1 Samuel 14

1 Un jour, Jonathas, fils de Saül, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: « Viens, et passons jusqu'au poste des Philistins, qui est là, de l'autre côté. » Et il n'en dit rien à son père.

One day, Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor bearer, “Come, let us go over to the Philistines' garrison on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.

2 — Saül se tenait à l'extrémité de Gabaa, sous le grenadier de Magron, et le peuple qui était avec lui était d'environ six cents hommes.

Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree that is in Migron. About six hundred men were with him,

3 Achias, fils d'Achitob, frère d'Ichabod, fils de Phinées, fils d'Héli, prêtre de Yahweh à Silo, portait l'éphod. Le peuple ne savait pas non plus que Jonathas s'en fût allé.

including Ahijah son of Ahitub (Ichabod's brother) son of Phinehas son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh, who wore an ephod. The people did not know that Jonathan was gone.

4 Entre les passages par lesquels Jonathas cherchait à arriver au poste des Philistins, il y avait une dent de rocher d'un côté et une dent de rocher de l'autre côté, l'une nommée Bosès, et l'autre nommée Séné.

On each side of the pass through which Jonathan wanted to go in order to get to the Philistines' garrison, there was a rocky cliff on one side and another rocky cliff on the other side. One rocky cliff was called Bozez and the other rocky cliff was called Seneh.

5 L'une de ces dents se dresse au nord, vis-à-vis de Machmas, et l'autre au midi, vis-à-vis de Gabée. —

One rocky cliff stood on the north in front of Michmash, and the other on the south in front of Geba.

6 Jonathas dit donc au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: « Viens, et passons jusqu'au poste de ces incirconcis. Peut-être Yahweh agira-t-il pour nous; car rien n'empêche Yahweh de sauver, soit par un nombre grand, soit par un petit nombre. »

Jonathan said to his young armor bearer, “Come, let us cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised fellows. It may be that Yahweh will work on our behalf, for nothing can stop Yahweh from saving by many or by few people.”

7 Son écuyer lui répondit: « Fais tout ce que tu as dans le cœur; va où tu voudras, me voici avec toi prêt à te suivre. »

His armor bearer replied, “Do everything that is in your heart. Go ahead, see, I am with you, to obey all your commands.”

8 Jonathas dit: « Voici, nous passerons vers ces hommes et nous nous montrerons vers eux.

Then Jonathan said, “We will cross over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them.

9 S'ils nous disent: Arrêtez, jusqu'à ce que nous venions à vous! nous resterons en place et nous ne monterons pas vers eux.

If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come over to you'—then we will stay in our place and will not cross over to them.

10 Mais s'ils disent: Montez vers nous! nous monterons, car Yahweh les a livrés entre nos mains. Cela sera pour nous le signe. »

But if they reply, 'Come over to us,' then we will cross over; because Yahweh has given them into our hand. This will be the sign to us.”

11 Ils se montrèrent tous deux au poste des Philistins, et les Philistins dirent: « Voici les Hébreux qui sortent des trous où ils s'étaient cachés. »

So both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines. The Philistines said, “Look, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves.”

12 Et les hommes du poste, s'adressant à Jonathas et à son écuyer, dirent: « Montez vers nous, et nous vous ferons savoir quelque chose. » Et Jonathas dit à son écuyer: « Monte après moi, car Yahweh les a livrés entre nos mains. »

Then the men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armor bearer, and said, “Come up to us, and we will show you something.” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Follow after me, because Yahweh has given them into the hand of Israel.”

13 Et Jonathas monta, sur les mains et sur les pieds, suivi de son écuyer. Les Philistins tombaient devant Jonathas, et son écuyer tuait derrière lui.

Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, and his armor bearer followed behind him. The Philistines were put to death before Jonathan, and his armor bearer put some to death behind him.

14 Ce premier massacre que firent Jonathas et son écuyer fut d'environ vingt hommes, sur la longueur d'un demi-sillon d'un arpent de terre.

That first attack that Jonathan and his armor bearer made, killed about twenty men within an area of half an acre.

15 L'épouvante se répandit dans le camp des Philistins, dans la campagne et dans tout le peuple; le poste aussi et l'armée de destruction furent saisis de peur; la terre trembla: c'était une terreur de Dieu.

There was a panic in the camp, in the field, and among the people. Even the garrison and the raiders panicked. The earth quaked, and there was a great panic.

16 Les sentinelles de Saül qui étaient à Gabaa de Benjamin virent comment la multitude des Philistins se dispersait et allait de côté et d'autre.

Then Saul's watchmen in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; the crowd of Philistine soldiers was dispersing, and they were going here and there.

17 Saül dit au peuple qui était avec lui: « Faites la revue et voyez qui s'en est allé d'avec nous. » Ils firent la revue, et voici qu'il n'y avait ni Jonathas ni son écuyer.

