1 Corinthiens 14
1 Recherchez la charité. Aspirez néanmoins aux dons spirituels, mais surtout à celui de prophétie.
Labour after charity, and be desirous of spiritual gifts: but especially that ye may prophesy.
2 En effet, celui qui parle en langue ne parle pas aux hommes, mais à Dieu, car personne ne le comprend, et c’est en esprit qu’il dit des mystères.
For he, that speaketh in an unknown tongue, speaketh not to men, but to God: for no one understandeth, though in spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 Celui qui prophétise au contraire, parle aux hommes, les édifie, les exhorte, les console.
But he, that prophesieth, speaketh edification, and exhortation, and comfort to men.
4 Celui qui parle en langue s’édifie lui-même; celui qui prophétise édifie l’Eglise [de Dieu].
He, that speaketh in an unknown tongue, edifieth himself: but he, that prophesieth, edifieth the church.
5 Je désire que vous parliez tous en langues, mais encore plus que vous prophétisiez; car celui qui prophétise est plus grand que celui qui parle en langues, à moins que ce dernier n’interprète ce qu’il dit, pour que l’Eglise en reçoive de l’édification.
I could wish that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edification.
6 Voyons, frères, de quelle utilité vous serais-je, si je venais à vous parlant en langues, et si je ne vous parle pas par révélation, ou par science, ou par prophétie, ou par doctrine?
Now, my brethren, if I come to you speaking with many tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak intelligibly to you of revelation, or knowledge, or prophecy, or doctrine?
7 Si les objets inanimés qui rendent un son, comme une flûte ou une harpe, ne rendent pas des sons distincts, comment connaîtra-t-on ce qui est joué sur la flûte ou sur la harpe?
As inanimate things which give a found, whether pipe or harp, unless they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall what is piped or harped be understood?
8 Et si la trompette rend un son confus, qui se préparera au combat?
For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for the battle?
9 De même vous, si vous ne faites pas entendre avec la langue une parole distincte, comment saura-t-on ce que vous dites? Vous parlerez en l’air.
So also unless ye utter by the tongue intelligible words, how shall what is spoken be understood? for thus ye will be only talking to the wind.
10 Quelque nombreuses que puissent être dans le monde les diverses langues, il n’en est aucune qui consiste en sons inintelligibles.
There are, it may be, as many kinds of voices in the world as people, and none of them insignificant.
11 Si donc j’ignore la valeur du son, je serai un barbare pour celui qui parle, et celui qui parle sera un barbare pour moi.
But if I know not the force of the words, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian to me.
12 De même vous aussi, puisque vous aspirez aux dons spirituels, que ce soit pour l’édification de l’Eglise que vous cherchiez à en avoir abondamment.
So ye also, since ye are so desirous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound in them to the edification of the church.
13 C’est pourquoi, que celui qui parle en langue prie pour obtenir le don d’interpréter.
Wherefore let him, that speaketh in an unknown tongue, pray that he may interpret.
14 Car si je prie en langue, mon esprit est en prière, mais mon intelligence demeure sans fruit.
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit indeed prayeth, but my meaning is fruitless.
15 Que faire donc? Je prierai avec l’esprit, mais je prierai aussi avec l’intelligence; je chanterai avec l’esprit, mais je chanterai aussi avec l’intelligence.
What is then to be done? I will pray with the Spirit, but I will pray to be understood: I will sing with the spirit, but I will sing to be understood.
16 Autrement, si tu rends grâces avec l’esprit, comment celui qui est dans les rangs de l’homme du peuple répondra-t-il « Amen! » à ton action de grâces, puisqu’il ne sait pas ce que tu dis?
For if thou bless in the spirit, how shall the unlearned say Amen to thy thanksgiving, when he knoweth not what thou sayst?
17 Ton hymne d’action de grâces est sans doute fort beau; mais lui n’en est pas édifié.
thou indeed givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18 Je rends grâces à [mon] Dieu de ce que je parle en langues plus que vous tous;
I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all.
19 mais, dans l’Eglise, j’aime mieux dire cinq paroles avec mon intelligence, afin d’instruire aussi les autres, que dix mille paroles en langue.
But in a public assembly I had rather speak five words to be understood, that I may instruct others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
20 Frères, ne soyez pas des enfants sous le rapport du jugement; mais faites-vous enfants sous le rapport de la malice, et, pour le jugement, soyez des hommes faits.
