1 Samuel 16
1 Yahweh dit à Samuel: « Jusques à quand pleureras-tu sur Saül, alors que je l’ai rejeté, afin qu’il ne règne plus sur Israël? Remplis ta corne d’huile et va; je t’envoie chez Isaï de Béthléem, car j’ai vu parmi ses fils le roi que je veux. »
Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected for myself a king among his sons.”
2 Samuel dit: « Comment irais-je? Saül l’apprendra, et il me tuera. » Et Yahweh dit: « Tu prendras avec toi une génisse, et tu diras: C’est pour offrir un sacrifice à Yahweh que je suis venu.
Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.'
3 Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice, et je te ferai connaître ce que tu auras à faire, et tu oindras pour moi celui que je te désignerai. »
Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you will do. You will anoint for me the one whom I tell you.”
4 Samuel fit ce que Yahweh avait dit, et il se rendit à Bethléem. Les anciens de la ville vinrent inquiets au-devant de lui et dirent: « Ton arrivée est-elle pour la paix? »
Samuel did as Yahweh said and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the city were trembling as they came to meet him and said, “Are you coming in peace?”
5 Il répondit: « Pour la paix! Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à Yahweh. Sanctifiez-vous et venez avec moi au sacrifice. » Et il sanctifia Isaï et ses fils et les invita au sacrifice.
He said, “In peace; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Prepare to set yourselves apart and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he set apart Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 Lorsqu’ils furent entrés, Samuel aperçut Eliab et dit: « Certainement l’oint de Yahweh est devant lui. »
When they came, he looked at Eliab and said to himself that Yahweh's anointed was certainly standing before him.
7 Et Yahweh dit à Samuel: « Ne prends pas garde à sa figure et à la hauteur de sa taille, car je l’ai écarté. Il ne s’agit pas de ce que l’homme voit; l’homme regarde le visage, mais Yahweh regarde le cœur. »
But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Do not look at his outward appearance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him. For Yahweh does not see as man sees; man looks on the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks on the heart.”
8 Isaï appela Abinadab et le fit passer devant Samuel; et Samuel dit: « Ce n’est pas encore celui-ci que Yahweh a choisi. »
Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. Then Samuel said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”
9 Isaï fit passer Samma; et Samuel dit: « Ce n’est pas encore celui-ci que Yahweh a choisi. »
Jesse then made Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Neither has Yahweh chosen this one.”
10 Isaï fit passer ses sept fils devant Samuel; et Samuel dit à Isaï: « Yahweh n’a choisi aucun de ceux-ci. »
Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Yahweh has not chosen any of these.”
11 Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: « Sont-ce là tous les jeunes gens? » Il répondit: « Il y a encore le plus jeune, et voilà qu’il fait paître les brebis. » Samuel dit à Isaï: « Envoie-le chercher, car nous ne nous mettrons pas à table qu’il ne soit venu ici. »
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all of your sons here?” He replied, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is tending the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
12 Isaï l’envoya chercher. Or il était blond, avec de beaux yeux et une belle figure. Yahweh dit: « Lève-toi, oins-le, car c’est lui! »
Jesse sent and brought him in. Now this son was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. Yahweh said, “Arise, anoint him; for he is the one.”
13 Samuel, ayant pris la corne d’huile, l’oignit au milieu de ses frères, et l’Esprit de Yahweh fondit sur David à partir de ce jour et dans la suite. Samuel se leva et s’en alla à Ramatha.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the middle of his brothers. The Spirit of Yahweh rushed on David from that day forward. Then Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
14 L’Esprit de Yahweh se retira de Saül, et un mauvais esprit venu de Yahweh fondit sur lui.
Now the Spirit of Yahweh left Saul, and a harmful spirit from Yahweh troubled him instead.
15 Les serviteurs de Saül lui dirent: « Voici qu’un mauvais esprit de Dieu fond sur toi.
Saul's servants said to him, “Look, a harmful spirit from God troubles you.
16 Que notre seigneur parle; tes serviteurs sont devant toi, ils chercheront un homme sachant jouer de la harpe, et, quand le mauvais esprit venu de Dieu sera sur toi, il jouera de sa main, et tu seras soulagé. »
Let our master now command your servants who are before you to look for a man who is a skillful player on the harp. Then when the harmful spirit from God is on you, he will play it and you will be well.”
17 Saül répondit à ses serviteurs: « Trouvez-moi donc un homme habile à jouer, et amenez-le-moi. »
Saul said to his servants, “Find me a man that can play well and bring him to me.”
18 L’un des serviteurs, prenant la parole, dit: « J’ai vu un fils d’Isaï de Bethléem, qui sait jouer; il est fort et vaillant guerrier, parlant bien; c’est un homme de belle figure, et Yahweh est sur lui. »
Then one of the young men answered, and said, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a strong, courageous man, a man of war, one prudent in speech, a handsome man; and Yahweh is with him.”
19 Saül envoya des messagers à Isaï, pour lui dire: « Envoie-moi David, ton fils, qui est avec les brebis. »
So Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
20 Isaï prit un âne, avec du pain, une outre de vin et un chevreau, et les envoya à Saül par David, son fils.
Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a container of wine, and a young goat, and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 Arrivé chez Saül, David se tint devant lui; et Saül le prit en affection, et il devint son écuyer.
Then David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer.
22 Et Saül envoya dire à Isaï: « Que David, je te prie, reste devant moi, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux. »
Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my eyes.”
23 Lorsque l’esprit venu de Dieu était sur Saül, David prenait la harpe et jouait de sa main, et Saül se calmait et se trouvait bien, et le mauvais esprit se retirait de lui.
Whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the harp and played it. So Saul would be refreshed and well, and the harmful spirit would depart from him.
