Genèse 34

1 Et Dina, fille de Léa, qu’elle avait enfantée à Jacob, sortit pour voir les filles du pays;

Dinah, the daughter whom Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the region.

2 et Sichem, fils de Hamor, le Hévien, prince du pays, la vit, et la prit, et coucha avec elle et l’humilia.

When Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the land, saw her, he grabbed her, and raped her, and humiliated her.

3 Et son âme s’attacha à Dina, fille de Jacob, et il aima la jeune fille, et parla au cœur de la jeune fille.

Then he became very attached to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young woman, and spoke kindly to the young woman.

4 Et Sichem parla à Hamor, son père, disant: Prends-moi cette jeune fille pour femme.

Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, "Get me this young woman as my wife."

5 Et Jacob apprit qu’on avait déshonoré Dina, sa fille. Or ses fils étaient aux champs avec ses troupeaux; et Jacob se tut jusqu’à ce qu’ils viennent.

Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his livestock in the field. Jacob remained silent until they came.

6 Et Hamor, père de Sichem, vint vers Jacob pour parler avec lui.

Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him.

7 Et les fils de Jacob vinrent des champs lorsqu’ils apprirent [ce qui était arrivé], et ces hommes furent affligés, et ils furent très irrités, parce qu’on avait commis une infamie en Israël, en couchant avec la fille de Jacob, ce qui ne devait point se faire.

The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had disgraced Israel by sexually assaulting Jacob's daughter; a thing that should not be done.

8 Et Hamor leur parla, disant: L’âme de Sichem, mon fils, s’est attachée à votre fille; donnez-la-lui, je vous prie, pour femme;

Hamor talked with them, saying, "The heart of my son Shechem is set on your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.

9 et alliez-vous avec nous: donnez-nous vos filles, et prenez nos filles pour vous,

Arrange marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.

10 et habitez avec nous, et le pays sera devant vous; habitez-y, et trafiquez, et ayez-y des possessions.

You may settle among us, and the land will be open to you. Live and trade in it, and acquire property in it."

11 Et Sichem dit au père et aux frères de Dina: Que je trouve grâce à vos yeux, et ce que vous me direz je le donnerai.

Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your sight, and whatever you ask of me I will give.

12 Haussez beaucoup pour moi la dot et le présent, et je donnerai selon que vous me direz; et donnez-moi la jeune fille pour femme.

Ask me for a very expensive bride price, and I will pay whatever you ask of me, but give me the young woman as a wife."

13 Et les fils de Jacob répondirent avec ruse à Sichem et à Hamor, son père, et leur parlèrent (parce qu’il avait déshonoré Dina, leur sœur);

The sons of Jacob replied deceitfully to Shechem and his father Hamor, because he had defiled their sister Dinah.

14 et ils leur dirent: Nous ne pouvons point faire cela, de donner notre sœur à un homme incirconcis, car ce serait un opprobre pour nous;

And they said to them, "We can't do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that would be a disgrace to us.

15 nous nous accorderons avec vous seulement sous cette condition, que vous soyez comme nous en circoncisant tout mâle parmi vous;

Only on this condition will we agree with you; that you become like us by circumcising all your males;

16 alors nous vous donnerons nos filles, et nous prendrons vos filles, et nous habiterons avec vous; et nous serons un seul peuple.

then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people.

17 Mais si vous ne nous écoutez pas, pour être circoncis, nous prendrons notre fille, et nous nous en irons.

But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go away."

18 Et leurs paroles furent bonnes aux yeux de Hamor, et aux yeux de Sichem, fils de Hamor.

Their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.

19 Et le jeune homme ne différa point de faire la chose; car la fille de Jacob lui agréait beaucoup, et il était plus considéré que tous ceux de la maison de son père.

The young man did not delay to do this thing, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. Now he was the most important of anyone in his father's house.

20 Et Hamor, et Sichem, son fils, vinrent à la porte de leur ville, et parlèrent aux hommes de leur ville, disant:

Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,

21 Ces hommes sont paisibles à notre égard; qu’ils habitent dans le pays, et y trafiquent: et voici, le pays est vaste devant eux; nous prendrons leurs filles pour femmes, et nous leur donnerons nos filles;

"These men are at peace with us. Therefore let them live in the land and travel in it. For look, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters as wives for ourselves, and let us give them our daughters.

22 mais ces hommes s’accorderont avec nous, pour habiter avec nous, pour devenir un même peuple, seulement sous cette condition, que tout mâle parmi nous soit circoncis, comme ils sont circoncis.

Only on this condition will the men agree to live with us as one people: that every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

23 Leurs troupeaux, et leurs biens, et toutes leurs bêtes, ne seront-ils pas à nous? Seulement accordons-nous avec eux, et ils habiteront avec nous.

Won't their livestock and their possessions and all their animals be ours? Only let us agree with them, so they will settle among us."

24 Et tous ceux qui sortaient par la porte de sa ville écoutèrent Hamor et Sichem, son fils; et tout mâle fut circoncis, tous ceux qui sortaient par la porte de sa ville.

All who went out of the gate of his city agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.

25 Et il arriva, au troisième jour, comme ils étaient dans les souffrances, que deux fils de Jacob, Siméon et Lévi, frères de Dina, prirent chacun son épée, et vinrent hardiment contre la ville, et tuèrent tous les mâles.

It happened on the third day, when they were still in pain, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword and came into the unsuspecting city and killed all the males.

26 Et ils passèrent au fil de l’épée Hamor et Sichem, son fils, et emmenèrent Dina de la maison de Sichem, et s’en allèrent.

They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with their swords and took Dinah out of Shechem's house and left.

27 Les fils de Jacob se jetèrent sur les tués et pillèrent la ville, parce qu’on avait déshonoré leur sœur;

Jacob's sons entered over the dead and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.

28 ils prirent leur menu bétail, et leur gros bétail, et leurs ânes, et ce qu’il y avait dans la ville et ce qu’il y avait aux champs,

They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and was in the field,

29 et ils emmenèrent et pillèrent tous leurs biens, et tous leurs petits enfants, et leurs femmes, et tout ce qui était dans les maisons.

and all their wealth. They took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the houses.

30 Et Jacob dit à Siméon et à Lévi: Vous m’avez troublé, en me mettant en mauvaise odeur auprès des habitants du pays, les Cananéens et les Phéréziens, et moi je n’ai qu’un petit nombre d’hommes; et ils s’assembleront contre moi, et me frapperont, et je serai détruit, moi et ma maison.

Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and attack me, and I and my household will be destroyed."

31 Et ils dirent: Traitera-t-on notre sœur comme une prostituée?

But they said, "Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?"
