Actes 26
1 Agrippa dit à Paul: «Tu as la parole pour ta défense.» Alors Paul, ayant fait un geste de la main, se justifia en ces termes:
Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Yoʋ have permission to speak for yoʋrself.” So Paul stretched out his hand and began to make his defense:
2 «Roi Agrippa, je m'estime heureux d'avoir aujourd'hui à me disculper devant toi de toutes les choses dont les Juifs m'accusent,
“I consider myself fortunate that it is before yoʋ, King Agrippa, that I am about to make my defense today concerning all the things of which I am being accused by the Jews,
3 parce que tu connais parfaitement toutes leurs institutions et toutes leurs controverses. Je te prie donc de m’écouter avec patience.
especially since yoʋ are acquainted with all the customs and controversies of the Jews. Therefore I beg yoʋ to listen to me patiently.
4 «Quant à la vie que j'ai menée dès mon jeune âge, tous les Juifs la connaissent, puisqu'elle s'est passée, dès le commencement de ma jeunesse, au sein de ma nation, à Jérusalem.
“All the Jews know about my manner of life from my youth up, which was spent from the beginning among my own nation in Jerusalem.
5 Ils me connaissent de longue date; ils surent, s'ils veulent en témoigner, que j'ai vécu en pharisien, selon les principes de la secte la plus rigide de notre religion:
They have known about me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived as a Pharisee.
6 maintenant, me voici mis en jugement, pour avoir espéré en la promesse que Dieu a faite à nos pères,
And now I am standing trial because of my hope in the promise God made to our fathers,
7 cette promesse, dont nos douze tribus espèrent voir l'’accomplissement en servant Dieu sans relâche, jour et nuit; eh bien! ô roi, c'est pour cette espérance que des Juifs m'accusent!
a promise that our twelve tribes hope to attain as they earnestly serve him night and day. Regarding this hope, King Agrippa, I am being accused by the Jews.
8 Pourquoi juge-ton incroyable chez vous que Dieu ressuscite les morts?
Why is it deemed unbelievable by you that God raises the dead?
9 Pour en revenir à moi, j'avais cru qu'il fallait s'opposer fortement au nom de Jésus de Nazareth,
“Indeed, I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things against the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
10 et c'est ce que j'ai fait à Jérusalem: j'ai fait enfermer dans les prisons bien des saints; j'en avais reçu le pouvoir des principaux sacrificateurs; et, lorsqu'on les mettait à mort, j'y donnais mon suffrage.
And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. I locked up many of the saints in prison by the authority I received from the chief priests, and when they were being put to death, I cast my vote against them.
11 J'allais dans toutes les synagogues et je sévissais souvent contre eux pour les forcer de blasphémer; dans mon extrême fureur, je les poursuivais jusque dans les villes étrangères.
I also punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to force them to blaspheme. And being furiously enraged against them, I pursued them even to foreign cities.
12 «C'est dans ces dispositions que je me rendais à Damas avec des pleins pouvoirs et une procuration que m'avaient donnée les principaux sacrificateurs,
“While engaged in such things, I was on my way to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,
13 lorsque je vis, ô roi, en plein midi, sur la route, une lumière venant des cieux, plus éclatante que le soleil, qui m'enveloppa de sa clarté, moi et ceux qui m'accompagnaient.
when at midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those who were traveling with me.
14 Nous tombâmes tous par terre. J'entendis une voix qui s'adressait à moi, et me disait en hébreu: «Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu? Il t'est dur de regimber contre l'aiguillon.»
When we had all fallen down to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are yoʋ persecuting me? It is hard for yoʋ to kick against the goads.’
15 Je dis: «Qui es-tu, Seigneur?» Le Seigneur répondit: «Je suis Jésus que tu persécutes:
I said, ‘Who are yoʋ, Lord?’ He said, ‘I am Jesus, whom yoʋ are persecuting.
16 mais relève-toi et te tiens sur tes pieds, car je t'ai apparu précisément pour faire de toi un serviteur et un témoin, tant des choses que tu as vues que de celles pour lesquelles je t'apparaîtrai.
