1 Samuel 25
1 Cependant Samuel mourut et tout Israël s’assembla; on le pleura, et on l’enterra dans sa demeure, à Rama. Alors David se leva et descendit au désert de Pharan.
And Samuel dieth, and all Israel are gathered, and mourn for him, and bury him in his house, in Ramah; and David riseth and goeth down unto the wilderness of Paran.
2 Il y avait à Maon un homme ayant ses biens à Carmel; c’était un homme très riche, il avait trois mille brebis et mille chèvres, et il se trouvait à Carmel pour la tonte de ses brebis.
And [there is] a man in Maon, and his work [is] in Carmel; and the man [is] very great, and he hath three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats; and he is shearing his flock in Carmel.
3 Le nom de cet homme était Nabal, et le nom de sa femme Abigaïl. La femme était pleine de sens, et de belle figure; mais l’homme était dur et méchant en actes; il était de la race de Caleb.
And the name of the man [is] Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail, and the woman [is] of good understanding, and of fair form, and the man [is] hard and evil [in] doings; and he [is] a Calebite.
4 David apprit au désert que Nabal tondait ses brebis.
And David heareth in the wilderness that Nabal is shearing his flock,
5 David envoya dix jeunes gens, et David dit aux jeunes gens: « Montez à Carmel et allez trouver Nabal; vous le saluerez en mon nom,
and David sendeth ten young men, and David saith to the young men, 'Go ye up to Carmel, and ye have come in unto Nabal, and asked of him in my name of welfare,
6 et vous lui parlerez ainsi: Pour la vie! Que la paix soit avec toi, que la paix soit avec ta maison et que la paix soit avec tout ce qui t’appartient.
and said thus: To life! and thou, peace; and thy house, peace; and all that thou hast — peace!
7 Et maintenant, j’ai appris que tu as les tondeurs. Or, tes bergers ont été avec nous; nous ne leur avons causé aucune peine, et rien du troupeau ne leur a été enlevé pendant tout le temps qu’ils ont été à Carmel.
and, now, I have heard that thou hast shearers; now, the shepherds whom thou hast have been with us, we have not put them to shame, nor hath anything been looked after by them, all the days of their being in Carmel.
8 Interroge tes serviteurs, et ils te le diront. Que les jeunes gens trouvent donc grâce à tes yeux, puisque nous venons dans un jour de joie. Donne, je te prie, à tes serviteurs et à ton fils David ce que ta main pourra trouver. »
'Ask thy young men, and they declare to thee, and the young men find grace in thine eyes, for on a good day we have come; give, I pray thee, that which thy hand findeth, to thy servants, and to thy son, to David.'
9 Lorsque les jeunes gens de David furent arrivés, ils répétèrent toutes ces paroles à Nabal au nom de David, et ils se reposèrent.
And the young men of David come in, and speak unto Nabal according to all these words, in the name of David — and rest.
10 Nabal répondit aux serviteurs de David et dit: « Qui est David, et qui est le fils d’Isaï? Ils sont nombreux aujourd’hui les serviteurs qui s’échappent de chez leurs maîtres.
And Nabal answereth the servants of David and saith, 'Who [is] David, and who the son of Jesse? to-day have servants been multiplied who are breaking away each from his master;
11 Et je prendrais mon pain et mon eau, et mon bétail que j’ai tué pour mes tondeurs, et je les donnerais à des gens qui viennent je ne sais d’où? »
and I have taken my bread, and my water, and my flesh, which I slaughtered for my shearers, and have given [it] to men whom I have not known whence they [are]!'
12 Les jeunes gens de David, rebroussant chemin, s’en retournèrent et, lorsqu’ils furent arrivés, ils lui redirent toutes ces paroles.
And the young men of David turn on their way, and turn back, and come in, and declare to him according to all these words.
13 Alors David dit à ses hommes: « Que chacun de vous ceigne son épée! » Et ils ceignirent chacun leur épée, et David, lui aussi, ceignit son épée; environ quatre cents hommes montèrent à la suite de David; il en resta deux cents près des bagages.
And David saith to his men, 'Gird ye on each his sword;' and they gird on each his sword, and David also girdeth on his sword, and there go up after David about four hundred men, and two hundred have remained by the vessels.
14 Un des serviteurs de Nabal vint apporter la nouvelle à Abigaïl en disant: « Voici que David a envoyé du désert des messagers pour saluer notre maître, qui s’est jeté sur eux.
And to Abigail wife of Nabal hath one young man of the youths declared, saying, 'Lo, David hath sent messengers out of the wilderness to bless our lord, and he flieth upon them;
15 Et pourtant ces gens ont été bons pour nous; ils ne nous ont causé aucune peine, et rien ne nous a été enlevé tout le temps que nous avons cheminé avec eux, lorsque nous étions dans la campagne.
and the men [are] very good to us, and have not put us to shame, and we have not looked after anything all the days we have gone up and down with them, in our being in the field;
16 Ils nous ont servi de rempart, aussi bien la nuit que le jour, tout le temps que nous avons été avec eux, paissant les troupeaux.
a wall they have been unto us both by night and by day, all the days of our being with them, feeding the flock.
