Actes 8
1 Saul applaudissait à ce meurtre. Le même jour, une violente persécution éclata sur l'église de Jérusalem; tous les fidèles, excepté les apôtres, se dispersèrent dans les campagnes de la Judée et de la Samarie.
Saul approved of his being put to death. On that very day a great persecution broke out against the church which was in Jerusalem; and its members, with the exception of the apostles, were all scattered over the districts of Judea and Samaria.
2 Toutefois des hommes religieux enterrèrent Etienne en faisant de grandes lamentations.
Some religious men buried Stephen, with loud lamentations for him.
3 Saul désolait l'église; il pénétrait dans les maisons, en arrachait les hommes et les femmes, et les faisait jeter en prison.
But Saul began to devastate the church; he entered house after house, dragged out men and women alike, and threw them into prison.
4 Ceux donc qui étaient dispersés, s'en allèrent de lieu en lieu annonçant la Parole.
Now those who were scattered in different directions went from place to place proclaiming the good news.
5 Philippe entre autres, s'étant rendu dans une ville de Samarie, y prêcha le Messie, et les foules s'attachèrent toutes à ce qu'il leur disait, quand elles apprirent et virent les miracles qu'il faisait;
Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and there began to preach the Christ.
6 car les esprits impurs sortaient de plusieurs possédés, en poussant de grands cris. Beaucoup de paralytiques et de boiteux furent aussi guéris;
The people, one and all, listened attentively to what Philip told them, when they heard of, and saw, the miracles which he was working.
7 et ce fut une grande joie dans cette ville.
For there were many instances of people with foul spirits, where the spirits, with loud screams, came out of them; and many who were paralysed or lame were cured,
8 Il s'y trouvait déjà un homme nommé Simon, qui exerçait la magie et qui émerveillait le peuple de Samarie. Il se donnait pour un grand personnage,
so that there was great rejoicing throughout that city.
9 et tous, petits et grands, s'étaient attachés à lui, et disaient: «C'est la Puissance de Dieu, celle qu'on appelle la Grande Puissance.»
There was staying in the city a man named Simon, who had been practicing magic there and mystifying the Samaritan people, giving himself out to be some great being.
10 Ils s'étaient donc attachés à lui, parce que, pendant assez longtemps, il les avait charmés par sa magie.
Everyone, high and low, paid attention to him. “This man,” they used to say, “must be that power of God which people call ‘The Great Power.’”
11 Mais, quand ils eurent cru Philippe, qui leur annonçait ce qui a trait au royaume de Dieu et à la personne de Jésus-Christ, hommes et femmes se firent baptiser.
And they paid attention to him because they had for a long time been mystified by his magic arts.
12 Simon même crut aussi, et, après s'être fait baptiser, il ne quittait plus Philippe, et il s'extasiait à la vue des miracles et des prodiges qui s'opéraient.
However, when they came to believe Philip, as he told them the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Les apôtres, qui étaient à Jérusalem, ayant appris que la Samarie avait accueilli la parole de Dieu, y envoyèrent Pierre et Jean.
Even Simon believed, and after his baptism attached himself to Philip, and was in his turn mystified at seeing signs and great miracles constantly occurring.
14 Ceux-ci, s'y étant rendus, prièrent pour que les Samaritains reçussent le Saint-Esprit,
When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that the Samaritans had welcomed God’s message, they sent Peter and John to them;
15 car il n'était encore descendu sur aucun d'eux; ils se trouvaient seulement baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus.
and they, on their arrival, prayed that the Samaritans might receive the Holy Spirit.
16 Alors les deux apôtres leur imposèrent les mains, et ils reçurent le Saint-Esprit.
(As yet the Spirit had not descended on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus).
17 Lorsque Simon vit que le Saint-Esprit était donné par l'imposition des mains des apôtres, il leur offrit de l'argent,
Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 en disant: «Donnez-moi aussi ce pouvoir, que celui à qui j'imposerai les mains reçoive le Saint-Esprit.»
When Simon saw that it was through the placing of the apostles’ hands on them that the Spirit was given, he brought them a sum of money and said,
19 Pierre lui dit: «Que ton argent périsse avec toi, puisque tu as cru acquérir le don de Dieu avec de l'argent!
‘Give me also this power of yours, so that, if I place my hands on anyone, he may receive the Holy Spirit.’
20 Tu n'as aucune espèce de part à cette faveur, car ton coeur n'est pas droit devant Dieu.
‘A curse on you and on your silver,’ Peter exclaimed, ‘for thinking that God’s free gift can be bought with money!
21 Repens-toi donc de ta méchanceté, et prie le Seigneur de vouloir bien te pardonner la pensée de ton coeur;
You have no share or part in our message, for your heart is not right with God.
