Job 15

1 Et Eliphaz le Thémanite répondant dit:

Then Eliphaz the Thaemanite answered and said,

2 Est-il sage celui qui, rempli d'amertume, s'exprimera comme si l'esprit d'intelligence l'inspirait,

Will a wise man give for answer a [mere] breath of wisdom? and does he fill up the pain of his belly,

3 En exhalant des plaintes inconvenantes et des discours inutiles?

reasoning with improper sayings, and with words wherein is no profit?

4 N'as-tu pas répudié toute crainte pour un tenir un tel langage devant le Seigneur?

Hast not thou moreover cast off fear, and accomplished such words before the Lord?

5 Tu es coupable en ces mots de ta bouche; tu n'as point apprécié ceux des hommes capables.

Thou art guilty by the words of thy mouth, neither hast thou discerned the words of the mighty.

6 C'est ta bouche qui t'accuse, et non moi; tes lèvres portent témoignage contre toi.

Let thine own mouth, and not me, reprove thee: and thy lips shall testify against thee.

7 Qu'y a-t-il? Es-tu le premier mortel qui ait existé? As-tu été produit avant les montagnes?

What! art thou the first man that was born? or wert thou established before the hills?

8 As-tu entendu le Seigneur commander; Dieu t'a-t-il admis en ses conseils; la sagesse réside-t-elle en toi?

Or hast thou heard the ordinance of the Lord? or has God used thee as [his] counsellor? and has wisdom come [only] to thee?

9 Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions; que comprends-tu que nous ne comprenions?

For what knowest thou, that, we know not? or what understandest thou, which we do not also?

10 L'un de nous est un vieillard plus chargé de jours que ne l'a été ton père.

Truly among us [are] both the old and very aged man, more advanced in days than thy father.

11 Tu as été châtié faiblement à cause des péchés que tu as commis, et tes paroles sont superbes et hautaines.

Thou hast been scourged for [but] few of thy sins: thou hast spoken haughtily [and] extravagantly.

12 Qu'a donc osé ton cœur et sur qui as-tu porté les yeux,

What has thine heart dared? or what have thine eyes [aimed at],

13 Pour que tu t'emportes à ce point devant le Seigneur et que tu laisses de telle paroles sortir de ta bouche?

that thou hast vented [thy] rage before the Lord, and delivered such words from [thy] mouth?

14 Qui donc, étant mortel, sera irréprochable? Qui donc étant né de la femme, sera semblable au Juste?

For who, being a mortal, [is such] that he shall be blameless? or, [who that is] born of a woman, that he should be just?

15 Puisque Dieu n'a pas confiance en ses saints et que devant lui le ciel n'est pas pur,

Forasmuch as he trusts not his saints; and the heaven is not pure before him.

16 Souffre donc qu'il considère comme impur et profane l'homme qui boit l'iniquité à pleines coupes.

Alas then, abominable and unclean is man, drinking unrighteousness as a draught.

17 Je vais te dire, écoute-moi, je vais te révéler ce que j'ai vu,

But I will tell thee, hearken to me; I will tell thee now what I have seen;

18 Ce que rapportent les sages, ce qu'ils avaient appris de leurs pères,

things wise men say, and their fathers have not hidden.

19 Les sages à qui seuls la terre a été donnée et que jamais l'étranger n'a assaillis:

To them alone the earth was given, and no stranger came upon them.

20 Les jours de l'impie se passent dans l'inquiétude; ceux du puissant de la terre sont comptés.

All the life of the ungodly [is spent] in care, and the years granted to the oppressor are numbered.

21 Il s'effraye des bruits que son oreille recueille, et lorsqu'il croit jouir d'un moment de paix, sa catastrophe est prochaine.

And his terror is in his ears: just when he seems to be at peace, his overthrow will come.

22 Qu'il ne s'imagine pas revenir des ténèbres; car déjà il est livré à des mains de fer.

Let him not trust that he shall return from darkness, for he has been already made over to the power of the sword.

23 Il est réservé à rassasier les vautours; il n'ignore pas lui-même qu'il attend sa chute; le sombre jour est près de l'emporter.

And he has been appointed to be food for vultures; and he knows within himself that he is doomed to be a carcass: and a dark day shall carry him away as with a whirlwind.

24 La nécessité, l'affliction vont le saisir et tomber sur lui, comme un chef de guerre qui combat au premier rang.

Distress also and anguish shall come upon him: he shall fall as a captain in the first rank.

25 Car il s'est attaqué au Fort; il a levé la tête avec orgueil devant le Seigneur.

For he has lifted his hands against the Lord, and he has hardened his neck against the Almighty Lord.

26 Il a couru contre Dieu l'outrage à la bouche, le dos couvert d'un épais bouclier.

And he has run against him with insolence, on the thickness of the back of his shield.

27 L'embonpoint gonflait son visage, et son ventre engraissé descendait sur ses cuisses.

For he has covered his face with his fat, and made layers of fat upon his thighs.

28 Puisse-t-il passer les nuits dans des villes désertes et se loger en des demeures inhabitées; que d'autres emportent ce que les siens auront préparé.

And let him lodge in desolate cities, and enter into houses without inhabitant: and what they have prepared, others shall carry away.

29 Qu'il n'ajoute pas à ses richesses; qu'il ne lui reste rien de ce qu'il possède; qu'il ne projette plus d'ombre sur la terre.

Neither shall he at all grow rich, nor shall his substance remain: he shall not cast a shadow upon the earth.

30 Qu'il n'échappe pas à l'obscurité, que le vent flétrisse ses bourgeons et que ses fleurs tombent.

Neither shall he in any wise escape the darkness: let the wind blast his blossom, and let his flower fall off.

31 Qu'il ne s'imagine pas pouvoir subsister, car il ne réalisera que des choses vaines.

Let him not think that he shall endure; for his end shall be vanity.

32 Sa récolte sera détruite avant la maturité; ses arbustes ne grossiront pas.

His harvest shall perish before the time, and his branch shall not flourish.

33 Qu'il soit cueilli comme un raisin vert; qu'il sèche comme une fleur d'olivier.

And let him be gathered as the unripe grape before the time, and let him fall as the blossom of the olive.

34 Car la mort porte témoignage contre l'impie; et le feu brûlera les demeures de ceux qui se laissent gagner par les présents.

For death is the witness of an ungodly man, and fire shall burn the houses of them that receive gifts.

35 La race des pervers ne concevra que des douleurs, elle n'enfantera que de vanités, et le seul fruit de ses entrailles sera la fraude.

And he shall conceive sorrows, and his end shall be vanity, and his belly shall bear deceit.