17 Reconnais maintenant et vois ce que tu as à faire; car le mal est résolu contre notre maître et contre toute sa maison; pour lui, c’est un fils de Bélial, et on ne peut lui parler. »
'And, now, know and consider what thou dost; for evil hath been determined against our lord, and against all his house, and he [is] too much a son of worthlessness to be spoken to.'
18 Aussitôt Abigaïl prit deux cents pains, deux outres de vin, cinq moutons apprêtés, cinq mesures de grain rôti, cent masses de raisin sec et deux cents de figues sèches et, les ayant mis sur des ânes,
And Abigail hasteth, and taketh two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep, prepared, and five measures of roasted corn, and a hundred bunches of raisins, and two hundred bunches of figs, and setteth [them] on the asses.
19 elle dit à ses jeunes gens: « Passez devant moi, je vous suis. » Mais elle ne dit rien à Nabal, son mari.
And she saith to her young men, 'Pass over before me; lo, after you I am coming;' and to her husband Nabal she hath not declared [it];
20 Comme elle descendait, montée sur un âne, en un endroit couvert de la montagne, voici que David et ses hommes descendaient en face d’elle, et elle les rencontra. —
and it hath come to pass, she is riding on the ass and is coming down in the secret part of the hill-country, and lo, David and his men are coming down to meet her, and she meeteth them.
21 David disait: « C’est bien en vain que j’ai surveillé tout ce que cet homme a dans le désert, et que rien n’a été enlevé de tout ce qu’il possède; il me rend le mal pour le bien!
And David said, 'Only, in vain I have kept all that this [one] hath in the wilderness, and nothing hath been looked after of all that he hath, and he turneth back to me evil for good;
22 Que Dieu traite dans toute sa rigueur les ennemis de David! De tout ce qui appartient à Nabal, je ne laisserai rien subsister jusqu’au lever du jour, pas même celui qui urine contre le mur. »
thus doth God do to the enemies of David, and thus He doth add, if I leave of all that he hath till the light of the morning — of those sitting on the wall.'
23 Dès qu’Abigaïl aperçut David, elle s’empressa de descendre de l’âne et, tombant sur sa face devant David, elle se prosterna contre terre.
And Abigail seeth David, and hasteth and cometh down from off the ass, and falleth before David on her face, and boweth herself to the earth,
24 Puis elle se jeta à ses pieds, en disant: « Que sur moi, mon seigneur, sur moi soit la faute! Permets à ta servante de parler à tes oreilles, et écoute les paroles de ta servante!
and falleth at his feet and saith, 'On me, my lord, the iniquity; and let, I pray thee, thy handmaid speak in thine ear, and hear the words of thy handmaid.
25 Que mon seigneur ne prenne pas garde à cet homme de Bélial, à Nabal, car il est ce que son nom indique; son nom est Le Fou, et il y a chez lui de la folie. Mais moi, ta servante, je n’ai pas vu les gens de mon seigneur, que tu as envoyés.
'Let not, I pray thee, my lord set his heart to this man of worthlessness, on Nabal, for as his name [is] so [is] he; Nabal [is] his name, and folly [is] with him; and I, thine handmaid, did not see the young men of my lord whom thou didst send;
26 Maintenant, mon seigneur, aussi vrai que Yahweh est vivant et que ton âme est vivante, Yahweh t’a préservé de répandre le sang et de te venger de ta main. Et maintenant, que tes ennemis et ceux qui veulent du mal à mon seigneur soient comme Nabal!
and now, my lord, Jehovah liveth, and thy soul liveth, in that Jehovah hath withheld thee from coming in with blood, and to save thy hand to thee — now let thine enemies be as Nabal, even those seeking evil unto my lord.
27 Accepte donc ce présent que ta servante apporte à mon seigneur, et qu’il soit distribué aux jeunes gens qui marchent à la suite de mon seigneur.
'And, now, this blessing which thy maid-servant hath brought to my lord — it hath been given to the young men who are going up and down at the feet of my lord.
28 Pardonne, je te prie, la faute de ta servante, car Yahweh fera certainement à mon seigneur une maison stable; car mon seigneur soutient les guerres de Yahweh, et on ne trouvera pas de mal en toi tout le temps de ta vie.
'Bear, I pray thee, with the transgression of thy handmaid, for Jehovah doth certainly make to my lord a stedfast house; for the battles of Jehovah hath my lord fought, and evil is not found in thee [all] thy days.
29 S’il s’élève quelqu’un pour te poursuivre et en vouloir à ta vie, la vie de mon seigneur sera liée dans le faisceau des vivants auprès de Yahweh, ton Dieu, et la vie de tes ennemis, il la lancera au loin du creux de la fronde.
And man riseth to pursue thee and to seek thy soul, and the soul of my lord hath been bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah thy God; as to the soul of thine enemies, He doth sling them out in the midst of the hollow of the sling.
