1 Rois 20
1 Benhadad, roi de Syrie, rassembla toute son armée; il y avait avec lui trente-deux rois, des chevaux et des chars. Il monta et, ayant mis le siège devant Samarie, il l'attaqua.
Ben Hadad the king of Aram gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
2 Il envoya dans la ville des messagers à Achab, roi d'Israël,
He sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said to him, "Thus says Ben Hadad,
3 pour lui dire: « Ainsi dit Benhadad: Ton argent et ton or sont à moi, tes femmes et tes plus beaux enfants sont à moi. »
'Your silver and your gold is mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.'"
4 Le roi d'Israël répondit: « Comme tu le dis, ô roi, mon seigneur; je suis à toi avec tout ce que j'ai. »
The king of Israel answered, "It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have."
5 Les messagers revinrent et dirent: « Ainsi dit Benhadad: Je t'ai envoyé dire: Tu me livreras ton argent et ton or, tes femmes et tes enfants.
The messengers came again, and said, "Ben Hadad says, 'I sent indeed to you, saying, "You shall deliver me your silver, and your gold, and your wives, and your children;
6 Or quand demain, à cette heure, j'enverrai mes serviteurs chez toi, ils fouilleront ta maison et les maisons de tes serviteurs, et tout ce qui est précieux à tes yeux, ils le prendront de leurs mains et ils l'emporteront. »
but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house, and the houses of your servants; and it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in their eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away."'"
7 Le roi d'Israël convoqua tous les anciens du pays, et il dit: « Reconnaissez et voyez que cet homme veut notre malheur; car il m'a envoyé demander mes femmes et mes enfants, mon argent et mon or, et je ne lui avais pas refusé.
Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, "Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I did not deny him."
8 Tous les anciens et tout le peuple dirent à Achab: « Ne l'écoute pas et ne consens pas. »
All the elders and all the people said to him, "Do not listen, neither consent."
9 Achab répondit donc aux messagers de Benhadad: Dites à mon seigneur le roi: Tout ce que tu as envoyé demander à ton serviteur la première fois, je le ferai, mais pour cette chose, je ne puis la faire. » Les messagers s'en allèrent, et lui portèrent la réponse.
Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, "Tell my lord the king, 'All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do; but this thing I cannot do.'" The messengers departed, and brought him back the message.
10 Benhadad envoya dire à Achab: « Que les dieux me traitent dans toute leur rigueur, si la poussière de Samarie suffit pour remplir le creux de la main de tout le peuple qui me suit! »
Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, "The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me."
11 Et le roi d'Israël répondit et dit: « Dites-lui: Que celui qui revêt son armure ne se glorifie pas comme celui qui la dépose! »
The king of Israel answered, "Tell him, 'Do not let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.'"
12 Lorsque Benhadad entendit cette réponse, — il était à boire avec les rois sous les huttes, — il dit à ses serviteurs: « Prenez vos positions! » Et ils prirent leurs positions contre la ville.
It happened, when Ben Hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said to his servants, "Prepare to attack." They prepared to attack the city.
13 Mais voici qu'un prophète, s'approchant d'Achab, roi d'Israël, lui dit: « Ainsi dit Yahweh: Tu vois toute cette grande multitude? Voici que je vais la livrer aujourd'hui entre tes mains, afin que tu saches que je suis Yahweh. »
Look, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'Have you seen all this great multitude? Look, I will deliver it into your hand this day; and you shall know that I am the LORD.'"
14 Achab dit: « Par qui? » Et il répondit: « Ainsi dit Yahweh: Par les serviteurs des chefs des provinces. » Achab dit: « Qui engagera le combat? » Et il répondit: « Toi. »
Ahab said, "By whom?" He said, "Thus says the LORD, 'By the young men of the governors of the districts.'" Then he said, "Who shall begin the battle?" He answered, "You."
15 Alors Achab passa en revue les serviteurs des chefs des provinces, et il s'en trouva deux cent trente-deux; après eux, il passa en revue tout le peuple, tous les enfants d'Israël: ils étaient sept mille.
Then he mustered the young men of the governors of the districts, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16 Ils firent une sortie à midi, pendant que Benhadad buvait et s'enivrait sous les huttes, lui et les trente-deux rois, ses auxiliaires.
They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him.
17 Les serviteurs des chefs des provinces étaient sortis les premiers. Benhadad envoya aux informations, et on lui fit ce rapport: « Des hommes sont sortis de Samarie. »
the young men of the governors of the districts went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, "Men are coming out from Samaria."
18 Il dit: « S'ils sortent pour la paix, prenez-les vivants; s'ils sortent pour le combat, prenez-les vivants. »
He said, "If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive."
19 Lorsque les serviteurs des chefs des provinces, ainsi que l'armée qui venait après eux, furent sortis de la ville,
So these went out of the city, the young men of the governors of the districts, and the army which followed them.
20 ils frappèrent chacun son homme, et les Syriens prirent la fuite. Israël les poursuivit. Benhadad, roi de Syrie, se sauva sur un cheval, avec des cavaliers.
They each killed his man. The Arameans fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Aram escaped on a horse with horsemen.
21 Le roi d'Israël sortit, frappa les chevaux et les chars, et fit éprouver aux Syriens une grande défaite.
The king of Israel went out, and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans with a great slaughter.
22 Alors le prophète s'approcha du roi d'Israël et lui dit: « Va, fortifie-toi, examine et vois ce que tu as à faire; car, au retour de l'année, le roi de Syrie montera contre toi. »
The prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said to him, "Go, strengthen yourself, and mark, and see what you do; for at the return of the year the king of Aram will come up against you."
23 Les serviteurs du roi de Syrie lui dirent: « Leurs dieux sont des dieux de montagnes; c'est pourquoi ils ont été plus forts que nous; mais combattons-les dans la plaine, et sûrement nous serons plus forts qu'eux.
