Exode 1

1 Voici les noms des enfants d'Israël venus en Egypte; — ils y vinrent avec Jacob, chacun avec sa famille —:

These are the names of the sons of Israel that came into Egypt together with Jacob their father; they came in each with their whole family.

2 Ruben, Siméon, Lévi, Juda,

Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Judas,

3 Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin,

Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin,

4 Dan, Nephtali, Gad et Aser.

Dan and Nephthalim, Gad and Aser.

5 Toutes les personnes issues de Jacob étaient au nombre de soixante-dix, et Joseph était déjà en Egypte.

But Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls [born] of Jacob were seventy-five.

6 Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères et toute cette génération.

And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

7 Les enfants d'Israël furent féconds et multiplièrent; ils devinrent nombreux et très puissants, et le pays en fut rempli.

And the children of Israel increased and multiplied, and became numerous and grew exceedingly strong, and the land multiplied them.

8 Il s'éleva sur l'Egypte un nouveau roi qui ne connaissait pas Joseph.

And there arose up another king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

9 Il dit à son peuple: " Voici que les enfants d'Israël forment un peuple plus nombreux et plus puissant que nous.

And he said to his nation, Behold, the race of the children of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we:

10 Allons! Prenons des précautions contre lui, de peur qu'il ne s'accroisse, et que, une guerre survenant, il ne se joigne à nos ennemis pour nous combattre, et ne sorte ensuite du pays. "

come then, let us deal craftily with them, lest at any time they be increased, and whenever war shall happen to us, these also shall be added to our enemies, and having prevailed against us in war, they will depart out of the land.

11 Les Egyptiens établirent donc sur Israël des chefs de corvée, afin de l'accabler par des travaux pénibles. C'est ainsi qu'il bâtit des villes pour servir de magasins à Pharaon, savoir Pithom et Ramsès.

And he set over them taskmasters, who should afflict them in their works; and they built strong cities for Pharao, both Pitho, and Ramesses, and On, which is Heliopolis.

12 Mais plus on l'accablait, plus il multipliait et s'accroissait, et l'on prit en aversion les enfants d'Israël.

But as they humbled them, by so much they multiplied, and grew exceedingly strong; and the Egyptians greatly abhorred the children of Israel.

13 Les Egyptiens firent travailler les enfants d'Israël par force;

And the Egyptians tyrannized over the children of Israel by force.

14 ils leur rendaient la vie amère par de rudes travaux, mortier, briques et toute sorte de travaux des champs, tout le travail qu'ils leur imposaient avec dureté.

And they embittered their life by hard labors, in the clay and in brick-making, and all the works in the plains, according to all the works, wherein they caused them to serve with violence.

15 Le roi d'Egypte parla aussi aux sages-femmes des Hébreux, dont l'une se nommait Séphora, et l'autre Phua.

And the king of the Egyptians spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews; the name of the one was, Sepphora; and the name of the second, Phua.

16 Il leur dit: " Quand vous accoucherez les femmes des Hébreux, et que vous les verrez sur le double siège, si c'est un fils, faites-le mourir; si c'est une fille, elle peut vivre. "

And he said, When you do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and they are about to be delivered, if it be a male, kill it; but if a female, save it.

17 Mais les sages-femmes craignirent Dieu, et ne firent pas comme leur avait dit le roi d'Egypte; elles laissèrent vivre les garçons.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt appointed them; and they saved the male children alive.

18 Le roi d'Egypte fit appeler les sages-femmes et leur dit: " Pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi, et avez-vous laissé vivre les garçons? "

And the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, Why is it that you have done this thing, and saved the male children alive?

19 Les sages-femmes répondirent à Pharaon: " C'est que les femmes des Hébreux ne ressemblent pas aux Egyptiennes: elles sont vigoureuses, et elles accouchent avant l'arrivée de la sage-femme. "

And the midwives said to Pharao, The Hebrew women are not as the women of Egypt, for they are delivered before the midwives go in to them. So they bore children.

20 Et Dieu fit du bien aux sages-femmes, et le peuple devint nombreux et extrêmement fort.

And God did well to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very strong.

21 Parce que les sages-femmes avaient craint Dieu, Dieu fit prospérer leur maison.

And as the midwives feared God, they established for themselves families.

22 Alors Pharaon donna cet ordre à tout son peuple: " Vous jetterez dans le fleuve tout fils qui naîtra et vous laisserez vivre toutes les filles. "

And Pharao charged all his people, saying, Whatever male [child] shall be born to the Hebrews, cast into the river; and every female, save it alive.
