Proverbes 1
1 Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d’Israël:
The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, the king of Israel:
2 Grâce à eux, on apprend à connaître la sagesse et la morale, à goûter le langage de la raison;
To know wisdom and instruction; to comprehend the sayings of understanding;
3 à accueillir les leçons du bon sens, la vertu, la justice et la droiture.
To accept the instruction of intelligence, righteousness, and justice, and equity;
4 Ils donnent de la sagacité aux simples, au jeune homme de l’expérience et de la réflexion.
To give to the simple prudence, to the youth knowledge and discretion.
5 En les entendant, le sage enrichira son savoir, et l’homme avisé acquerra de l’habileté.
The wise will hear, and will increase [his] information; and the man of understanding will obtain wise counsels:
6 On saisira mieux paraboles et sentences, les paroles des sages et leurs piquants aphorismes.
To understand a proverb, and a sage sentence; the words of the wise, and their riddles.
7 La crainte de l’Eternel est le principe de la connaissance; sagesse et morale excitent le dédain des sots.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: wisdom and instruction fools [alone] despise.
8 Ecoute, mon fils, les remontrances de ton père, ne délaisse pas les instructions de ta mère;
Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and cast not off the teaching of thy mother;
9 car elles forment un gracieux diadème pour ta tête et un collier pour ton cou.
For a wreath of grace are they unto thy head, and chains for thy throat.
10 Mon fils, si des criminels cherchent à t’entraîner, ne leur cède point;
My son, if sinners wish to entice thee, consent thou not.
11 s’ils disent: "Viens donc avec nous, nous allons combiner des meurtres, attenter sans motif à la vie de l’innocent;
If they should say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us watch in concealment for the uselessly innocent;
12 comme le Cheol nous les engloutirons vivants, tout entiers comme ceux qui descendent dans la tombe. (Sheol h7585)
We will swallow them up like the grave alive; and the men of integrity, as those that go down into the pit; (Sheol h7585)
13 Nous ferons main basse sur tout objet de prix; nous remplirons nos maisons de butin.
We shall find all [kinds of] precious wealth, we will fill our houses with booty;
14 Tu associeras ton sort au nôtre: nous ferons tous bourse commune,"
Thy lot must thou cast in our midst; one purse shall be for us all:
15 mon fils, ne fraye pas avec eux, écarte tes pas de leur sentier;
My son, walk not thou on the way with them; withhold thy foot from their path;
16 car leurs pieds se précipitent vers le mal, ils ont hâte de répandre le sang.
For their feet run after evil, and they make haste to shed blood.
17 Certes les filets paraissent dressés sans aucun but aux yeux de la gent ailée:
For uselessly is the net spread out before the eyes of every winged bird:
18 eux aussi en veulent à leur propre sang, et c’est à eux-mêmes qu’ils dressent un piège.
While they lie in wait for their [own] blood; they watch in concealment for their [own] lives.
19 Tel est le sort auquel court quiconque poursuit le lucre: il coûte la vie à ceux qui l’ambitionnent.
So are the paths of every one that is greedy after [unlawful] gain; it taketh away the life of those that own it.
20 La sagesse prêche dans la rue; sur les voies publiques elle élève la voix.
Wisdom crieth loudly without; in the public places she uttereth her voice;
21 Elle appelle à elle au milieu des bruyants carrefours, à l’entrée des portes. En pleine ville, elle fait entendre ses discours:
At the corner of noisy streets she calleth, at the entrances of gates; in the city she sayeth her speeches:
22 "Jusqu’à quand, niais, aimerez-vous la sottise, et vous, persifleurs, aurez-vous du goût pour la moquerie? Jusqu’à quand, insensés, haïrez-vous le savoir?
How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners take their delight in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
23 Cédez à mes remontrances; voici, je veux vous ouvrir les sources de mon esprit, vous enseigner mes paroles.
Turn back to my admonition: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
24 Puisque j’ai appelé et que vous avez refusé de m’entendre; puisque j’ai tendu la main et que personne n’y a fait attention;
Whereas I called, and ye refused; I stretched out my hand, and no man was attentive;
25 puisque vous avez repoussé tous mes conseils et que vous n’avez pas voulu de mes remontrances,
And ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would not accept my admonition:
26 en retour je rirai, moi, de votre malheur, je vous raillerai quand éclatera votre épouvante;
[Therefore] I also will truly laugh at your calamity; I will deride [you] when your terror cometh;
27 oui, quand éclatera votre épouvante, pareille à une tempête, et votre malheur, tel qu’un ouragan, quand fondront sur vous détresse et angoisse.
When your terror cometh like the tempest-cloud, and your calamity hasteneth like a whirlwind; when there come upon you distress and affliction.
28 Alors on m’appellera et je ne répondrai point, on me cherchera, mais on ne me trouvera pas.
Then will they call me, but I will not answer; they will seek me earnestly, but they shall not find me;
29 Aussi bien, ils ont détesté le savoir, ils n’ont eu aucun goût pour fa crainte de l’Eternel.
For the reason that they hated knowledge, and the fear of the Lord they did not choose;
30 Ils n’ont pas voulu de mes conseils, n’ont eu que du dédain pour toutes mes réprimandes.
[That] they would not attend to my counsel: [that] they rejected all my admonition.
31 Qu’ils se nourrissent donc du fruit de leur conduite, qu’ils se rassasient de leurs résolutions!
Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and from their own counsels shall they be satisfied.
32 Assurément, la rébellion des niais les perdra, et la fausse quiétude des sots causera leur ruine.
For the defection of the simple will slay them, and the prosperity of fools will cause them to be lost.
33 Mais quiconque m’écoute demeurera en sécurité, exempt de la crainte du malheur."
But he that hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be at rest from the dread of evil.
