Actes 23
1 Paul, regardant fixement le conseil, dit: « Frères, j'ai vécu devant Dieu en toute bonne conscience jusqu'à ce jour. »
And Paul, looking fixedly at the Sanhedrin, said, My brothers, my life has been upright before God till this day.
2 Le grand prêtre, Ananias, ordonna à ceux qui se tenaient près de lui de le frapper sur la bouche.
And the high priest, Ananias, gave orders to those who were near him to give him a blow on the mouth.
3 Alors Paul lui dit: « Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie! T'assieds-tu pour me juger selon la loi, et ordonnes-tu de me frapper contrairement à la loi? ".
Then Paul said to him, God will give blows to you, you whitewashed wall: are you here to be my judge by law, and by your orders am I given blows against the law?
4 Ceux qui se tenaient là dirent: « Est-ce que tu diffames le grand prêtre de Dieu? »
And those who were near said, Do you say such words against God's high priest?
5 Paul dit: « Je ne savais pas, frères, qu'il était grand prêtre. Car il est écrit: « Tu ne parleras pas mal d'un chef de ton peuple ».
And Paul said, Brother, I had no idea that he was the high priest: for it has been said, You may not say evil about the ruler of your people.
6 Mais Paul, voyant que les uns étaient sadducéens et les autres pharisiens, s'écria dans le sanhédrin: « Hommes et frères, je suis pharisien, fils de pharisiens. C'est au sujet de l'espérance et de la résurrection des morts que je suis jugé! »
But when Paul saw that half of them were Sadducees and the rest Pharisees, he said in the Sanhedrin, Brothers, I am a Pharisee, and the son of Pharisees: I am here to be judged on the question of the hope of the coming back from the dead.
7 Dès qu'il eut dit cela, une dispute s'éleva entre les pharisiens et les sadducéens, et la foule se divisa.
And when he had said this, there was an argument between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and a division in the meeting.
8 Car les sadducéens disent qu'il n'y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit; mais les pharisiens confessent tout cela.
For the Sadducees say that there is no coming back from the dead, and no angels or spirits: but the Pharisees have belief in all these.
9 Une grande clameur s'éleva, et quelques-uns des scribes, du côté des pharisiens, se levèrent et disputèrent, disant: « Nous ne trouvons aucun mal en cet homme. Mais si un esprit ou un ange lui a parlé, ne luttons pas contre Dieu! »
And there was a great outcry: and some of the scribes on the side of the Pharisees got up and took part in the discussion, saying, We see no evil in this man: what if he has had a revelation from an angel or a spirit?
10 Une grande dispute s'étant élevée, le commandant, craignant que Paul ne soit mis en pièces par eux, ordonna aux soldats de descendre, de le prendre de force parmi eux et de l'amener dans la caserne.
And when the argument became very violent, the chief captain, fearing that Paul would be pulled in two by them, gave orders to the armed men to take him by force from among them, and take him into the army building.
11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur se tint près de lui et dit: « Courage, Paul, car de même que tu as rendu témoignage de moi à Jérusalem, il faut que tu le rendes aussi à Rome. »
And the night after, the Lord came to his side and said, Be of good heart, for as you have been witnessing for me in Jerusalem, so will you be my witness in Rome.
12 Lorsqu'il fit jour, quelques Juifs s'assemblèrent et se lièrent par une malédiction, disant qu'ils ne mangeraient ni ne boiraient jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent tué Paul.
And when it was day, the Jews came together and put themselves under an oath that they would take no food or drink till they had put Paul to death.
13 Il y avait plus de quarante personnes qui avaient formé cette conspiration.
And more than forty of them took this oath.
14 Ils allèrent trouver les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens, et dirent: Nous nous sommes liés par une grande malédiction pour ne rien goûter jusqu'à ce que nous ayons tué Paul.
And they came to the chief priests and the rulers and said, We have taken a great oath to take no food till we have put Paul to death
15 Maintenant donc, vous, avec le conseil, informez le tribun qu'il doit vous l'amener demain, comme si vous alliez juger son cas plus exactement. Nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu'il ne s'approche. »
So now, will you and the Sanhedrin make a request to the military authorities to have him sent down to you, as if you were desiring to go into the business in greater detail; and we, before ever he gets to you, will be waiting to put him to death.
16 Le fils de la sœur de Paul, ayant appris qu'ils étaient aux aguets, entra dans la caserne et en informa Paul.
But Paul's sister's son had word of their design, and he came into the army building and gave news of it to Paul.
