1 Naaman, chef de l’armée du roi de Syrie, était auprès de son maître un homme puissant et considéré, car c’était par lui que Yahweh avait accordé le salut aux Syriens; mais cet homme fort et vaillant était lépreux.

Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance to Syria: he was also a mighty man in valor, [but he was] a leper.

2 Or les Syriens, étant sortis par bandes, avaient emmené captive une petite fille du pays d’Israël, qui était au service de la femme de Naaman.

And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife.

3 Elle dit à sa maîtresse: « Oh! Si mon seigneur était auprès du prophète qui est à Samarie, le prophète le délivrerait de sa lèpre. »

And she said to her mistress, I would that my lord [were] with the prophet that [is] in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.

4 Naaman vint rapporter ce propos à son maître, en disant: « La jeune fille du pays d’Israël a parlé de telle et telle manière. »

And [one] went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that [is] of the land of Israel.

5 Et le roi de Syrie dit: « Va, et j’enverrai une lettre au roi d’Israël. » Il partit, prenant avec lui dix talents d’argent, six mille sicles d’or et dix vêtements de rechange.

And the king of Syria said, Come, go, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand [pieces] of gold, and ten changes of raiment.

6 Il porta au roi d’Israël la lettre où il était dit: « Or donc, quand cette lettre te sera parvenue, voici que tu sauras que je t’envoie Naaman, mon serviteur, pour que tu le délivres de sa lèpre. »

And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter hath come to thee, behold, I have [with this] sent Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy.

7 Après avoir lu la lettre, le roi d’Israël déchira ses vêtements et dit: « Suis-je un dieu, capable de faire mourir et de faire vivre, qu’il envoie vers moi pour que je délivre un homme de sa lèpre? Sachez donc et voyez qu’il me cherche querelle. »

And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, [Am] I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send to me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.

8 Lorsqu’Elisée, homme de Dieu, apprit que le roi d’Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements, il envoya dire au roi: « Pourquoi as-tu déchiré tes vêtements? Qu’il vienne donc à moi, et il saura qu’il y a un prophète en Israël. »

And it was [so], when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Why hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 Naaman vint avec ses chevaux et son char, et il s’arrêta à la porte de la maison d’Elisée.

So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.

10 Elisée lui envoya un messager pour lui dire: « Va, et lave-toi sept fois dans le Jourdain; ta chair te reviendra, et tu seras pur. »

And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.

11 Naaman fut irrité, et il s’en alla, en disant: « Voici que je me disais: Il sortira vers moi, il se présentera lui-même, il invoquera le nom de Yahweh, son Dieu, il agitera sa main sur la plaie et délivrera le lépreux.

But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.

12 Les fleuves de Damas, l’Abana et le Pharphar, ne valent-ils pas mieux que toutes les eaux d’Israël? Ne pourrais-je pas m’y laver et devenir pur? » Et se tournant, il s’en allait en colère.

[Are] not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

13 Ses serviteurs s’approchèrent pour lui parler, et ils dirent: « Mon père, si le prophète t’avait demandé quelque chose de difficile, ne l’aurais-tu pas fait? Combien plus dois-tu lui obéir, quand il t’a dit: Lave-toi, et tu seras pur? »

And his servants came near, and spoke to him, and said, My father, [if] the prophet had bid thee [do some] great thing, wouldst thou not have done [it]? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?

14 Il descendit et se plongea sept fois dans le Jourdain, selon la parole de l’homme de Dieu; et sa chair redevint comme la chair d’un petit enfant, et il fut purifié.

Then he went down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

15 Naaman retourna vers l’homme de Dieu, avec toute sa suite. Quand il fut arrivé, il se présenta devant lui et dit: « Voici donc que je sais qu’il n’y a pas de Dieu sur toute la terre, si ce n’est en Israël. Et maintenant, accepte donc un présent de la part de ton serviteur. »

And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that [there is] no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing from thy servant.

16 Elisée répondit: « Aussi vrai que Yahweh devant qui je me tiens est vivant, je n’accepterai pas! » Naaman le pressant d’accepter, il refusa.

But he said, [As] the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take [it]; but he refused.

17 Et Naaman dit: « Sinon, permets que l’on donne de la terre à ton serviteur, la charge de deux mulets; car ton serviteur ne veut plus offrir à d’autres dieux ni holocauste ni sacrifice, si ce n’est à Yahweh.

And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt-offering nor sacrifice to other gods, but to the LORD.

18 Toutefois, que Yahweh pardonne ceci à ton serviteur: Quand mon maître entre dans la maison de Remmon pour y adorer, et qu’il s’appuie sur ma main, je me prosterne aussi dans la maison de Remmon; daigne Yahweh pardonner à ton serviteur si je me prosterne dans la maison de Remmon! »

In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, [that] when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing.

19 Elisée lui dit: « Va en paix. » Et Naaman quitta Elisée. Il était à une certaine distance,

And he said to him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.

20 lorsque Giézi, serviteur d’Elisée, homme de Dieu, dit en lui-même: « Voici que mon maître a ménagé Naaman, ce Syrien, en n’acceptant pas de sa main ce qu’il avait apporté. Yahweh est vivant! Je vais courir après lui et j’en obtiendrai quelque chose. »

But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but [as] the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat from him.

21 Et Giézi se mit à poursuivre Naaman. Naaman, le voyant courir après lui, descendit de son char pour aller à sa rencontre, et il dit: « Tout va-t-il bien? »

So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw [him] running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, [Is] all well?

22 Giézi répondit: « Tout va bien! Mon maître m’envoie te dire: Voici que viennent d’arriver chez moi deux jeunes gens de la montagne d’Ephraïm, d’entre les fils des prophètes; donne pour eux, je te prie, un talent d’argent et deux vêtements de rechange. »

And he said, All [is] well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there have come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.

23 Naaman dit: « Consens à prendre deux talents. » Il le pressa d’accepter et, ayant serré deux talents d’argent dans deux sacs avec deux habits de rechange, il les remit à deux de ses serviteurs pour les porter devant Giézi.

And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid [them] upon two of his servants; and they bore [them] before him.

24 Arrivé à la colline, Giézi les prit de leurs mains et les déposa dans la maison, puis il renvoya les hommes, qui partirent.

And when he came to the tower, he took [them] from their hand, and bestowed [them] in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.

25 Et il alla se présenter à son maître. Elisée lui dit: « D’où viens-tu, Giézi? » Il répondit: « Ton serviteur n’est allé ni d’un côté ni d’un autre. »

But he went in, and stood before his master: and Elisha said to him, Whence [comest thou] Gehazi? and he said, Thy servant went no whither.

26 Mais Elisée lui dit: « Mon esprit n’est-il pas allé avec toi, lorsque cet homme a quitté son char pour venir à ta rencontre? Est-ce le moment d’accepter de l’argent, et d’accepter des vêtements et des oliviers et des vignes et des brebis et des bœufs et des serviteurs et des servantes?

And he said to him, Went not my heart [with thee], when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? [Is it] a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and olive-yards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and men-servants, and maid-servants?

27 La lèpre de Naaman s’attachera à toi et à ta postérité pour toujours. » Et Giézi sortit de la présence d’Elisée avec une lèpre blanche comme la neige.

The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave to thee, and to thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper [as white] as snow.
