Isaïe 29

1 Ah! Ariel, Ariel! Cité où résida David! Laissez l’année s’ajouter à l’année, que les fêtes accomplissent leur cycle!

Ho Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! add ye year to year; let the feasts come round:

2 Alors, je serrerai de près Ariel, il y aura des plaintes et des lamentations, et je m’associerai au deuil d’Ariel.

then will I distress Ariel, and there shall be mourning and lamentation: and she shall be unto me as Ariel.

3 Autour de toi j’établirai mon camp comme en cercle, contre toi j’élèverai des retranchements et dresserai des redoutes.

And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a fort, and I will raise siege works against thee.

4 Tu descendras si bas que tu parleras comme de dessous terre et que tes paroles affaiblies sembleront sortir de la poussière; ta voix montera de terre, pareille à celle d’un spectre, et, comme un murmure, tes paroles s’élèveront du sol.

And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust; and thy voice shall be as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

5 Mais la multitude de tes ennemis sera comme de la menue poussière; et la foule des oppresseurs comme le chaume qui passe: cela se produira soudain, en un instant.

But the multitude of thy foes shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.

6 II y sera pourvu de la part de l’Eternel-Cebaot, à l’aide du tonnerre, d’un tremblement de terre et d’un formidable fracas, à l’aide d’une tempête, d’un ouragan et des flammes d’un feu dévorant.

She shall be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.

7 Il en sera comme d’un songe et d’une vision nocturne de toute cette multitude de nations qui font campagne contre Ariel, de tous ces guerriers qui le combattent lui et ses forts et qui le serrent de près.

And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her strong hold, and that distress her, shall be as a dream, a vision of the night.

8 Tel l’homme affamé qui s’imagine, en rêvant, qu’il mange, s’il se réveille, a l’estomac creux; tel l’homme altéré de soif, qui croit, en rêve, qu’il boit, s’il se réveille, se sent épuisé et a le gosier sec, telle sera la foule de ces peuples qui vont au combat contre la montagne de Sion.

And it shall be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

9 Soyez saisis de surprise et de stupeur! Soyez fascinés et éblouis, vous qui êtes ivres et non de vin, vous qui titubez mais non par excès de boisson!

Tarry ye and wonder, take your pleasure and be blind: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.

10 Car l’Eternel a répandu sur vous un esprit de torpeur, il a fermé vos yeux les prophètes et voilé vos têtes les voyants.

For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes, the prophets; and your heads, the seers, hath he covered.

11 Aussi la révélation de tous ces événements est-elle pour vous comme les mots de ce livre scellé, qu’on présente à un homme lettré en lui disant: "Lis donc ceci!" Et lui de répondre: "Je ne puis, car le livre est scellé."

And all vision is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot, for it is sealed:

12 Et si on présente le livre à un homme illettré en lui disant: "Lis donc ceci!" Il répond: "Je ne sais pas lire."

and the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.

13 Le Seigneur a dit: "Puisque ce peuple ne me rend hommage que de bouche et ne m’honore que des lèvres, et qu’il tient son cœur éloigné de moi, et que sa piété à mon égard se borne à des préceptes d’hommes, à une leçon apprise,

And the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw nigh [unto me], and with their mouth and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which hath been taught [them]:

14 je vais continuer à faire avec ce peuple des choses surprenantes, inouïes, où la sagesse de ses sages restera court, où l’intelligence de ses gens d’esprit se voilera.

therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

15 Malheur aux artisans de trames profondes, croyant cacher leurs desseins au Seigneur, travaillant dans les ténèbres et disant: "Qui peut nous voir? Qui peut nous reconnaître?"

Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

16 O perversité! Le potier mis sur le même rang que l’argile! L’Œuvre disant de l’ouvrier: "Il ne m’a pas fabriquée!" Le vase disant de celui qui l’a créé: "II n’y entend rien!"

Ye turn things upside down! Shall the potter be counted as clay; that the thing made should say of him that made it, He made me not; or the thing framed say of him that framed it, He hath no understanding?

17 Certes, encore un peu de temps, et le Liban deviendra comme un verger et le verger pourra passer pour une forêt touffue.

Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be counted for a forest?

18 En ce jour, les sourds mêmes entendront la parole du livre et, du sein de l’obscurité et des ténèbres, les yeux des aveugles verront.

And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.

19 Et les humbles goûteront des joies abondantes en Dieu, et les plus déshérités des hommes jubileront par le Saint d’Israël.

The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

20 Car c’en sera fini des tyrans, les railleurs disparaîtront et tous les fauteurs d’iniquités seront anéantis,

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner ceaseth, and all they that watch for iniquity are cut off:

21 ceux qui, par la parole, incitent les hommes au péché, dressent des embûches à qui prêche la morale sur la place publique, et poussent le juste dans la voie du néant.

that make a man an offender in a cause, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just with a thing of nought.

22 Donc, ainsi parle l’Eternel à la maison de Jacob, lui, le libérateur d’Abraham: "Désormais, Jacob ne sera plus mortifié, désormais son visage ne doit plus pâlir.

Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale.

23 Car, lorsque ses enfants la verront, l’œuvre des mains que j’accomplirai au milieu de lui, ils rendront hommage à mon nom; ils sanctifieront le Saint de Jacob et exalteront le Dieu d’Israël.

But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name; yea, they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall stand in awe of the God of Israel.

24 Alors les esprits égarés connaîtront la sagesse, et les révoltés accepteront l’instruction."

They also that err in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmur shall learn doctrine.
