thee eastward, and been hidden by the brook Cherith, that [is] on the front of the Jordan,
4 Tu boiras au torrent, et j'ai commandé aux corbeaux de t'y nourrir.
and it hath been, from the brook thou dost drink, and the ravens I have commanded to sustain thee there.'
5 Il partit donc et fit selon la parole de l'Éternel; il s'en alla et demeura au torrent de Kérith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
And he goeth and doth according to the word of Jehovah, yea, he goeth and dwelleth by the brook Cherith, that [is] on the front of the Jordan,
6 Et les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la viande le matin, du pain et de la viande le soir; et il buvait au torrent.
and the ravens are bringing to him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and of the brook he drinketh.
7 Mais il arriva qu'au bout de quelque temps le torrent fut à sec, parce qu'il n'y avait pas eu de pluie au pays.
And it cometh to pass, at the end of days, that the brook drieth up, for there hath been no rain in the land,
8 Alors la parole de l'Éternel lui fut adressée en ces termes:
and the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,
9 Lève-toi, va-t'en à Sarepta, qui appartient à Sidon, et demeure là. Voici, j'ai commandé là à une femme veuve de te nourrir.
'Rise, go to Zarephath, that [is] to Zidon, and thou hast dwelt there; lo, I have commanded there a widow woman to sustain thee.'
10 Il se leva donc et s'en alla à Sarepta; et, comme il arrivait à la porte de la ville, voici, il y avait là une femme veuve qui ramassait du bois; il l'appela et lui dit: Je te prie, prends-moi un peu d'eau dans un vase, et que je boive.
And he riseth, and goeth to Zarephath, and cometh in unto the opening of the city, and lo there, a widow woman gathering sticks, and he calleth unto her, and saith, 'Bring, I pray thee, to me, a little water in a vessel, and I drink.'
11 Et elle s'en alla pour en prendre; mais il la rappela et lui dit: Je te prie, prends en ta main une bouchée de pain pour moi.
And she goeth to bring [it], and he calleth unto her and saith, 'Bring, I pray thee, to me a morsel of bread in thy hand.'
12 Mais elle répondit: L'Éternel ton Dieu est vivant! je n'ai pas une galette; je n'ai qu'une poignée de farine dans une cruche, et un peu d'huile dans une fiole; et voici, je ramasse deux bûches, puis je rentrerai et j'apprêterai cela pour moi et pour mon fils; nous le mangerons, et après nous mourrons.
And she saith, 'Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but the fulness of the hand of meal in a pitcher, and a little oil in a dish; and lo, I am gathering two sticks, and have gone in and prepared it for myself, and for my son, and we have eaten it — and died.'
13 Et Élie lui dit: Ne crains point, rentre, fais comme tu l'as dit; toutefois fais-m'en premièrement une petite galette; tu me l'apporteras dehors, et après tu en feras pour toi et pour ton fils.
And Elijah saith unto her, 'Fear not, go, do according to thy word, only make for me thence a little cake, in the first place, and thou hast brought out to me; and for thee and for thy son make — last;
14 Car ainsi a dit l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël: La farine qui est dans la cruche ne manquera point, et l'huile qui est dans la fiole ne finira point, jusqu'au jour où l'Éternel enverra de la pluie sur la terre.
for thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, The pitcher of meal is not consumed, and the dish of oil is not lacking, till the day of Jehovah's giving a shower on the face of the ground.'
15 Elle s'en alla donc, et fit comme Élie avait dit; et elle en mangea, elle et sa famille, ainsi que lui, pendant longtemps.
And she goeth, and doth according to the word of Elijah, and she eateth, she and he, and her household — days;
16 La farine de la cruche ne manqua point, et l'huile de la fiole ne finit point, selon la parole que l'Éternel avait prononcée par Élie.
the pitcher of meal was not consumed, and the dish of oil did not lack, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake by the hand of Elijah.
17 Après ces choses, il arriva que le fils de la maîtresse de la maison tomba malade; et la maladie s'aggrava tellement qu'il ne resta plus de souffle en lui.
And it cometh to pass, after these things, the son of the woman, mistress of the house, hath been sick, and his sickness is very severe till that no breath hath been left in him.
18 Et elle dit à Élie: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu venu chez moi pour renouveler la mémoire de mon iniquité, et pour faire mourir mon fils?
And she saith unto Elijah, 'What — to me and to thee, O man of God? thou hast come unto me to cause mine iniquity to be remembered, and to put my son to death!'
19 Et il lui dit: Donne-moi ton fils. Et il le prit d'entre ses bras, et le porta dans la chambre haute où il demeurait, et il le coucha sur son lit.
And he saith unto her, 'Give to me thy son;' and he taketh him out of her bosom, and taketh him up unto the upper chamber where he is abiding, and layeth him on his own bed,
20 Puis il cria à l'Éternel et dit: Éternel mon Dieu, est-ce que tu affligerais même cette veuve, chez qui je demeure, au point de faire mourir son fils?
and crieth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'Jehovah my God, also on the widow with whom I am sojourning hast Thou done evil — to put her son to death?'
21 Et il s'étendit sur l'enfant, par trois fois; et il cria à l'Éternel, et dit: Éternel mon Dieu, je te prie, que l'âme de cet enfant rentre en lui!
And he stretcheth himself out on the lad three times, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'O Jehovah my God, let turn back, I pray Thee, the soul of this lad into his midst;'
22 Et l'Éternel exauça la voix d'Élie; et l'âme de l'enfant rentra en lui, et il recouvra la vie.
and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the lad turneth back into his midst, and he liveth.
23 Alors Élie prit l'enfant, et le descendit de la chambre haute dans la maison, et le donna à sa mère; et il dit: Regarde, ton fils vit.
And Elijah taketh the lad, and bringeth him down from the upper chamber of the house, and giveth him to his mother, and Elijah saith, 'See, thy son liveth!'
24 Et la femme dit à Élie: Je connais maintenant que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de l'Éternel qui est dans ta bouche est la vérité.
And the woman saith unto Elijah, 'Now, this I have known, that a man of God thou [art], and the word of Jehovah in thy mouth [is] truth.'