30 Lorsque Yahweh aura fait à mon seigneur selon tout le bien qu’il a dit à ton sujet et qu’il t’aura établi chef sur Israël,
'And it hath been, when Jehovah doth to my lord according to all the good which He hath spoken concerning thee, and appointed thee for leader over Israel,
31 ce ne sera pas pour toi un sujet de remords ni pour mon seigneur une souffrance de cœur d’avoir répandu le sang sans motif et s’être vengé lui-même. Et lorsque Yahweh aura fait du bien à mon seigneur, souviens-toi de ta servante. »
that this is not to thee for a stumbling-block, and for an offence of heart to my lord — either to shed blood for nought, or my lord's restraining himself; and Jehovah hath done good to my lord, and thou hast remembered thy handmaid.'
32 David dit à Abigaïl: « Béni soit Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, qui t’a envoyée, aujourd’hui à ma rencontre! Béni soit ton grand sens,
And David saith to Abigail, 'Blessed [is] Jehovah, God of Israel, who hath sent thee this day to meet me,
33 et bénie sois-tu, toi qui m’as empêché en ce jour de répandre le sang et de me venger de ma main!
and blessed [is] thy discretion, and blessed [art] thou in that thou hast restrained me this day from coming in with blood, and to restrain my hand to myself.
34 Autrement, aussi vrai que Yahweh, le Dieu d’Israël, qui m’a empêché de te faire du mal, est vivant, si tu ne t’étais pas hâtée de venir au-devant de moi, il ne fût rien resté à Nabal d’ici au lever du jour, pas même celui qui urine contre le mur. »
And yet, Jehovah liveth, God of Israel, who hath kept me back from doing evil with thee, for unless thou hadst hasted, and dost come to meet me, surely there had not been left to Nabal till the light of the morning, of those sitting on the wall.'
35 David prit de la main d’Abigaïl ce qu’elle lui avait apporté, et lui dit: « Monte en paix dans ta maison; vois, j’ai écouté ta voix et relevé ton visage! »
And David receiveth from her hand that which she hath brought to him, and to her he hath said, 'Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and accept thy face.'
36 Abigaïl retourna vers Nabal, et voici qu’il faisait dans sa maison un festin comme un festin de roi; et le cœur de Nabal était joyeux, et il était complètement ivre. Elle ne lui apprit ni peu, ni beaucoup, jusqu’au lever du jour.
And Abigail cometh in unto Nabal, and lo, he hath a banquet in his house, like a banquet of the king, and the heart of Nabal [is] glad within him, and he [is] drunk unto excess, and she hath not declared to him anything, less or more, till the light of the morning.
37 Mais le matin, quand Nabal fut revenu de son ivresse, sa femme lui raconta ces choses, et son cœur en reçut un coup mortel, et il devint comme une pierre.
And it cometh to pass in the morning, when the wine is gone out from Nabal, that his wife declareth to him these things, and his heart dieth within him, and he hath been as a stone.
38 Environ dix jours après, Yahweh frappa Nabal, et il mourut.
And it cometh to pass, [in] about ten days, that Jehovah smiteth Nabal, and he dieth,
39 Lorsque David apprit la mort de Nabal, il dit: « Béni soit Yahweh qui a défendu ma cause et m’a vengé de l’outrage que j’ai reçu de la main de Nabal, et qui a empêché son serviteur de faire le mal! Yahweh a fait retomber la méchanceté de Nabal sur sa tête. » Ensuite David envoya dire à Abigaïl qu’il voulait la prendre pour femme.
and David heareth that Nabal [is] dead, and saith, 'Blessed [is] Jehovah who hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and His servant hath kept back from evil, and the wickedness of Nabal hath Jehovah turned back on his own head;' and David sendeth and speaketh with Abigail, to take her to him for a wife.
40 Arrivés chez Abigaïl à Carmel, les serviteurs de David lui parlèrent ainsi: « David nous a envoyés vers toi, afin de te prendre pour sa femme. »
And the servants of David come in unto Abigail at Carmel, and speak unto her, saying, 'David hath sent us unto thee to take thee to him for a wife.'
41 Elle se leva et, s’étant prosternée le visage contre terre, elle dit: « Voici que ta servante est comme une esclave pour laver les pieds des serviteurs de mon seigneur! »
And she riseth and boweth herself — face to the earth — and saith, 'Lo, thy handmaid [is] for a maid-servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.'
42 Aussitôt Abigaïl se leva et monta sur un âne, et cinq de ses jeunes filles allaient sur ses pas; elle suivit les messagers de David, et elle devint sa femme.
And Abigail hasteth and riseth, and rideth on the ass; and five of her young women who are going at her feet; and she goeth after the messengers of David, and is to him for a wife.
43 David prit aussi Achinoam de Jezraël, et toutes les deux furent ses femmes.
And Ahinoam hath David taken from Jezreel, and they are — even both of them — to him for wives;
44 Mais Saül avait donné sa fille Michol, femme de David, à Phalti de Gallim, fils de Laïs.
and Saul gave Michal his daughter, wife to David, to Phalti son of Laish, who [is] of Gallim.
