2 Chroniques 10
1 Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour le faire roi.
And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
2 Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, ayant appris ce qui se passait, — il était encore en Égypte, où il s’était enfui loin du roi Salomon, — revint d’Égypte,
And it came to pass when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (now he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon) that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3 et on l’envoya chercher. Alors Jéroboam et tout Israël vinrent et parlèrent à Roboam en ces termes:
And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam saying,
4 « Ton père a rendu notre joug dur; maintenant, allège la dure servitude que nous a imposée ton père et le joug pesant qu’il a mis sur nous; et nous te servirons. »
Thy father made our yoke grievous; and now lighten the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5 Il leur dit: « Revenez vers moi dans trois jours. » Et le peuple s’en alla.
And he said to them, Come again to me after three days. And the people departed.
6 Le roi Roboam consulta les vieillards qui s’étaient tenus auprès de Salomon, son père, pendant sa vie, en disant: « Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple? »
And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, How do ye advise to return answer to this people?
7 Ils lui parlèrent en disant: « Si tu es bon envers ce peuple, si tu les reçois avec faveur et si tu leur adresses des paroles bienveillantes, ils seront pour toujours tes serviteurs. »
And they spoke to him saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 Mais Roboam laissa le conseil que lui donnaient les vieillards, et il consulta les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et qui se tenaient devant lui.
But he forsook the advice of the old men which they had given him, and consulted with the young men, who had grown up with him, that stood before him.
9 Il leur dit: « Que me conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple qui me tient ce langage: Allège le joug que nous a imposé ton père? »
And he said to them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me saying, Lighten the yoke which thy father put upon us?
10 Les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui lui répondirent en disant: « Tu parleras ainsi à ce peuple qui t’a tenu ce langage: Ton père a rendu notre joug pesant; toi, allège-le-nous! Tu leur parleras ainsi: Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père.
And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him saying, Thus shalt thou say to the people who have spoken to thee saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and lighten thou it for us, — thus shalt thou say to them: My little [finger] is thicker than my father's loins;
11 Eh bien! mon père vous a chargés d’un joug pesant, et moi je rendrai votre joug plus pesant encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions. »
and whereas my father laid a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.
12 Jéroboam et tout le peuple vinrent auprès de Roboam le troisième jour, selon que le roi avait dit: « Revenez vers moi dans trois jours. »
And Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13 Le roi leur répondit durement. Laissant le conseil des vieillards,
And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the advice of the old men,
14 le roi Roboam leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, en ces termes: « Mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, et moi je vous le rendrai plus pesant encore; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions. »
and spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.
15 Le roi n’écouta donc pas le peuple, car tel était le procédé de Dieu pour accomplir la parole que Yahweh avait dite par Ahias de Silo à Jéroboam, fils de Nabat.
So the king hearkened not to the people; for it was brought about by God, that Jehovah might give effect to his word, which he spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 Lorsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne l’écoutait pas, le peuple répondit au roi en ces termes: « Quelle part avons-nous avec David? Nous n’avons pas d’héritage avec le fils d’Isaï. Chacun à ses tentes, Israël. Quant à toi, pourvois à ta maison, David! » Et tout Israël s’en alla dans ses tentes.
And all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them; and the people answered the king saying, What portion have we in David? and [we have] no inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel. Now see to thine own house, David! And all Israel went to their tents.
17 Ce fut seulement sur les enfants d’Israël qui habitaient les villes de Juda que régna Roboam.
But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Alors le roi Roboam envoya Aduram, qui était préposé aux impôts; mais Aduram fut lapidé par tout Israël, et il mourut. Et le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur un char pour s’enfuir à Jérusalem.
And king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the levy; but the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. And king Rehoboam hastened to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 C’est ainsi qu’Israël se détacha de la maison de David jusqu’à ce jour.
And Israel rebelled against the house of David, unto this day.