Then Saul said to the people that were with him, “Count and see who is missing from us.” When they had counted, Jonathan and his armor bearer were missing.

18 Et Saül dit à Achias: « Fais approcher l'arche de Dieu. » — Car l'arche de Dieu était en ce jour-là avec les enfants d'Israël. —

Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here,” for at that time it was with the people of Israel.

19 Pendant que Saül parlait au prêtre, le tumulte qui se faisait dans le camp des Philistins allait croissant; et Saül dit au prêtre: « Retire ta main. »

While Saul was talking to the priest, the commotion in the camp of the Philistines was continuing and increasing. Then Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”

20 Puis Saül et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, s'étant rassemblés, s'avancèrent jusqu'au lieu du combat, et voici que l'épée de l'un était tournée contre l'autre, et la confusion était extrême.

Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and went into battle. Every Philistine's sword was against his fellow countrymen, and there was very great confusion.

21 Les Hébreux qui étaient auparavant avec les Philistins, étant montés avec eux au camp tout autour, se mirent eux aussi du côté de ceux d'Israël qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathas.

Now those Hebrews who previously had been with the Philistines, and who had gone with them into the camp, even they joined with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

22 Tous les hommes d'Israël qui s'étaient cachés dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, apprenant la fuite des Philistins, s'attachèrent également à les poursuivre en combattant.

When all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hills near Ephraim heard that the Philistines were fleeing, even they chased after them in battle.

23 C'est ainsi que Yahweh délivra Israël ce jour-là. Le combat se poursuivit jusqu'à Beth-Aven.

So Yahweh saved Israel that day, and the battle passed beyond Beth Aven.

24 Les hommes d'Israël étaient à bout de forces en ce jour-là. Saül fit jurer le peuple, en disant: « Maudit soit l'homme qui prendra de la nourriture jusqu'au soir, jusqu'à ce que je me sois vengé de mes ennemis! » Et personne ne goûta de nourriture.

That day the men of Israel were distressed because Saul had put the people under an oath and said, “Cursed be the man that eats any food until evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the troops tasted food.

25 Tout le peuple vint dans la forêt, et il y avait du miel à la surface du sol.

Then all the people entered the forest and there was honey upon the ground.

26 Et le peuple entra dans la forêt, il vit du miel qui coulait; mais nul ne porta la main à la bouche, car le peuple avait crainte du serment.

When the people entered into the forest, the honey flowed, but no one put his hand to his mouth for the people feared the oath.

27 Mais Jonathas n'avait pas entendu lorsque son père avait fait faire le serment au peuple; il avança l'extrémité du bâton qu'il avait à la main et, l'ayant plongé dans un rayon de miel, il ramena sa main à sa bouche, et ses yeux furent éclaircis.

But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with an oath. He reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.

28 Alors quelqu'un du peuple, prenant la parole, lui dit: « Ton père a fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l'homme qui prendra de la nourriture aujourd'hui! Et le peuple était épuisé. »

Then one of the people, answered, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, by saying, 'Cursed be the man that eats food on this day,' even though the people are weak from hunger.”

29 Jonathas dit: « Mon père a causé le malheur du peuple. Voyez donc comme mes yeux sont clairs, parce que j'ai goûté un peu de ce miel!

Then Jonathan said, “My father has made trouble for the land. See how my eyes have become brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.

30 Ah! Si le peuple avait mangé aujourd'hui du butin trouvé chez ses ennemis, combien la défaite des Philistins n'aurait-elle pas été plus grande! »

How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the plunder from their enemies that they found? Because now the slaughter has not been great among the Philistines.”

31 Ils battirent ce jour-là les Philistins depuis Machmas jusqu'à Ajalon, et le peuple était tout défaillant.

They attacked the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. The people were very weary.

32 Le peuple se jeta sur le butin et, ayant pris des brebis, des bœufs et des veaux, il les égorgèrent sur la terre, et le peuple en mangea avec le sang.

The people rushed greedily on the plunder and took sheep, oxen and calves, and killed them on the ground. The people ate them with the blood.

33 On le rapporta à Saül, en disant: « Voici que le peuple pèche contre Yahweh, en mangeant la chair avec le sang. » Saül dit: « Vous avez commis une infidélité, roulez à l'instant vers moi une grande pierre. »

Then they told Saul, “Look, the people are sinning against Yahweh by eating with the blood.” Saul said, “You have acted unfaithfully. Now, roll a big stone here to me.”

34 Et Saül dit: « Dispersez-vous parmi le peuple, et dites-leur: Amenez-moi chacun votre bœuf et chacun votre brebis; égorgez-les ici; vous en mangerez alors et vous ne pécherez pas contre Yahweh en mangeant avec le sang. » Et chacun parmi tout le peuple amena pendant la nuit son bœuf par la main, et l'égorgea là.

Saul said, “Go out among the people, and tell them, 'Let every man bring his ox and his sheep, kill them here, and eat. Do not sin against Yahweh by eating with the blood.'” So each of the people brought his own ox with him that night and killed it there.

