Proverbes 26
1 Il y a des rosées pendant la moisson, et des pluies pendant l'été; mais il n'est point de gloire pour l'insensé.
Like snow in summer and rain when the grain is being cut, so honour is not natural for the foolish.
2 Les oiseaux s'envolent et même les autruches: ainsi les vanités s'évanouissent sans arriver à rien.
As the sparrow in her wandering and the swallow in her flight, so the curse does not come without a cause.
3 Comme est le fouet au cheval, l'aiguillon à l'âne, ainsi est la verge à une nature déréglée.
A whip for the horse, a mouth-bit for the ass, and a rod for the back of the foolish.
4 Ne réponds point au fou selon sa folie, de peur que tu ne deviennes semblable à lui.
Do not give to the foolish man a foolish answer, or you will be like him.

6 Celui qui envoie ses paroles par un messager imprudent expose ses propres voies à un affront.
He who sends news by the hand of a foolish man is cutting off his feet and drinking in damage.
7 Interdis aux insensés l'usage de leurs jambes, et empêche l'iniquité de sortir de leur bouche.
The legs of one who has no power of walking are hanging loose; so is a wise saying in the mouth of the foolish.
8 Celui qui attache la pierre à sa fronde ressemble à celui qui glorifie un insensé.
Giving honour to a foolish man is like attempting to keep a stone fixed in a cord.
9 Des épines poussent dans la main d'un homme ivre, et la servitude dans la main des insensés.
Like a thorn which goes up into the hand of a man overcome by drink, so is a wise saying in the mouth of a foolish man.
10 La chair des insensés est pleine de trouble; car leurs passions se brisent dans leur choc.
Like an archer wounding all who go by, is a foolish man overcome by drink.
11 Comme le chien, lorsqu'il revient à son vomissement, inspire le dégoût; ainsi est l'insensé qui, en sa malice, retourne à son péché. Il est une honte qui conduit au mal; il est une honte pleine de gloire et de grâce.
Like a dog going back to the food which he has not been able to keep down, is the foolish man doing his foolish acts over again.
12 J'ai vu un homme qui, lui-même, s'estimait sage; cependant l'insensé a plus de confiance que lui.
Have you seen a man who seems to himself to be wise? There is more hope for the foolish than for him.
13 Le paresseux que l'on envoie en voyage dit: Il y a un lion sur le chemin et des assassins dans les rues.
The hater of work says, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.
14 Comme la porte tourne sur ses gonds, ainsi fait le paresseux sur son lit.
A door is turned on its pillar, and the hater of work on his bed.
15 Le paresseux, s'il a caché sa main sous son manteau, n'aura pas le courage de la porter à sa bouche.
The hater of work puts his hand deep into the basin: lifting it again to his mouth is a weariness to him.
16 Le paresseux se croit plus sage que celui qui rapporte une dépêche et en reçoit un salaire abondant.
The hater of work seems to himself wiser than seven men who are able to give an answer with good sense.
17 Se mettre en avant pour la querelle d'autrui, c'est comme prendre un chien par la queue.
He who gets mixed up in a fight which is not his business, is like one who takes a dog by the ears while it is going by.
18 On lance parmi les hommes des paroles comme des traits; celui qu'elles atteignent le premier succombe.
As one who is off his head sends about flaming sticks and arrows of death,
19 C'est ce qui arrive à tous ceux qui dressent des embûches à leurs amis; et si l'on s'en aperçoit, ils disent: Je l'ai fait en jouant.
So is the man who gets the better of his neighbour by deceit, and says, Am I not doing so in sport?
20 Le feu s'active, s'il y a beaucoup de bois; où il n'y a point de contradicteur, les querelles s'apaisent.
Without wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no secret talk, argument is ended.
21 Le charbon et le bois dans le foyer animent le feu; le médisant entretient le trouble des querelles.
Like breath on coals and wood on fire, so a man given to argument gets a fight started.
22 Les paroles du trompeur sont douces; mais elles blessent jusqu'au fond des entrailles.
The words of one who says evil of his neighbour secretly are like sweet food, they go down into the inner parts of the stomach.
23 L'argent donné pour tromper ne vaut pas mieux qu'un coquillage. Des lèvres frivoles cachent un mauvais cœur.
Smooth lips and an evil heart are like a vessel of earth plated with silver waste.
24 Un ennemi que l'on voit pleurer promet beaucoup des lèvres; mais en son cœur il trame quelque fraude.
With his lips the hater makes things seem what they are not, but deceit is stored up inside him;
25 Si ton ennemi te prie à grands cris, ne te laisse pas persuader; car il a sept méchancetés dans l'âme.
When he says fair words, have no belief in him; for in his heart are seven evils:
26 Celui qui dissimule sa haine cherche à tromper; mais il a beau cacher ses fautes, le monde le connaît bien.
Though his hate is covered with deceit, his sin will be seen openly before the meeting of the people.
27 Celui qui creuse une fosse pour son prochain y tombera; celui qui roule une pierre la roule sur lui-même.
He who makes a hole in the earth will himself go falling into it: and on him by whom a stone is rolled the stone will come back again.
28 Une langue trompeuse hait la vérité; une bouche indiscrète est une cause de ruines.
A false tongue has hate for those who have clean hearts, and a smooth mouth is a cause of falling.