22 car je m'aperçois que tu es dans un fiel bien amer et dans les liens de la méchanceté.»
Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord, that, if possible, you may be forgiven for such a thought;
23 Simon repartit: «Priez vous-mêmes le Seigneur pour moi, afin qu'il ne m’arrive rien de ce que vous dites.»
for I see that you have fallen into the bitterness of envy and the fetters of sin.’
24 Pour eux, après avoir rendu témoignage, et prêché la parole du Seigneur, ils reprirent la route de Jérusalem et annoncerait l'évangile dans plusieurs villages des Samaritains.
‘Pray to the Lord for me, all of you,’ Simon answered, ‘so that none of the things you have spoken of may happen to me.’
25 Un ange du Seigneur adressa la parole à Philippe, et lui dit: «Lève-toi, et va au midi, sur la route qui descend de Jérusalem à Gaza.»
Peter and John, having borne their testimony and delivered the Lord’s message, returned to Jerusalem, telling the good news, as they went, in many Samaritan villages.
26 (Cette ville est déserte.) Il se leva et se mit en marche. Et voici, il y avait sur cette route un Éthiopien, eunuque puissant de Candace, reine d'Ethiopie, surintendant de tous ses trésors, qui était venu à Jérusalem pour adorer.
Meanwhile an angel of the Lord had said to Philip, ‘Set out on a journey southwards, along the road that runs down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ (It is now deserted).
27 Il s'en retournait, et assis sur son char, il lisait le prophète Ésaïe.
So Philip set out on a journey; and on his way he came on an official of high rank, in the service of Candace, Queen of the Abyssinians. He was her treasurer, and had been to Jerusalem to worship,
28 L'Esprit dit à Philippe: «Avance, et ne quitte pas ce char.»
and was now on his way home, sitting in his carriage and reading the prophet Isaiah.
29 Philippe, étant accouru, entendit ce seigneur qui lisait le prophète Esaïe, et il lui dit: «Comprends-tu ce que tu lis?»
The Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go up to the carriage over there and keep close to it.’
30 Il lui répondit: «Eh! comment le pourrais-je, si l'on ne me guide?» Et il invita Philippe à monter s'asseoir avec lui.
So Philip ran up, and he heard the Abyssinian reading the prophet Isaiah. ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ he asked.
31 Or, voici la teneur du passage qu'il lisait: «Il a été mené comme une brebis à la boucherie, et, comme un agneau muet devant celui qui le tond, il n'ouvre pas la bouche.
‘How can I,’ the other answered, ‘unless someone will explain it to me?’ and he invited Philip to get up and sit by his side.
32 C'est dans l’humiliation que son jugement est consommé.
The passage of scripture which he was reading was this – “Like a sheep, he was led away to slaughter, and as a lamb is dumb in the hands of its shearer, so he refrains from opening his lips.
33 Quant aux hommes de sa génération, qui les dépeindra? car on lui a ôté la vie de dessus la terre.»
He was humiliated and justice was denied him. Who will tell the story of his generation? For his life is cut off from earth.”
34 L'eunuque ayant pris la parole, dit à Philippe: «Je t'en prie, de qui le prophète parle-t-il ainsi? Est-ce de lui-même, ou de quelque autre?»
‘Now,’ said the Treasurer, addressing Philip, ‘tell me, of whom is the prophet speaking? Of himself, or of someone else?’
35 Philippe ouvrant la bouche, lui annonça Jésus en commençant par ce passage.
Then Philip began, and, taking this passage as his text, told him the good news about Jesus.
36 En poursuivant leur route, ils rencontrèrent de l'eau; l'eunuque dit: «Voici de l'eau; qu'est-ce qui empêche que je ne sois baptisé?»
Presently, as they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the Treasurer exclaimed, ‘Look! Here is water; what is to prevent my being baptized?’
37 [Philipppe lui dit: «Si tu crois de tout ton coeur cela est possible.» Il répondit: «Je crois que Jésus-Christ est le Fils de Dieu.»]
38 Et il fit arrêter le char; puis Philippe et l'eunuque descendirent tous deux dans l'eau, et Philippe le baptisa.
So he ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water – both Philip and the Treasurer – and Philip baptized him.
39 Quand ils furent sortis de l'eau. l'Esprit du Seigneur enleva Philippe: l'eunuque ne le vit plus, car, pendant qu'il continuait sa route, plein de joie,
But, when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, and the Treasurer saw no more of him; for he continued his journey with a joyful heart.
40 Philippe se trouva à Azote, d'où il alla jusqu’à Césarée, en évangélisant toutes les villes par où il passait.
But Philip was found at Ashdod, and, as he went on his way, he told the good news in all the towns through which he passed, until he came to Caesarea.
