1 Ayant ainsi parlé, Jésus, accompagné de ses disciples, passa au delà du torrent de Cédron, où se trouvait un jardin dans lequel il entra avec eux.
When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.
2 Judas, qui le livrait, connaissait aussi ce lieu-là, parce que Jésus y était souvent allé avec ses disciples.
Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.
3 Judas donc, à la tête de la cohorte et des agents des principaux sacrificateurs et des pharisiens, y vint avec des lanternes, des flambeaux et des armes.
Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Alors Jésus, qui savait tout ce qui devait lui arriver, sortit et leur dit: «Qui cherchez- vous?»
Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
5 Ils lui répondirent: «Jésus de Nazareth.» Jésus leur dit: «C'est moi.» Or Judas, qui le livrait, était là avec eux.
They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
6 Lorsque Jésus leur eut dit, «c'est moi, » ils reculèrent et tombèrent par terre.
When therefore he said to them, “I am he,” they went backward and fell to the ground.
7 Il leur demanda une seconde fois: «Qui cherchez-vous?» Ils répondirent: «Jésus de Nazareth.»
Again therefore he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jésus reprit: «Je vous ai dit que c'est moi. Si donc c'est moi que vous cherchez, laissez aller ceux-ci.»
Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,”
9 Il parla ainsi, afin que s'accomplît cette parole qu'il avait dite: «Je n'ai perdu aucun de ceux que tu m'as donnés.»
that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none.”
10 Simon Pierre, qui avait une épée, la tira, en frappa le serviteur du souverain sacrificateur, et lui coupa l'oreille droite: ce serviteur s'appelait Malchus.
Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 Jésus dit à Pierre: «Remets ton épée dans le fourreau: ne boirai-je pas le calice que mon Père m'a donné à boire?»
Jesus therefore said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?”
12 Alors la cohorte, le tribun et les agents des Juifs se saisirent de Jésus, le lièrent,
So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews seized Jesus and bound him,
13 et l'emmenèrent d'abord chez Anne: c'était le beau-père de Caïphe qui était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là,
and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 et Caïphe était celui qui avait donné aux Juifs ce conseil: «Il est avantageux qu'un seul homme périsse pour le peuple.»
Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.
15 Cependant Simon Pierre et l'autre disciple suivaient Jésus. Ce disciple était connu du souverain sacrificateur, et il entra en même temps que Jésus dans la cour du souverain sacrificateur,
Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;
16 tandis que Pierre était resté à la porte, en dehors. L'autre disciple, qui était connu du souverain sacrificateur, sortit donc, parla à la portière, et fit entrer Pierre.
but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Alors cette servante dit à Pierre: «N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, des disciples de cet homme?» Il dit: «Je n'en suis point.»
Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, “Are you also one of this man’s disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Les serviteurs et les agents se tenaient autour d'un brasier qu'ils avaient allumé, parce qu'il faisait froid, et ils se chauffaient. Pierre était aussi là, et se chauffait avec eux.
Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 Le souverain sacrificateur interrogea Jésus sur ses disciples et sur sa doctrine.
The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 Jésus lui répondit: «J'ai parlé ouvertement à tout le monde; j'ai toujours enseigné en pleine synagogue et dans le temple, où tous les Juifs s'assemblent, et je n'ai rien dit en secret.
Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.
21 Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? Demande à ceux qui m'ont entendu ce que je leur ai dit: ils savent ce que j'ai dit.»
Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things which I said.”
22 Comme il prononçait ces mots, un des agents, qui se trouvait-là, donna un soufflet à Jésus, en disant: «C'est ainsi que tu réponds au souverain sacrificateur?»
When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, “Do you answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jésus lui répondit: «Si j'ai mal parlé, fais voir ce que j'ai dit de mal; mais si j'ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu?»
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
24 Anne l'avait envoyé lié à Caïphe, le souverain sacrificateur.
Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.
25 Cependant Simon Pierre était debout qui se chauffait. On lui dit donc: «N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, de ses disciples?» Il le nia, et dit: «Je n'en suis point.»
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26 Un des serviteurs du souverain sacrificateur, parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, lui dit: «Ne t'ai-je pas vu avec lui dans le jardin?»
One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”
27 Pierre le nia encore une fois, et aussitôt un coq chanta.
Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.
28 Les sénateurs menèrent donc Jésus de chez Caïphe au prétoire. C'était de grand matin. Ils n'entrèrent point dans le prétoire de peur de se souiller et de ne pouvoir manger la pâque.
They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn’t enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
29 Pilate se rendit donc vers eux, et leur dit: «De quoi accusez-vous cet homme?»
Pilate therefore went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30 Ils lui répondirent: «Si ce n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré.»
They answered him, “If this man weren’t an evildoer, we wouldn’t have delivered him up to you.”
31 Alors Pilate leur dit: «Prenez-le vous-mêmes, et le jugez selon votre loi.» Mais les Juifs lui répondirent: «Nous n'avons pas le droit de mettre à mort personne.»
Pilate therefore said to them, “Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is illegal for us to put anyone to death,”
32 Cela arriva, afin que s'accomplît la parole que Jésus avait prononcée, quand il avait indiqué de quelle mort il devait mourir.
that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
33 Pilate étant rentré dans le prétoire, fit venir Jésus et lui dit: «C'est toi qui es le roi des Juifs?»
Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jésus répondit: «Dis-tu cela de toi-même, ou d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi?»
Jesus answered him, “Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?”
35 — «Suis-je Juif, moi?» lui répliqua Pilate. «La nation et les principaux sacrificateurs t'ont livré à moi: qu'as-tu fait?»
Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?”
36 Jésus répondit: «Mon royaume n'est pas de ce monde. Si mon royaume était de ce monde, mes gens auraient combattu pour que je ne fusse pas livré aux Juifs, mais mon royaume n'est pas d'ici-bas.»
Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn’t be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate lui dit: «Ainsi tu es roi?» — «Tu le dis, répondit Jésus, je suis roi; je suis né, et je suis venu dans le monde pour rendre témoignage à la vérité. Quiconque est pour la vérité, écoute ma voix.»
Pilate therefore said to him, “Are you a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Pilate lui dit: «Qu'est-ce que la vérité?» En disant ces mots, il se rendit de nouveau vers les Juifs, et leur dit: «Pour moi, je ne trouve aucun crime en lui;
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no basis for a charge against him.
39 mais il est d'usage que je vous relâche un prisonnier à Pâque, voulez-vous donc que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs?»
But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 Alors tous crièrent de nouveau: «Non pas lui, mais Barrabas.» Or Barrabas était un brigand.
Then they all shouted again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
