Actes 18
1 Après cela, Paul partit d’Athènes, et se rendit à Corinthe.
On leaving Athens, Paul next went to Corinth.
2 Il y trouva un Juif nommé Aquilas, originaire du Pont, récemment arrivé d’Italie avec sa femme Priscille, parce que Claude avait ordonné à tous les Juifs de sortir de Rome. Il se lia avec eux;
There he met a Jew of the name of Aquila, from Pontus, who, with his wife Priscilla, had lately come from Italy, in consequence of the order which had been issued by the Emperor Claudius for all Jews to leave Rome. Paul paid them a visit,
3 et, comme il avait le même métier, il demeura chez eux et y travailla: ils étaient faiseurs de tentes.
and, since their trade was the same as his, he stayed and worked with them – their trade was tent-making.
4 Paul discourait dans la synagogue chaque sabbat, et il persuadait des Juifs et des Grecs.
Every Sabbath Paul gave addresses in the synagogue, trying to convince both Jews and Greeks.
5 Mais quand Silas et Timothée furent arrivés de la Macédoine, il se donna tout entier à la parole, attestant aux Juifs que Jésus était le Christ.
But, when Silas and Timothy had come down from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself entirely to delivering the message, earnestly maintaining before the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.
6 Les Juifs faisant alors de l’opposition et se livrant à des injures, Paul secoua ses vêtements, et leur dit: Que votre sang retombe sur votre tête! J’en suis pur. Dès maintenant, j’irai vers les païens.
However, as they set themselves against him and became abusive, Paul shook his clothes in protest and said to them, ‘Your blood be on your own heads. My conscience is clear. From this time forward I will go to the Gentiles.’
7 Et sortant de là, il entra chez un nommé Justus, homme craignant Dieu, et dont la maison était contiguë à la synagogue.
So he left, and went to the house of a certain Titius Justus, who had been accustomed to join in the worship of God, and whose house was next door to the synagogue.
8 Cependant Crispus, le chef de la synagogue, crut au Seigneur avec toute sa famille. Et plusieurs Corinthiens, qui avaient entendu Paul, crurent aussi, et furent baptisés.
Crispus, the synagogue leader, came to believe in the Lord, and so did all his household; and many of the Corinthians, as they listened to Paul, became believers in Christ and were baptized.
9 Le Seigneur dit à Paul en vision pendant la nuit: Ne crains point; mais parle, et ne te tais point,
One night the Lord said to Paul, in a vision, ‘Have no fear, but continue to speak, and refuse to be silenced;
10 Car je suis avec toi, et personne ne mettra la main sur toi pour te faire du mal: parle, car j’ai un peuple nombreux dans cette ville.
for I am with you, and no one will do you harm, for I have many people in this city.’
11 Il y demeura un an et six mois, enseignant parmi les Corinthiens la parole de Dieu.
So he settled there for a year and a half, and taught God’s message among the people.
12 Du temps que Gallion était proconsul de l’Achaïe, les Juifs se soulevèrent unanimement contre Paul, et le menèrent devant le tribunal,
While Gallio was governor of Greece, some of the Jewish leaders made a combined attack on Paul, and brought him before the Governor’s Bench,
13 en disant: Cet homme excite les gens à servir Dieu d’une manière contraire à la loi.
charging him with persuading people to worship God in a way forbidden by the Law.
14 Paul allait ouvrir la bouche, lorsque Gallion dit aux Juifs: S’il s’agissait de quelque injustice ou de quelque méchante action, je vous écouterais comme de raison, ô Juifs;
Just as Paul was on the point of speaking, Gallio said to them, ‘If this were a case of misdemeanour or some serious crime, there would be some reason for my listening patiently to you;
15 mais, s’il s’agit de discussions sur une parole, sur des noms, et sur votre loi, cela vous regarde: je ne veux pas être juge de ces choses.
but, since it is a dispute about words, and names, and your own Law, you must see to it yourselves. I do not choose to be a judge in such matters.’
16 Et il les renvoya du tribunal.
Saying this, he drove them back from the Bench.
17 Alors tous, se saisissant de Sosthène, le chef de la synagogue, le battirent devant le tribunal, sans que Gallion s’en mît en peine.
Then they all set on Sosthenes, the synagogue leader, and beat him in front of the Bench, but Gallio did not trouble himself about any of these things.
18 Paul resta encore assez longtemps à Corinthe. Ensuite il prit congé des frères, et s’embarqua pour la Syrie, avec Priscille et Aquilas, après s’être fait raser la tête à Cenchrées, car il avait fait un vœu.
Paul remained there some time after this, and then took leave of the followers, and sailed to Syria with Priscilla and Aquila, but not before his head had been shaved at Cenchreae, because he was under a vow.
19 Ils arrivèrent à Éphèse, et Paul y laissa ses compagnons. Étant entré dans la synagogue, il s’entretint avec les Juifs,
They put into Ephesus, and there Paul, leaving his companions, went into the synagogue and addressed the Jews.
20 qui le prièrent de prolonger son séjour.
When they asked him to prolong his stay, he declined, saying however,
21 Mais il n’y consentit point, et il prit congé d’eux, en disant: Il faut absolument que je célèbre la fête prochaine à Jérusalem. Je reviendrai vers vous, si Dieu le veut. Et il partit d’Éphèse.
as he took his leave, ‘I will come back again to you, please God,’ and then set sail from Ephesus.
22 Étant débarqué à Césarée, il monta à Jérusalem, et, après avoir salué l’Église, il descendit à Antioche.
On reaching Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and exchanged greetings with the church, and then went down to Antioch.
23 Lorsqu’il eut passé quelque temps à Antioche, Paul se mit en route, et parcourut successivement la Galatie et la Phrygie, fortifiant tous les disciples.
After making some stay in Antioch, he set out on a tour through the Phrygian district of Galatia, strengthening the faith of all the disciples as he went.
24 Un Juif nommé Apollos, originaire d’Alexandrie, homme éloquent et versé dans les Écritures, vint à Éphèse.
Meanwhile there had come to Ephesus an Alexandrian Jew, named Apollos, an eloquent man, who was well-versed in the scriptures.
25 Il était instruit dans la voie du Seigneur, et, fervent d’esprit, il annonçait et enseignait avec exactitude ce qui concerne Jésus, bien qu’il ne connût que le baptême de Jean.
He had been well-instructed in the Way of the Lord, and with burning zeal he spoke of, and taught carefully, the facts about Jesus, though he knew of no baptism but John’s.
26 Il se mit à parler librement dans la synagogue. Aquilas et Priscille, l’ayant entendu, le prirent avec eux, et lui exposèrent plus exactement la voie de Dieu.
This man began to speak out fearlessly in the synagogue; and when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained the Way of God to him more carefully still.
27 Comme il voulait passer en Achaïe, les frères l’y encouragèrent, et écrivirent aux disciples de le bien recevoir. Quand il fut arrivé, il se rendit, par la grâce de Dieu, très utile à ceux qui avaient cru;
When he wanted to cross to Greece, the followers furthered his plans, and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On his arrival he proved of great assistance to those who had, through the loving kindness of God, become believers in Christ,
28 Car il réfutait vivement les Juifs en public, démontrant par les Écritures que Jésus est le Christ.
for he vigorously confuted the Jews, publicly proving by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