My brethren, be not children in sense: but in malice be infants, and in your judgements shew yourselves to be men.
21 Il est écrit dans la Loi: « C’est par des hommes d’une autre langue et par des lèvres étrangères que je parlerai à ce peuple, et même ainsi ils ne m’écouteront pas, dit le Seigneur. »
It is written in the law, "By men of another language, and by other lips, will I speak to this people, and even so they will not listen to me, saith the Lord."
22 C’est donc que les langues sont un signe, non pour les croyants, mais pour les infidèles; la prophétie, au contraire, est un signe, non pour les infidèles, mais pour les croyants.
So that tongues are for a sign, not to believers but to unbelievers: but prophecy not to unbelievers but to those that believe.
23 Si donc, l’Eglise entière se trouvant réunie en assemblée, tous parlent en langues, et qu’il survienne des hommes non initiés ou des infidèles, ne diront-ils pas que vous êtes des fous?
If then the whole church be come together and all speak in unknown tongues, and there come in illiterate persons, or infidels, will they not say that ye are mad?
24 Mais si tous prophétisent, et qu’il survienne un infidèle ou un homme non initié, il est convaincu par tous, il est jugé par tous,
But if all prophesy, and there come in an unbeliever, or one unlearned, he is convinced by all, he is judged by all.
25 les secrets de son cœur sont dévoilés, de telle sorte que, tombant sur sa face, il adorera Dieu, et publiera que Dieu est vraiment au milieu de vous.
And thus the secrets of his heart are made manifest; so that falling down upon his face he will worship God, declaring that God is indeed among you.
26 Que faire donc, mes frères? Lorsque vous vous assemblez, tel d’entre vous a un cantique, tel une instruction, tel une révélation, tel un discours en langue, tel une interprétation, que tout se passe de manière à édifier.
What is then to be done, my brethren? when ye come together, if any of you hath a psalm, a doctrine, a tongue, a revelation, an interpretation, ---let all be done for edification.
27 Si l’on parle en langue, que ce soient chaque fois deux ou trois au plus, chacun à son tour, et qu’il y ait un interprète;
And if any one speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at most by three, and that by turns; and let one interpret.
28 s’il n’y a pas d’interprète, qu’on se taise dans l’assemblée et qu’on se parle à soi-même et à Dieu.
But if there be no interpreter, let him be silent in the assembly; and let him speak to himself and to God.
29 Pour les prophètes, qu’il y en ait deux ou trois à parler, et que les autres jugent;
And let but two or three of the prophets speak, and the others judge.
30 et si un autre, qui est assis, a une révélation, que le premier se taise.
And if any thing be revealed to another sitting by, let the first have done speaking before the other begins.
31 Car vous pouvez tous prophétiser l’un après l’autre, afin que tous soient instruits et que tous soient exhortés.
For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32 Or les esprits des prophètes sont soumis aux prophètes,
And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets:
33 car Dieu n’est pas un Dieu de désordre, mais de paix. Comme cela a eu lieu dans toutes les Eglises des saints,
for God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as we see in all the assemblies of the saints.
34 que vos femmes se taisent dans les assemblées, car elles n’ont pas mission de parler; mais qu’elles soient soumises, comme le dit aussi la Loi.
Let your women be silent in your assemblies: for it is not permitted to them to speak, but they are to be in subjection, as the law saith.
35 Si elles veulent s’instruire sur quelque point, qu’elles interrogent leurs maris à la maison; car il est malséant à une femme de parler dans une assemblée.
And if they would learn any thing, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it does not become women to speak in a public assembly.
36 Est-ce de chez vous que la parole de Dieu est sortie? ou est-ce à vous seuls qu’elle est parvenue?
Did the word of God come out first from you? or did it come to you only?
37 Si quelqu’un croit être prophète ou riche en dons spirituels, qu’il reconnaisse que ces choses que je vous ai écrites sont des commandements du Seigneur.
If any one seem to be a prophet, or acted by the Spirit, let him acknowlege that what I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
38 Et s’il veut l’ignorer, qu’il l’ignore.
But if any will be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39 Ainsi donc, mes frères, aspirez au don de prophétie, et n’empêchez pas de parler en langue.
Wherefore, my brethren, be most desirous to prophesy, and yet forbid not to speak with tongues:
40 Mais que tout se fasse avec bienséance et avec ordre.
but let all things be done decently and in order.
