Actes 23
1 Paul, les regards fixés sur le Sanhédrin, dit: « Mes frères, je me suis conduit devant Dieu jusqu’à ce jour dans toute la droiture d’une bonne conscience... »
Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.”
2 Le grand prêtre Ananie ordonna à ses satellites de le frapper sur la bouche.
The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
3 Alors Paul lui dit: « Certainement, Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie! Tu sièges ici pour me juger selon la Loi, et, au mépris de la Loi, tu ordonnes qu’on me frappe! »
Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the Torah, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?”
4 Les assistants dirent: « Tu outrages le grand-prêtre de Dieu! »
Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?”
5 Paul répondit: « Je ne savais pas, mes frères, qu’il fût grand-prêtre; car il est écrit: Tu ne proféreras pas d’injure contre un chef de ton peuple. »
Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’”
6 Paul, sachant qu’une partie de l’assemblée était composée de Sadducéens et l’autre de Pharisiens, s’écria dans le Sanhédrin: « Mes frères, je suis Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens; c’est à cause de l’espérance en la résurrection des morts que je suis mis en jugement. »
But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
7 Dès qu’il eut prononcé ces paroles, il s’éleva une discussion entre les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens, et l’assemblée se divisa.
When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.
8 Car les Sadducéens disent qu’il n’y a pas de résurrection, ni d’ange et d’esprit, tandis que les Pharisiens affirment l’un et l’autre.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these.
9 Il y eut donc une bruyante agitation, et quelques scribes du parti des Pharisiens, s’étant levés, engagèrent un vif débat, et dirent: « Nous ne trouvons rien à reprendre en cet homme; si un esprit ou un ange lui avait parlé?... »
A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”
10 Comme la discorde allait croissant, le tribun, craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par eux, ordonna à des soldats de descendre pour l’enlever du milieu d’eux et de le ramener dans la forteresse.
When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks.
11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur apparut à Paul et lui dit: « Courage! De même que tu as rendu témoignage de moi dans Jérusalem, il faut aussi que tu me rendes témoignage dans Rome. »
The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.”
12 Dès que le jour parut, les Juifs ourdirent un complot et jurèrent avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, de ne manger ni boire jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent tué Paul.
When it was day, some of the Judeans banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
13 Il y en avait plus de quarante qui s’étaient engagés dans cette conjuration.
There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy.
14 Ils allèrent trouver le prince des prêtres et les Anciens et dirent: « Nous avons solennellement juré de ne prendre aucune nourriture que nous n’ayons tué Paul.
They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
15 Vous donc, maintenant, adressez-vous avec le Sanhédrin au tribun, pour qu’il l’amène devant vous, comme si vous vouliez examiner plus à fond sa cause; et nous, nous sommes prêts à le tuer pendant le trajet. »
Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.”
16 Le fils de la sœur de Paul ayant eu connaissance du complot, accourut à la forteresse et en donna avis à Paul.
But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul.
17 Celui-ci appela un des centurions et lui dit: « Mène ce jeune homme vers le tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui révéler. »
Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.”
18 Le centurion, prenant le jeune homme avec lui, le mena au tribun et dit: « Le prisonnier Paul m’a prié de t’amener ce jeune homme qui a quelque chose à te dire. »
So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.”
19 Le tribun le prit par la main, et l’ayant tiré à part, il lui demanda: « Qu’as-tu à me communiquer? »
The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?”
20 Il répondit: « Les Juifs sont convenus de te prier de faire demain comparaître Paul devant le Sanhédrin, sous le prétexte d’examiner plus à fond sa cause.
He said, “The Judeans have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him.
21 Ne les écoute pas, car plus de quarante d’entre eux lui dressent des embûches, et se sont engagés, avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, à ne manger ni boire avant qu’ils ne l’aient tué. Ils sont tout prêts et n’attendent que ton ordre. »
Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.”
22 Le tribun renvoya ce jeune homme, après lui avoir recommandé de ne dire à personne qu’il lui avait fait ce rapport.
So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.”
23 Et ayant appelé deux centurions, il leur dit: « Tenez prêts, dès la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats avec soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents lanciers, pour aller jusqu’à Césarée.
He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.”
24 Préparez aussi des chevaux pour y faire monter Paul, afin de le conduire sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix. »
He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
25 Il avait écrit une lettre ainsi conçue:
He wrote a letter like this:
26 « Claude Lysias, au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut.
“Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.
27 Les Juifs s’étaient saisis de cet homme et allaient le tuer, lorsque je survins avec des soldats et l’arrachai de leurs mains, ayant appris qu’il était Romain.
“This man was seized by the Judeans, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
28 Voulant savoir de quel crime ils l’accusaient, je le menai devant leur assemblée,
Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council.
29 et je trouvai qu’il était accusé au sujet de questions relatives à leur loi, mais n’avait commis aucun crime qui méritât la mort ou la prison.
I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment.
30 Informé que les Juifs lui dressaient des embûches, je te l’ai immédiatement envoyé, en faisant savoir à ses accusateurs qu’ils eussent à s’expliquer devant toi à son sujet. [Adieu.] »
When I was told that the Judeans lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.”
31 Les soldats ayant donc pris Paul, selon l’ordre qu’ils avaient reçu, le conduisirent pendant la nuit à Antipatris.
So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
32 Le lendemain, laissant les cavaliers poursuivre la route avec le prisonnier, ils retournèrent à la forteresse.
But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks.
33 Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul.
When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.
34 Le gouverneur, après avoir lu la lettre, demanda de quelle province était Paul, et apprenant qu’il était de Cilicie:
When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said,
35 « Je t’entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront venus. » Et il ordonna de le garder dans le prétoire d’Hérode.
“I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.