The servants of the king of Aram said to him, "Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24 Fais encore ceci: ôte chacun des rois de son poste, et mets des chefs à leur place,
Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place.
25 et forme-toi une armée égale à celle que tu as perdue, avec autant de chevaux et autant de chariots. Nous les combattrons alors dans la plaine, et sûrement nous serons plus forts qu'eux. » Il écouta leur parole et fit ainsi.
Muster an army, like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than them." He listened to their voice, and did so.
26 Au retour de l'année, Benhadad passa les Syriens en revue, et monta vers Aphec pour combattre Israël.
It happened at the return of the year, that Ben Hadad mustered the Arameans, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27 Les enfants d'Israël furent aussi passés en revue; ils reçurent des vivres et ils s'avancèrent à la rencontre des Syriens. Les enfants d'Israël campèrent vis-à-vis d'eux, semblables à deux petits troupeaux de chèvres, tandis que les Syriens remplissaient le pays.
The children of Israel were mustered, and were provisioned, and went against them. The children of Israel camped before them like two little flocks of young goats; but the Arameans filled the country.
28 Un homme de Dieu s'approcha et dit au roi d'Israël: « Ainsi dit Yahweh: Parce que les Syriens ont dit: Yahweh est un dieu des montagnes, et non un dieu des vallées, je livrerai entre tes mains toute cette grande multitude, et vous saurez que je suis Yahweh. »
A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because the Arameans have said, "The LORD is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys"; therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD.'"
29 Ils campèrent sept jours en face les uns des autres. Le septième jour, le combat s'engagea, et les enfants d'Israël tuèrent aux Syriens cent mille hommes de pied en un jour.
They camped one over against the other seven days. So it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Arameans in one day.
30 Le reste s'enfuit à Aphec, à la ville, et la muraille tomba sur vingt-sept mille hommes qui restaient. Benhadad s'était enfui et il allait dans la ville de chambre en chambre.
But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner room.
31 Ses serviteurs lui dirent: « Voici, nous avons appris que les rois de la maison d'Israël sont des rois cléments; permets que nous mettions des sacs sur nos reins et des cordes à nos têtes, et que nous sortions vers le roi d'Israël: peut-être qu'il te laissera la vie. »
His servants said to him, "See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies, and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life."
32 Ils se mirent des sacs sur les reins et des cordes à la tête et, s'étant rendus auprès du roi d'Israël, ils dirent: « Ton serviteur Benhadad dit: Daigne me laisser la vie! » Achab répondit: « Est-il encore vivant? Il est mon frère. »
So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, "Your servant Ben Hadad says, 'Please let me live.'" He said, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."
33 Ces hommes tirèrent de là un heureux augure, et se hâtant de lui ravir cette parole, ils dirent: « Benhadad est ton frère. » Et il dit: « Allez le prendre. » Benhadad vint vers lui, et Achab le fit monter sur son char.
Now the men were looking for an omen, and they seized upon it from him, and they said, "Ben Hadad is your brother." Then he said, "Go, bring him." Then Ben Hadad came out to him, and he had him come up into the chariot.
34 Benhadad lui dit: « Je te rendrai les villes que mon père a prises à ton père, et tu établiras pour toi des rues à Damas, comme mon père en avait établi à Samarie. » Et Achab répondit: « Et moi, je te laisserai aller moyennant un traité d'alliance. » Il conclut une alliance avec lui, et le laissa aller.
Ben Hadad said to him, "The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria." "I," said Ahab, "will let you go with this covenant." So he made a covenant with him, and let him go.
35 Un des fils des prophètes dit à son compagnon, dans la parole de Yahweh: « Frappe-moi, je te prie. » Mais cet homme refusa de le frapper.
A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by the word of the LORD, "Please strike me." The man refused to strike him.
36 Et il lui dit: « Parce que tu n'as pas écouté la voix de Yahweh, voici, dès que tu m'auras quitté, le lion te frappera. » Et l'homme s'en alla d'auprès de lui, et le lion, l'ayant rencontré, le frappa.
Then he said to him, "Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, look, as soon as you are departed from me, a lion shall kill you." As soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and killed him.
37 Il trouva un autre homme, et il lui dit: « Frappe-moi, je te prie. » Cet homme le frappa et le blessa.
Then he found another man, and said, "Please strike me." The man struck him, smiting and wounding him.
38 Alors le prophète alla se placer sur le chemin du roi, et il se déguisa avec un bandeau sur ses yeux.
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.
39 Lorsque le roi passa, il cria vers le roi, en disant: « Ton serviteur était sorti au milieu du combat; voici qu'un homme s'éloigna et m'amena un homme en disant: Garde cet homme. S'il vient à s'échapper, ta vie sera pour sa vie, ou tu paieras un talent d'argent.
As the king passed by, he cried to the king; and he said, "Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and look, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, 'Guard this man. If by any means he be missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.'
40 Et pendant que ton serviteur agissait çà et là, l'homme disparut. » Le roi d'Israël lui dit: « C'est là ton jugement; tu l'as rendu toi-même. »
As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone." The king of Israel said to him, "So your judgment shall be; you yourself have decided it."
41 Aussitôt le prophète ôta le bandeau de ses yeux et le roi d'Israël le reconnut pour un des prophètes.
He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was of the prophets.
42 Alors il dit au roi: « Ainsi dit Yahweh: Parce que tu as laissé échapper de tes mains l'homme que j'avais voué à l'anathème, ta vie sera pour sa vie et ton peuple pour son peuple. »
He said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.'"
43 Le roi d'Israël s'en alla chez lui, sombre et irrité, et il arriva à Samarie.
The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.