17 Paul fit venir un des centurions et dit: « Amenez ce jeune homme au commandant, car il a quelque chose à lui dire. »
And Paul sent for a captain and said, Take this young man to your chief, for he has news for him.
18 Il le prit donc et l'amena au commandant en disant: « Paul, le prisonnier, m'a convoqué et m'a demandé de vous amener ce jeune homme. Il a quelque chose à te dire. »
So he took him to the chief captain and said, Paul, the prisoner, made a request to me to take this young man to you, for he has something to say to you.
19 Le commandant le prit par la main et, s'éloignant, lui demanda en privé: « Qu'as-tu à me dire? »
And the chief took him by the hand and, going on one side, said to him privately, What is it you have to say to me?
20 Il dit: « Les Juifs se sont mis d'accord pour te demander d'amener Paul demain au conseil, comme s'ils avaient l'intention de s'informer un peu plus précisément sur lui.
And he said, The Jews are in agreement together to make a request to you for Paul to be taken, on the day after this, into the Sanhedrin, to be questioned in greater detail.
21 Ne leur cède donc pas, car plus de quarante hommes l'attendent, qui se sont engagés par une malédiction à ne pas manger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué. Maintenant ils sont prêts, attendant la promesse de ta part. »
But do not give way to them, for more than forty of them are waiting for him, having taken an oath not to take food or drink till they have put him to death: and now they are ready, waiting for your order.
22 Le commandant laissa donc partir le jeune homme, en lui recommandant: « Ne dis à personne que tu m'as révélé ces choses. »
So the chief captain let the young man go, saying to him, Do not say to anyone that you have given me word of these things.
23 Il appela deux des centurions, et dit: « Préparez deux cents soldats pour aller jusqu'à Césarée, avec soixante-dix cavaliers et deux cents hommes armés de lances, à la troisième heure de la nuit. »
And he sent for two captains and said, Make ready two hundred men, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen, to go to Caesarea, at the third hour of the night:
24 Il leur demanda de fournir des montures, afin de faire monter Paul sur l'une d'elles et de l'amener sain et sauf à Félix, le gouverneur.
And get beasts so that they may put Paul on them, and take him safely to Felix, the ruler.
25 Il écrivit une lettre ainsi conçue:
And he sent a letter in these words:
26 « Claudius Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix: Salutations.
Claudius Lysias, to the most noble ruler, Felix, peace be with you.
27 Cet homme avait été saisi par les Juifs et allait être tué par eux, lorsque je suis arrivé avec les soldats et que je l'ai secouru, ayant appris qu'il était romain.
This man was taken by the Jews, and was about to be put to death by them, when I came on them with the army and took him out of danger, having knowledge that he was a Roman.
28 Désireux de savoir pourquoi ils l'accusaient, je l'ai fait descendre dans leur conseil.
And, desiring to get at the reason for their attack on him, I took him down to their Sanhedrin:
29 J'ai trouvé qu'on l'accusait sur des questions relatives à leur loi, mais qu'il n'était accusé de rien qui mérite la mort ou la prison.
Then it became clear to me that it was a question of their law, and that nothing was said against him which might be a reason for prison or death.
30 Lorsqu'on m'a dit que les Juifs attendaient cet homme, je te l'ai envoyé immédiatement, en chargeant ses accusateurs de te présenter eux aussi leurs accusations contre lui. Adieu. »
And when news was given to me that a secret design was being made against the man, I sent him straight away to you, giving orders to those who are against him to make their statements before you.
31 Les soldats, exécutant leurs ordres, prirent donc Paul et le conduisirent de nuit à Antipatris.
So the armed men, as they were ordered, took Paul and came by night to Antipatris.
32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers qui devaient l'accompagner et retournèrent à la caserne.
But on the day after, they sent the horsemen on with him, and went back to their place:
33 Lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à Césarée et remirent la lettre au gouverneur, ils lui présentèrent aussi Paul.
And they, when they came to Caesarea, gave the letter to the ruler, and took Paul before him.
34 Après l'avoir lue, le gouverneur demanda de quelle province il était originaire. Ayant compris qu'il était de Cilicie, il dit:
And after reading it, he said, What part of the country do you come from? And, hearing that he was from Cilicia,
35 « Je t'entendrai pleinement quand tes accusateurs seront aussi arrivés. » Il ordonna qu'on le garde dans le palais d'Hérode.
I will give hearing to your cause, he said, when those who are against you have come. And he gave orders for him to be kept in Herod's Praetorium.