35 Saül bâtit un autel à Yahweh; ce fut le premier autel qu'il éleva pour Yahweh.

Saul built an altar to Yahweh, which was the first altar that he built to Yahweh.

36 Saül dit: « Descendons, pendant qu'il fait nuit, à la poursuite des Philistins, pillons les jusqu'à ce que luise le matin, et n'en laissons pas survivre un seul. » Ils dirent: « Fais tout ce qui te semblera bon. » Mais le grand prêtre dit: « Approchons-nous ici de Dieu. »

Then Saul said, “Let us pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them until morning; let us not leave one of them alive.” They replied, “Do whatever seems good to you.” But the priest said, “Let us approach God here.”

37 Et Saül consulta Dieu: « Descendrai-je à la poursuite des Philistins? Les livrerez-vous entre les mains d'Israël? » Et Yahweh ne lui donna pas de réponse ce jour-là.

Saul asked God, “Should I pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?” But God did not answer him that day.

38 Saül dit: « Approchez ici, vous tous, chefs du peuple; recherchez et voyez quel est le péché qui a été commis aujourd'hui.

Then Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the people; learn and see how this sin has happened today.

39 Car, aussi vrai que Yahweh, le libérateur d'Israël, est vivant, le péché fût-il sur mon fils Jonathas, il mourra. » Et dans tout le peuple personne ne lui répondit.

For, as Yahweh lives, who saves Israel, even if it is in Jonathan my son, he will surely die.” But none of the men among all the people answered him.

40 Il dit à tout Israël: « Vous, mettez-vous d'un côté, et moi et mon fils Jonathas nous serons de l'autre côté. » Et le peuple dit à Saül: « Fais ce qui te semblera bon. »

Then he said to all Israel, “You must stand on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other.” The people said to Saul, “Do what seems good to you.”

41 Saül dit à Yahweh: « Dieu d'Israël, fais connaître la vérité! » Jonathas et Saül furent désignés, et le peuple fut libéré.

Saul said, “Yahweh, God of Israel! If this sin has been committed by me or by my son Jonathan, then, Yahweh, God of Israel, give the Urim. But if this sin has been committed by your people Israel, give the Thummim.” Then Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, but the army was exonerated.

42 Alors Saül dit: « Jetez le sort entre moi et Jonathas, mon fils. » Et Jonathas fut désigné.

Then Saul said, “Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son.” Then Jonathan was taken by lot.

43 Saül dit à Jonathas: « Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait. » Jonathas le lui déclara, en disant: « J'ai goûté un peu de miel, avec l'extrémité du bâton que j'avais à la main; me voici, je mourrai! »

Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.” Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey with the end of the rod that was in my hand. Here I am; I will die.”

44 Et Saül dit: « Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne meurs pas, Jonathas! »

Saul said, “God do so and more also to me, if you do not die, Jonathan.”

45 Le peuple dit à Saül: « Jonathas mourrait donc, lui qui a opéré cette grande délivrance en Israël? Loin de nous! Yahweh est vivant! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de sa tête car c'est avec Dieu qu'il a agi en ce jour. » C'est ainsi que le peuple sauva Jonathas, et il ne mourut point.

Then the people said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die, who has accomplished this great victory for Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, not one hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he has worked with God today.” So the people rescued Jonathan so that he did not die.

46 Saül monta à Gabaa, sans poursuivre les Philistins et les Philistins regagnèrent leur pays.

Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.

47 Lorsque Saül eut pris possession de la royauté sur Israël, il fit la guerre aux alentours à tous ses ennemis, à Moab, aux enfants, d'Ammon, à Edom, aux rois de Soba et aux Philistins, et, partout où il se tournait, il l'emportait.

When Saul began to rule over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side. He fought against Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.

48 Il fit des exploits, battit Amalec et délivra Israël de la main de ceux qui le pillaient.

He acted with great courage and defeated the Amalekites. He rescued Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.

49 Les fils de Saül étaient Jonathas, Jessui et Melchisua; ses deux filles s'appelaient, l'aînée Mérob, et la plus jeune Michol.

The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malki-Shua. The names of his two daughters were Merab, the firstborn, and Michal, the younger.

50 Le nom de la femme de Saül était Achinoam, fille d'Achimaas. Le nom du chef de son armée était Abner, fils de Ner, oncle de Saül.

The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam; she was the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the captain of his army was Abner son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

51 Cis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d'Abner, étaient fils d'Abiel.

Kish was Saul's father; and Ner, the father of Abner, was the son of Abiel.

52 La guerre fut acharnée contre les Philistins pendant tous les jours de Saül, et quand Saül apercevait un homme fort et vaillant, il l'attachait à son service.

There was hard fighting against the Philistines all the days of Saul. When Saul saw any mighty man, or any valiant man, he attached him to himself.
