Jérémie 29
1 Voici le texte de la lettre que Jérémie le prophète envoya de Jérusalem au reste des anciens en captivité, aux prêtres, aux prophètes et à tout le peuple que Nabuchodonosor avait déporté de Jérusalem à Babylone,
Now these, are the, words of the letter which Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem, —unto the residue of the elders of the captivity, and unto the priests and unto the prophets and unto all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;
2 après que furent sortis de Jérusalem le roi Jéchonias, la reine-mère, les eunuques, les princes de Juda et de Jérusalem, les charpentiers et les serruriers:
after that Jeconiah the king and the queen-mother and the eunuchs the princes of Judah and Jerusalem and the craftsmen and the smiths, had gone forth from Jerusalem; —
3 il l’envoya par l’intermédiaire d’Élasa, fils de Saphan, et de Gamarias, fils d’Helcias, que Sédécias, roi de Juda, avait député à Babylone auprès de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone. Elle disait:
by the hand of Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, saying: —
4 Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d’Israël, à tous les captifs que j’ai exilés de Jérusalem à Babylone:
Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, Unto all the captivity whom I have suffered to be carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon:
5 Bâtissez des maisons et habitez-les; plantez des jardins et mangez-en les fruits.
Build ye houses and dwell in them, —And plant ye gardens and eat the fruit thereof;
6 Prenez des femmes, et engendrez des fils et des filles; prenez des femmes pour vos fils, et donnez à vos filles des maris, et qu’elles enfantent des fils et des filles; multipliez-vous dans ce pays, et ne diminuez pas.
Take ye wives and beget sons and daughters, And take wives, for your sons, and, your daughters, give ye to husbands, That they may bear sons and daughters, —And so become ye many there and do not become few;
7 Recherchez le bien de la ville où je vous ai menés en captivité, et priez Yahweh pour elle, car son bien sera votre bien.
And seek the welfare of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray for her unto Yahweh, —For in her welfare, shall ye have welfare.
8 Car ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Ne vous laissez pas séduire par vos prophètes qui sont au milieu de vous, ni par vos devins, et n’écoutez pas les songes que vous vous donnez.
For Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts God of Israel, Let not your prophets that are in your midst nor your diviners beguile you, —Neither hearken ye unto your dreams which ye are dreaming;
9 Car c’est faussement qu’ils vous prophétisent en mon nom; je ne les ai pas envoyés, — oracle de Yahweh.
For falsely, are they prophesying unto you in my name, —I have not sent them, Declareth Yahweh.
10 Car ainsi parle Yahweh: C’est lorsque soixante-dix ans se seront accomplis pour Babylone que je vous visiterai et que j’exécuterai pour vous ma bonne parole, en vous ramenant en ce lieu.
For, thus, saith Yahweh, —That as soon as there are fulfilled to Babylon seventy years, I will visit you, —and establish for you my good word, by causing you to return unto this place.
11 Car moi, je connais les pensées que j’ai pour vous, — oracle de Yahweh, — pensées de paix, et non de malheur, afin de vous donner un avenir et de l’espérance.
For, I, know the plans which I am planning for you Declareth Yahweh, —Plans of welfare and not of calamity, To give you a future and a hope.
12 Vous m’appellerez, et vous viendrez, et vous me prierez, et je vous écouterai.
So shall ye call upon me, —And go and pray unto me, —And I will hearken unto you;
13 Vous me chercherez et vous me trouverez, parce que vous me chercherez de tout votre cœur.
So shall ye seek me and find, For ye will enquire after me with all your heart;
14 Et je me laisserai trouver par vous, — oracle de Yahweh; je ramènerai vos captifs, et je vous rassemblerai de toutes les nations et de tous les lieux où je vous aurai chassés, — oracle de Yahweh, — et je vous ramènerai au lieu d’où je vous ai exilés.
And I will be found of you, Declareth Yahweh, And will turn back your captivity, And will gather you out of all the nations and out of all the places whither I have driven you, Declareth Yahweh, And will bring you back into the place whence I had caused you to be carried away captive:
15 Mais, dites-vous, Yahweh nous a suscité des prophètes à Babylone.
Because ye have said, —Yahweh hath raised us up prophets in Babylon.
16 Ainsi parle Yahweh touchant le roi qui est assis sur le trône de David, tout le peuple qui habite dans cette ville et vos frères qui ne sont pas partis avec vous en exil:
For, thus, saith Yahweh Against the king who is sitting on the throne of David, and Against all the people who are remaining in this city, —your brethren who have not gone forth with you into captivity:
17 Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées: Je vais envoyer contre eux l’épée, la famine et la peste; je les traiterai comme les figues détestables dont on ne peut manger, tant elles sont mauvaises.
Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, Behold me! sending upon them sword famine, and pestilence, —So will I make them like the horrid figs, that cannot be eaten for badness;
18 Je les poursuivrai avec l’épée, la famine et la peste, et j’en ferai un objet de terreur dans tous les royaumes de la terre, un objet de malédiction, de stupeur, de moquerie, d’opprobre, parmi toutes les nations où je les aurai chassés:
Therefore will I pursue them with sword with famine and with pestilence, —And will make them a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth A curse and an astonishment and a hissing and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:
19 parce qu’ils n’ont pas écouté mes paroles, — oracle de Yahweh, — alors que je leur ai envoyé mes serviteurs les prophètes, les envoyant dès le matin; et vous n’avez pas écouté, — oracle de Yahweh.
Because they hearkened not unto my words Declareth Yahweh, —which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, betimes, sending them yet hearkened they not Declareth Yahweh.
20 Vous donc, écoutez la parole de Yahweh, vous tous captifs que j’ai envoyés de Jérusalem à Babylone!
Ye, therefore, hear ye the word of Yahweh, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon:
21 Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d’Israël, au sujet d’Achab, fils de Colias, et de Sédécias, fils de Maasias, qui vous prophétisent en mon nom des mensonges: Voici que je les livre aux mains de Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, et il les fera mourir sous vos yeux.
Thus, saith Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel Concerning Ahab son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying to you in my name, a falsehood, Behold me! delivering them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he will smite them before your eyes:
22 On tirera d’eux une formule de malédiction parmi tous les captifs de Juda qui sont à Babylone, en disant: « Que Yahweh te traite comme Sédécias et Achab, que le roi de Babylone a fait rôtir au feu! »
So shall there be taken up—from them—a curse, by all of the captivity of Judah who are in Babylon saying, —Yahweh make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, Whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire!
23 parce qu’ils ont fait une infamie en Israël, en commettant l’adultère avec les femmes de leur prochain et en prononçant en mon nom des mensonges, ce que je ne leur avais pas commandé; et moi je le sais, et je suis témoin, — oracle de Yahweh.
Because they have committed vileness in Israel And have committed adultery with the wives of their neighbours, And have spoken as a word in my name a falsehood, which I commanded them not, —And, I, am one who knoweth—and a witness Declareth Yahweh.
24 Et à Séméias, le Néhélamite. tu diras:
Also unto Shemaiah the Nehelamite, shalt thou speak, saying:
25 Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d’Israël: Tu as envoyé en ton nom à tout le peuple qui est à Jérusalem, au prêtre Sophonie, fils de Maasias, et à tous les prêtres des lettres pour leur dire:
Thus, speaketh Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel, saying, —Because, thou, hast sent in, thine own name, letters, unto all the people who are in Jerusalem, and unto Zephaniah son, of Maaseiah the priest, and unto all the priests saying:
26 Yahweh t’a établi prêtre à la place du prêtre Joïada, afin qu’il y ait des surveillants dans la maison de Yahweh pour tout homme qui fait l’inspiré et le prophète, afin que tu le mettes aux ceps ou au carcan.
Yahweh, hath made thee priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be deputies in the house of Yahweh, to any man who is raving and prophesying, so shalt thou put him into the stocks and into the pillory:
27 Et maintenant, pourquoi donc n’as-tu pas réprimé Jérémie d’Anathoth qui vous prophétise?
Now, therefore, why, hast thou not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who is prophesying unto you?
28 Grâce à cela, il a pu nous envoyer dire à Babylone: « Ce sera long; bâtissez des maisons et habitez-les; plantez des jardins et mangez-en les fruits. »
For, on this account, hath he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, —’Tis, long! Build ye houses and dwell in them, And plant gardens and eat the fruit thereof.
29 Sophonie le prêtre lu cette lettre devant Jérémie le prophète.
And Zephaniah the priest hath read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet,
30 Et la parole de Yahweh fut adressée à Jérémie en ces termes:
Therefore hath the word of Yahweh come unto Jeremiah, saying:
31 Envoie dire à tous les exilés: Ainsi parle Yahweh au sujet de Séméias, le Néhélamite: Parce que Séméias vous a prophétisé sans que je l’aie envoyé et qu’il vous a fait mettre votre confiance en un mensonge,
Send thou unto all them of the captivity, saying, Thus, saith Yahweh, Concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite, —Because Shemaiah, hath prophesied to you, when, I, had not sent him, And hath caused you to trust in falsehood,
32 à cause de cela, ainsi parle Yahweh: Je visiterai Séméias, le Néhélamite, et sa postérité; il n’aura personne des siens qui habite au milieu de son peuple, et il ne verra pas le bien que je ferai à mon peuple, — oracle de Yahweh — car il a prêché la révolte contre Yahweh.
Therefore Thus, saith Yahweh, —Behold me! bringing punishment upon Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and upon his seed, He shall have no man to dwell in the midst of this people, Nor shall he see the good that I am about to do for my people, Declareth Yahweh; Because revolt, hath he spoken against Yahweh.
