Deutéronome 8

1 Vous aurez soin de mettre en pratique tous les commandements que je vous prescris aujourd’hui, afin que vous viviez, que vous multipliiez, que vous entriez et que vous preniez possession du pays que Yahweh a juré de donner à vos pères.

You must keep all the commands that I am giving you today, so that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that Yahweh swore to your fathers.

2 Tu te souviendras de tout le chemin par lequel Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a fait marcher pendant ces quarante années dans le désert, afin de t’humilier, et de t’éprouver, pour connaître les sentiments de ton cœur, si tu garderas ou non ses commandements.

You will call to mind all the ways that Yahweh your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order that he might humble you, that he might test you to know what was in your heart, as to whether you would keep his commandments or not.

3 Il t’a humilié, il t’a fait avoir faim, et il t’a nourri de la manne, que tu ne connaissais pas et que n’avaient pas connue tes pères, afin de t’apprendre que l’homme ne vit pas de pain seulement, mais que l’homme vit de tout ce qui sort de la bouche de Dieu.

He humbled you, and made you hunger, and fed you with manna, which you had not known and which your fathers had not known. He did that to make you know that it is not by bread alone that people live; rather, it is by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of Yahweh that people live.

4 Ton vêtement ne s’est pas usé sur toi, et ton pied ne s’est pas enflé, pendant ces quarante années:

Your clothing did not wear out and fall off you, and your feet did not swell up during those forty years.

5 afin que tu reconnaisses en ton cœur que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’instruit, comme un homme instruit son enfant,

You will think about in your heart, how, as a man disciplines his son, so Yahweh your God disciplines you.

6 et que tu observes les commandements de Yahweh, ton Dieu, en marchant dans ses voies et en le craignant.

You will keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, so that you might walk in his ways and honor him.

7 Car Yahweh, ton Dieu, va te faire entrer dans un bon pays, pays de torrents, de sources et d’eaux profondes, qui jaillissent dans les vallées et les montagnes;

For Yahweh your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out into valleys and among hills;

8 pays de froment, d’orge, de vignes, de figuiers et de grenadiers; pays d’oliviers, d’huile et de miel;

a land of wheat and barley, of vines, fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive trees and honey.

9 pays où tu mangeras du pain en abondance, où tu ne manqueras de rien; pays dont les pierres sont du fer, et des montagnes duquel tu tireras l’airain.

It is a land in which you will eat bread without lack, and where you will not go without anything; a land whose stones are made of iron, and out of whose hills you may dig copper.

10 Tu mangeras et te rassasieras, et tu béniras Yahweh, ton Dieu, pour le bon pays qu’il t’a donné.

You will eat and be full, and you will bless Yahweh your God for the good land that he has given you.

11 Garde-toi d’oublier Yahweh, ton Dieu, négligeant d’observer ses commandements, ses ordonnances et ses lois que je te prescris aujourd’hui,

Be careful that you do not forget Yahweh your God, and that you do not neglect his commandments, his ordinances, and his statutes that I am commanding you today,

12 de peur que, quand tu mangeras et te rassasieras, que tu bâtiras et habiteras de belles maisons,

otherwise, when you eat and are full, and when you build good houses and live in them, your heart will be lifted up.

13 que tu verras se multiplier tes bœufs et tes brebis. S’augmenter ton argent, ton or, et s’augmenter tous tes biens,

Be careful when your herds and flocks multiply and when your silver and gold increase, and all that you have is multiplied,

14 ton cœur ne s’élève et que tu n’oublies Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui t’a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de servitude;

then your heart becomes lifted up and you forget Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

15 qui t’a conduit dans ce grand et affreux désert, où il y a des serpents brûlants et des scorpions, dans des lieux arides et sans eau, et qui a fait jaillir pour toi de l’eau du rocher le plus dur;

Do not forget him who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the rock of flint.

16 qui t’a donné à manger dans le désert une manne inconnue à tes pères, afin de t’humilier et de t’éprouver, pour te faire ensuite du bien;

He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your ancestors had never known, so that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end,

17 et que tu ne dises en ton cœur; « C’est ma force et la vigueur de ma main qui m’ont procuré ces richesses. »

but you may say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand acquired all this wealth.'

18 Souviens-toi de Yahweh, ton Dieu, car c’est lui qui te donne de la force pour les acquérir, afin d’accomplir, comme tu le vois aujourd’hui, son alliance qu’il a jurée à tes pères.

But you will call to mind Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you the power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is today.

19 Si, oubliant Yahweh, ton Dieu, il t’arrive d’aller après d’autres dieux, de les servir et de te prosterner devant eux, j’atteste aujourd’hui contre vous que vous périrez certainement.

It will happen that, if you will forget Yahweh your God and walk after other gods, worship them, and reverence them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.

20 Comme les nations que Yahweh fait périr devant vous, ainsi vous périrez, parce que vous n’aurez pas écouté la voix de Yahweh, votre Dieu.

Like the nations that Yahweh is making to perish before you, so will you perish, because you would not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.