But rise and stand on yoʋr feet, for I have appeared to yoʋ for this purpose, to appoint yoʋ as a servant and witness to the things yoʋ have seen and to the things in which I will appear to yoʋ.
17 Je t'ai choisi du milieu du peuple et des Gentils chez lesquels je t'envoie,
I will rescue yoʋ from yoʋr own people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending yoʋ
18 pour leur ouvrir les yeux, en sorte qu'ils passent des ténèbres à la lumière et de la puissance de Satan à Dieu, et qu'ils reçoivent par la foi en moi le pardon des péchés, et une part avec ceux qui ont été sanctifiés:
to open their eyes so that they may turn away from darkness to light, and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive remission of sins and an allotment among those who have been sanctified by faith in me.’
19 en conséquence, ô roi Agrippa, je ne résistai point à la vision céleste;
“Consequently, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,
20 mais m'adressant d'abord à ceux qui étaient à Damas et à Jérusalem, puis à ceux qui étaient dans tout le pays de Judée et aux Gentils, je leur prêchai de se repentir et de se convertir à Dieu, en faisant des oeuvres dignes de la repentance.
but first to those in Damascus and then to those in Jerusalem, to all the region of Judea and to the Gentiles, I proclaimed that they should repent and turn to God, doing works consistent with repentance.
21 «Telles sont les causes pour lesquelles les Juifs se sont saisis de moi dans le temple, et ont tâché de me tuer de leurs propres mains.
That is why the Jews seized me in the temple courts and were trying to kill me.
22 C'est donc grâce à un secours venu de Dieu, que j'ai subsisté jusqu’à ce jour, instruisant petits et grands, ne disant autre chose que ce que les prophètes et Moïse même ont prédit,
But having obtained help from God, I stand to this day testifying to both small and great, saying nothing except what the Prophets and Moses said would take place:
23 savoir que le Messie devait souffrir, et qu'étant les prémices de la résurrection des morts, il devait annoncer la lumière au peuple et aux Gentils...»
that the Christ would suffer and that, as the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”
24 Comme il parlait ainsi pour sa défense, Festus dit à haute voix: «Tu es fou, Paul, ton grand savoir tourne à la folie.»
As Paul was saying these things in his own defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Yoʋ are out of yoʋr mind, Paul. Too much learning is driving yoʋ insane!”
25 «Très excellent Festus, dit Paul, je ne suis point fou, et les paroles que je prononce sont les paroles de la vérité et du bon sens;
But Paul said, “I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking words of truth and good sense.
26 car le roi, à qui je parle en toute liberté, est instruit de ces faits; je suis persuadé qu'il n'en ignore aucun, car ils ne se sont point passés en un coin obscur.
For the king knows about these things, to whom I am speaking boldly. I am convinced that none of these things has escaped his notice at all, for this has not been done in a corner.
27 Roi Agrippa, crois-tu aux prophètes?... Je sais que tu y crois.»
Do yoʋ believe the Prophets, King Agrippa? I know that yoʋ believe.”
28 Agrippa dit à Paul: «C'est bien vite me persuader d'être chrétien.»
Agrippa said to Paul, “Do yoʋ think yoʋ can persuade me to become a Christian so quickly?”
29 Paul repartit: «Ah! plût à Dieu que, vite ou longuement, non seulement toi, mais encore tous ceux qui m'écoutent aujourd'hui, vous fussiez tels que je suis... à la réserve de ces chaînes!»
Paul said, “Whether quickly or not, I pray to God that not only yoʋ but also all who are listening to me today would become as I am, except for these chains.”
30 Le roi et le gouverneur, puis Bérénice et tous ceux qui étaient assis avec eux se levèrent;
After Paul said these things, the king stood up, along with the governor, Bernice, and those who were sitting with them.
31 et, s'étant retirés, ils se disaient entre eux: «Il n'y a rien dans la conduite de cet homme qui mérite la mort ou la prison.»
After leaving the room, they began saying to one another, “This man is doing nothing that deserves death or imprisonment.”
32 Et Agrippa dit à Festus: «Cet homme aurait pu être relâché, s'il n'en eût appelé à César.»
And Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been released if he had not appealed to Caesar.”
