1 Samuel 8

1 Lorsque Samuel fut devenu vieux, il établit ses fils juges sur Israël.

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he appointed his sons judges to Israel;

2 Son fils premier-né se nommait Joël, et le second Abia; ils jugeaient à Bersabée.

and the name of his firstborn son was, Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah, —they were judges in Beer-sheba.

3 Les fils de Samuel ne marchèrent pas sur ses traces; ils s'en détournaient pour le gain, recevaient des présents et violaient la justice.

Howbeit his sons walked not in his ways, but stooped to extortion, —and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

4 Tous les anciens d'Israël s'assemblèrent et vinrent vers Samuel à Rama.

So then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, —and came unto Samuel, to Ramah;

5 Ils lui dirent: « Voilà que tu es vieux, et tes fils ne marchent pas sur tes traces; établis donc sur nous un roi pour nous juger, comme en ont toutes les nations. »

and said unto him—Lo! thou, art old, and, thy sons, walk not in thy ways: Now, appoint for us a king to judge us, like all the nations.

6 Ce langage déplut à Samuel parce qu'ils disaient: « Donne-nous un roi pour nous juger; » et Samuel pria Yahweh.

But the thing was displeasing in the eyes of Samuel, when they said, Give unto us a king to judge us. So Samuel prayed unto Yahweh.

7 Yahweh dit à Samuel: « Ecoute la voix du peuple dans tout ce qu'il te dira; car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils rejettent, c'est moi qu'ils rejettent, pour que je ne règne plus sur eux.

And Yahweh said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people, in all that they shall say unto thee, —for, not thee, have they rejected, but, me, have they rejected, from being king over them.

8 Comme ils ont toujours agi à mon égard depuis le jour où je les ai fait monter d'Egypte jusqu'à présent, me délaissant pour servir d'autres dieux, ainsi ils agissent envers toi.

According to all the doings which they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt, even until this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so, are they doing even unto thee.

9 Et maintenant, écoute leur voix; mais dépose témoignage contre eux, et fais-leur connaître le droit du roi qui régnera sur eux. »

Now, therefore, hearken to their voice, —save that thou, enter protest, against them, and tell them the manner of the king who will reign over them.

10 Samuel rapporta toutes les paroles de Yahweh au peuple qui lui demandait un roi.

So then Samuel spake all the words of Yahweh unto the people, who were asking of him, a king.

11 Il dit: « Voici quel sera le droit du roi qui régnera sur vous: Il prendra vos fils, et il les mettra sur son char et parmi ses cavaliers, et ils courront devant son char.

And he said, This, will be the manner of the king who will reign over you, —Your sons, will he take and appoint for himself, as his charioteers and as his horsemen, and they shall run before his chariots;

12 Il s'en fera des chefs de mille et des chefs de cinquante; il leur fera labourer ses champs, récolter ses moissons, fabriquer ses armes de guerre et l'attirail de ses chars.

and he will appoint for himself, princes of thousands, and princes of fifties, —and to plough his fields, and to reap his harvest, and to make his weapons of war, and the instruments of his chariots;

13 Il prendra vos filles pour parfumeuses, pour cuisinières et pour boulangères.

And, your daughters, will he take, —as perfumers and as cooks, and as bakers;

14 Vos champs, vos vignes et vos oliviers les meilleurs, il les prendra et les donnera à ses serviteurs.

And, your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, the best of them, will he take, and give to his servants;

15 Il prendra la dîme de vos moissons et de vos vignes, et la donnera à ses courtisans et à ses serviteurs.

And, your seed, and your vineyards, will he tithe, and give to his courtiers and to his servants;

16 Il prendra vos serviteurs et vos servantes, vos meilleurs bœufs et vos ânes, et les emploiera à ses ouvrages.

And, your men-servants, and your maidservants, and your oxen, even the goodliest, and your asses, will he take, —and put them to his work;

17 Il prendra la dîme de vos troupeaux, et vous-mêmes serez ses esclaves.

Your flocks, will he tithe, —and, ye yourselves, shall become his servants.

18 Vous crierez en ce jour-là à cause de votre roi que vous vous serez choisi, mais Yahweh ne vous exaucera pas. »

Then will ye make outcry, in that day, because of your king whom ye have chosen for yourselves, —and Yahweh will not answer you, in that day.

19 Le peuple refusa d'écouter la voix de Samuel; ils dirent: « Non, mais il y aura un roi sur nous,

But the people refused to hearken unto the voice of Samuel, —and they said—Nay! but, a king, shall be over us:

20 et nous serons, nous aussi, comme toutes les nations; notre roi nous jugera, il marchera à notre tête et conduira nos guerres. »

so shall, even we, become like all the nations, —and our king shall judge us, and go forth before us, and fight our battles.

21 Après avoir entendu toutes les paroles du peuple, Samuel les redit aux oreilles de Yahweh.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, —and spake them in the ears of Yahweh.

22 Et Yahweh dit à Samuel: « Ecoute leur voix et établis un roi sur eux. » Alors Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël: « Que chacun de vous s'en aille à sa ville. »

And Yahweh said unto Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel: Go ye, every man to his own city.
