Esdras 5

1 Or, le prophète Haggaï et le prophète Zacharie, fils d’Iddo, adressèrent des prophéties aux Judéens, établis en Judée et à Jérusalem, au nom du Dieu d’Israël, qui leur en avait donné mission.

Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even to them.

2 Alors Zorobabel, fils de Chealtiël, et Yêchoua, fils de Joçadak, se mirent à reprendre la construction du temple de Dieu à Jérusalem, ayant à leurs côtés les prophètes de Dieu pour les seconder.

Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

3 Mais tout de suite, Tattenaï, gouverneur des pays en deçà du fleuve, Chetar Bozenaï et consorts vinrent les trouver, et leur parlèrent en ces termes: "Qui est-ce qui vous a délivré l’autorisation de rebâtir cette maison et de rétablir ces murailles?"

At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side of the river, and Shetharboznai, and their companions, and said thus to them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

4 En même temps ils ajoutèrent ces paroles: "Quels sont les noms des hommes qui s’occupent de cette construction?"

Then said we to them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?

5 Mais la protection de Dieu s’étendait sur les anciens des Judéens, et on ne les empêcha pas de continuer avant qu’un rapport parvînt à Darius et qu’on leur retournât une réponse écrite sur cette affaire.

But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.

6 Teneur de la missive que Tattenaï, gouverneur des pays en deçà du fleuve, Chetar Bozenaï et ses suivants, les Afarsakéens établis en deçà du fleuve, expédièrent au roi Darius.

The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side of the river, and Shetharboznai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were on this side of the river, sent to Darius the king:

7 Ils lui transmirent un compte rendu, et voici ce qui s’y trouvait consigné: "A Darius, paix parfaite!

They sent a letter to him, in which was written thus; To Darius the king, all peace.

8 Il faut que le roi sache que nous nous sommes rendus dans la province de Judée, au temple du Dieu puissant; ce temple est en train d’être construit en pierres de taille, et des poutres en bois sont posées dans les murs. Le travail se poursuit avec diligence et progresse entre leurs mains.

Be it known to the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work proceedeth quickly, and prospereth in their hands.

9 Nous avons aussitôt interrogé les Anciens parmi eux et leur avons posé cette question: "Qui est-ce qui vous a délivré l’autorisation de rebâtir cette maison et de rétablir ces murailles?"

Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to finish these walls?

10 Nous leur avons aussi demandé leurs noms pour les porter à ta connaissance, en mettant par écrit les noms de ceux qui sont à leur tête.

We asked their names also, to inform thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.

11 Voici la déclaration qu’ils nous ont faite en réponse: "Nous sommes les serviteurs du Dieu du ciel et de la terre, et nous reconstruisons la maison qui avait été bâtie, il y a de longues années de cela; c’est un grand roi d’Israël qui l’avait bâtie et achevée.

And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and set up.

12 Seulement, nos ancêtres ayant irrité le Dieu du ciel, celui-ci les livra au pouvoir de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, le Chaldéen, qui renversa ce temple et déporta la population en Babylonie.

But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.

13 Toutefois, dans la première année de Cyrus, roi de Babylone, le roi Cyrus rendit un édit prescrivant de rebâtir ce temple de Dieu.

But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.

14 En outre, les ustensiles de la maison de Dieu, en or et en argent, que Nabuchodonosor avait enlevés du sanctuaire de Jérusalem et transportés dans le sanctuaire de Babylone, le roi Cyrus les fit retirer du sanctuaire de Babylone et remettre au nommé Chêchbaçar, qu’il avait désigné comme gouverneur,

And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;

15 en lui disant: "Les ustensiles que voici, prends-les et va les déposer dans le sanctuaire de Jérusalem; que la maison de Dieu soit rebâtie sur son emplacement."

And said to him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built in its place.

16 C’Est alors que ce Chêchbaçar vint ici; il posa les fondations de la maison de Dieu à Jérusalem; depuis lors on travaille à la construction et elle n’est pas achevée!

Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.

17 Maintenant si tel est le bon plaisir du roi, qu’on recherche dans le dépôt des archives royales, là-bas, à Babylone, s’il est exact qu’un édit ait été rendu par le roi Cyrus, prescrivant de rebâtir ce temple de Dieu à Jérusalem; et que le roi nous communique sa volonté dans cette affaire!

Now therefore, if it seemeth good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so, that a decree was made by Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
